Petra had always been a place in the back of our minds for many years. A famous old city in the Middle East, carved out into rocks. Cool to see one day, but nothing that would really get out of our way for… So getting there, without too many expectations, that place was really impressive! Built by the crafty Nabataeans 400 years before Christ, it’s referred to Sela in the bible and today most known from Indiana Jones III. The entrance to the city begins with walking in to a narrow canyon within huge rocks. In the old days there were big statues and arches along the whole way which is over 1.5km long, with aqueducts on both sides leading water to the city. When we well reached the city, the first sight of it ... read more

For those of you who have been wondering exactly what it is that I am working on over here I have a bit of a surprise for you. This morning I had a meeting out at the Dubailand main HQ and I took along my little old camera phone and managed to get some snaps of some of the models of what Dubailand is going to look like when it is finished as well as a snap of the model of my project - Aqua Dunya. And the biggest surprise that I had when we arrived is the LIVE tigers that they have in the reception area of the office. AND I AM NOT KIDDING. Check out the photos. Apparently these tigers are the cubs of a couple of tigers that are in Dubai Zoo. And ... read more

Have you ever been to the UN building's Hall of Nations in New York? I've fortunately had the opportunity to visit it for free since i'm a penniless college kid in Manhattan improving ramen recipes. But anyway, if you have gone there you may have noticed the plaque marked with the following lovely passage: بنى آدم اعضاء يك پیکرند، که در آفرينش ز يك گوهرند چو عضوى به درد آورد روزگار، دگر عضوها را نماند قرار تو که از محنت دیگران بیغمی، نشاید که نامت نهند ادمی "Of one Essence is the human race, Thusly has Creation put the Base; One Limb impacted is sufficient, For all Others to feel the Mace." This is the work of the famous Persian poet, Sa'adi. Iran's produced a number of fantastic writers who're popular amongst both Iranians and ... read more

We spent a wonderful 12 hour overnight bus trip from Olympos to Goreme in Capadoccia. They are a bit posh on the Turkish buses. They actually have a host that comes around and serves coffee, tea, water/cola and cakes. How cool is that?? But we slept most of the way and Kerrie annoyed the bus by coughing, thanks to the bronchitis or whatever it was she had. We arrived very early in the morning and headed to the Shoestring Pension to stay in caves. So far we had slept on the yacht, then tree houses and now in caves!! After a nap we started to see the sights and headed out on a tour with the rest of the gang. Underground cities, big valleys and fairy chimneys galore. We spent the day travelling around the ... read more

Suprise, Sorry we are late for our first entry, we were playing in traffic. Well our journey started last tuesday May 1st, with enough tears to fill drought ravaged (haha ravaged) dams. We flew out at 7:20pm and on our way through customs Matt was kindly asked to step aside to check his rather sexy body for explosives, those of you who placed bets on this should collect now. Luckily the all clear was given and our trip was allowed to proceed. A stop in Singapore airport for about 20 mins after our 7 hour flight was enough to find the best beer garden (so far) in the world with a humidty of around nine million and passing cops with heavily armed machine guns. (Matt was again slightly nervous) Once we got back onto our ... read more

I survived the shave, although it was a bit disturbing. Not just having some guy who can't understand a word of english using a switchblade around your neck. They light a small stick of cotton wool dipped in white spirits and then he lights it and taps it around your ears to burn off the small hairs. Slightly painful and you get that horrible burnt hair smell. Then he uses a piece of cotton to rip out any hair on your nose. I must say İ did come out as smooth as a babies bum and don't think I will need a shave for another month. Last night we went out to what is supposed to be the best bar ın Kusadasi. Thınk Coyote Ugly with turkish guys instead of hot girls doing the co-ordinated dancing. ... read more

Hmmm...it seems that all of a sudden I felt the need to write some more. I've got some pix I can add to. Maybe it's because of not travelling around Turkey for about 3 months. I have needs, you know? Well, what can I say. I feel so normal here all of a sudden. That's why is time for me to go away..where? - I guess that to other place. I need to get on moving. I'm bored and boring. But before my French class starts again...let me write some random thoughts..and what happened here lately..who knows, you might need this info for a future travel..here! Looks like summer settled in: +30 degrees C! I need to get some tan fast.. - they are working on the bridge near the center park...seems a giant green..aaamm...leech. ... read more

Well life continues on nicely. We took a little drive on the weekend and went up to Sharjah and Ajman for a look around. It was pretty interesting in Sharjah. Some of it looks exactly like Dubai, nice and green and all pretty, and other parts are really really rough around the edges. However thinking about it those parts look a lot like some areas around the gold souk etc. Ajman was lovely. It has very pretty beaches and is nowhere as developed. One thing we did notice is that there is a complete absence of road signs in Sharjah pointing towards areas outside of sharjah. I guess if you go there you are meant to know where you are going. I have taken a few photos of the drive into work. There is construction going ... read more

The temperature’s crept past 90 and there’s a blanket of haze smothering Damascus. Summer’s arrived with a wallop. The days are long, weary slogs; in the morning, it feels like I’ve taken twelve rounds of body blows and a few 2x4’s across the back. Around the hotel - its courtyard draped with ivy, the birds twittering in their cages - there are bodies littered in the shade. The Japanese couple sharing my room is putting in 12-hour shifts in bed, and the room’s beginning to smell like feet and stale air. At night they spend a full 20 minutes brushing their teeth - I’ve ticked off the time on the wall clock - but whether this is heat-inspired dementia or a new hygienic craze in Harajuku, I can’t rightfully say. I spend a few afternoons ... read more

Having an awesome time in Turkey The weather is scorching and the beach is lovely. We are in Kusadasi at the moment which is an awesome place. We are staying here for 4 days and doing some day trips from here. We have a great room and the hostel has a pool. The view is also amazing. Will try upload a photo later. Cant believe we have only been in Turkey for 3 days. We have done so much. Started off in İstanbul which is a crazy place. Highlight was the Blue Mosque. Such a peaceful spiritual place. Tourists stick out like a sore thumb here and you constantly get harrassed by shopkeepers trying to get you to buy stuff. From İstanbul we hopped on the Fez Bus and dıd tours of Gallipoli and Troy. Stayed ... read more
