I’ve been spending quite a bit of time in the hotel lobby, with its fiercely lacquered armchairs and cheap plastic chandelier. Staking out a rickety seat in the corner, surfing a weak WiFi signal that must be beaming in from Hamzeh’s Plastic Shoe Emporium, I’m finally laying the groundwork for the months ahead. I’ve booked my flight to Beirut and reserved what is, at six US bucks, bound to be the cheapest bed in the city. I’ve written to Couchsurfers in Syria, slyly alluding to the letter of invitation I might need to make it across the border. I’ve had more than a few dreams about the girls in Tel Aviv. I’ve researched flights to Nairobi and flights to New York from Johannesburg, scribbling notes on a piece of paper that promptly gets lost under ... read more

Off to England today, bags are packed and ready to go. We checked out of the Emirates Towers and caught a cab to the airport at 7.30 am. We decided to leave earlier just in case there was a traffic hold-up, but the traffic was constant and we arrived at the airport within 20 minutes. At the security check prior to reaching the check in area, Paul's bag was searched. They really weren’t looking, I’m sure it was just for show. It was a long walk to the gates and the Duty Free was huge and very busy. We made our way to the British Airways lounge passing lots of Indian contract workers asleep in front of the departure gates….not a good look. These workers are paid an average of $40 AUD per month, and ... read more

... read more

On the Road I am sitting on a bus travelling btween Canakkale and Istanbul and marvelling at the incredibly beautiful scenery, the fast efficient bus service here and the friendly hospitable Turkish people who have really touched our hearts. It has been a great week, a mixture of the really budget backpacker-style life in Istanbul (even a local agreed that we had negotiated a very good price for our accomodation) and a package tour that we organised in Istanbul to take us to Ephesus, Troy and Gallipoli! Bus Travel Our bus is following the coast on the Gallipoli Peninsula, the sun is shining and at 15 degrees it is the warmest day we have had since leaving Australia. We were told that this time last year Canakkale had snow! The local bus service here in Turkey ... read more

Yesterday I spent seven hours on a camel; re-enacting the march of El Lawrence (Peter O'Toole or Ralph Fiennes, I'm not picky :P) across the desert of Wadi Rum in Jordan before taking a lovely Bedouin-ette for my wife (pictures will follow - when I get around to uploading!). I learnt a few important lessons during the march that I think will prove useful for future El Lawrences: 1) Calling 'For Aqaba' at the top of your lungs while sitting atop a camel can be detrimental to your heath; it should not be attempted, no matter how good it looks on film. 2) Too many El Lawrences can spoil even a desert march - so make sure yours doesn't include more than one adament, arabic-learning, Lawrence lover - and defintely not three. (Note: I am not ... read more

I’ve been chatting with a CouchSurfer in Damascus, a young musician and self-described “tree-hugger” who claims that she’s “all about serving Creator.” Sara offers to hook me up with a friend in Amman, a Palestinian who, she suspects, can tell me a thing or two about life in Jordan. We exchange a few friendly emails then chat one night on Yahoo! Messenger. She wants to know if I have any questions about Islam, eager to clear up any misconceptions. I make plans to meet her at a café in Abdoun, which has grown as cozy as my living room sofa in the past week. She agrees and then adds before signing off, “btw, i’m 17” - the sort of line that makes you wonder just what sort of dirty-old-man vibes you’ve been giving off in ... read more

Well after another lovely business class flight (this time on Emirates) we have finally arrived in Dubai! Our first impressions were a little weird. It was actually the coolest place that we have been over the last week. As in the lowest temperature. And this is meant to be Dubai! The insanely hot place. We arrived at approx 2pm and were taken to the little hell hole that was to be our home for the next 3 weeks. The Golden Sands No 5. Jeremy's idea of heaven. Our 'suite' was approx the size of the lounge in my house and that managed to contain the lounge, dining table, kitchen, bathroom and kitchen. The kitchen was the tiniest thing I have ever seen (and was also the laundry). It was smaller than one in a caravan. On ... read more

Young woman share your fire with me, My heart is cold, my soul is free, I am a stranger in your land, A wandering man, call me sand. Lee Hazlewood, 1966 Do you see what I did there? In the style of high brow writers such as Ian Rankin and Stephen King I have put an excerpt from a song pertinent to the context of the following passage. And I've used a line from a song as the title, further adding to the cultural referencing and pretentiousness. It could be a competition to see who knows from what song the title comes from, or from which album, but all you'd have to do is cut'n'paste it into Google and it would tell you straight away, like so much today, technology has cheapened so many aspects ... read more
