DEAD SEA: In the beginning of my second week of stay in Jordan, I was beginning to feel that my energy is running short, since we were spending the whole day walking under the relentless sun around the country and ruins, while at night we were enjoying the hidden Jordanian nightlife! That is why the Musharbush sisters (Mirna & Dima) decided to spoil me with a daily trip for relaxation and endless sunbathing. Dead sea rests at 410 meters below the sea level and it is one of the most spectacular destinations anyone can visit. It is an ideal resting place where one can relax in the most organized and economical spa of the big hotels, or simply to enjoy splashing around in the dead sea -a truly unforgettable experience as we are talking about ... read more

After our teary goodbyes in England we arrived in Dubai in the early hours of the morning so it wasn't until around 3am that we got to our apartments. We stayed at the Golden sands 3 apartments for 219 pounds for 5 nights. We could not find a fault with the room. We were very hungry when we arrived so decided to splash out and get room service- we had 2 big steak sandwiches and chips for less than 8 quid. Not bad and it went down our belly's a treat as well. Our first full day in Dubai was pretty much wasted because we slept in till the afternoon. When we did get up we did boring stuff such as going to the supermarket and getting food in for our stay as we are ... read more

Yes I ran away and I'm in Turkey. Turkey was a pleasant surprise I was expecting the dirt and grime of Cairo to be in Istanbul but it turned out to be a nice clean place considering 16 million of people live there. The disorganisation of the tour was as expected, we arrived at the first hotel only to be told that this was not the hotel that we were staying at even though all the travel documentation said so. But a tip for those visiting Istanbul in the future, cross the Art Otel off your list of places to stay. It was novel in that you could hear someone breathing in the room next door (something to do with the window that formed a wall in the back of a cupboard ???, oh and the ... read more

Thankfully a couple of weeks ago the time came to leave the joys of the Golden Sands No 5. This being the delightful place that TTI had put us up in whilst we looked for somewhere to stay. The fact that this was only a studio apartment, and that Jeremy was stuck in it almost 24/7 was enough to drive him nearly completly mad (the curtains in the corner of the room were looking a little frayed at the end of the stay, and if there had been carpet available I am sure that he would have been chewing that as well :) We have now found ourselves a delightful little apartment in a place called the Burj Residences which is situated just behind Burj Dubai. We have a view that overlooks the pool and we ... read more

Middle East » Iran » West » Esfahan April 29th 2007

After spending the night in my hotel room packing the gifts and souvenirs I'd bought, the women came by for a visit to reopen them all over them and interrogate me for shopping information. Alas, after they rampaged through everything, I started to repack as I chainsmoked. Our last visit around Esfahan was to the Friday, or 'Jome' Mosque. This, Seyed explained, was a transliteral error by westerners, for its original name is 'Jame' - 'large, everyone's' Mosque. This Mosque happened to be partially damaged from the bombings during the Iran-Iraq War. JAME MOSQUE - Its entrance marked by the presence of hanging chains, signifying it as a sanctuary for all who seek it. Being the largest and oldest of the mosques in Esfahan, it housed numerous interesting architectural features. For instance, its original columns ... read more

The next day was our final day of the trip and we were on the road to Istanbul. We stopped off and I paid up on my lost bet and our driver was very pleased with his new carton of beer. We eventually got into Istanbul, and by chance I had booked us into the Kumuka finishing hostel so we got ourselves settled and relaxed for the evening with a couple of cold ones. It was the night before Hayley's birthday, so we didn't stop at a couple and went out and sampled the Istanbul nightlife, which turned out to be pretty fantastic. It was also a bit sad as it was time for a few goodbyes as a few people were off early the next day. I was a bit worried that the city ... read more

Ok....so I wrote this blog on the 23rd and it's now.....the 29th. But who's counting? :) Oh come on now. Cell phones are killing bees? Bees???. Give me a break. Upon picking up the International Herald Tribune, I came across this ridiculous article. First, people think that talking too much on cell phones are frying their brain cells and it leads to brain cancer. They even made these ridiculous band-aid looking things to attach to your cell phone so that it "blocks" the harmful death rays your cell phone apparently emits. Now that that crazy fad has passed, the newest harmful thing is that we're actually killing nature's bees. They even quoted Albert Einstein (a great Jewish man by the way) when he said that "If bees were to disappear, the human race would follow suit ... read more

Masada & The Dead Sea The work week here in Israel starts on Sunday, but Guy had taken an extra day off to spend time with us. Early wake-ups still not being one of our favourites, so Guy had to drag us out of bed, again hehe... It was a couple of hours drive to Masada, situated at the bottom part of the Dead Sea. The story Masada tells is about fleeing Jews who captured Masada, a stronghold built on a free-standing plateau high above the Dead Sea. Around 1000 people lived here and resisted the Romans. Finally the Romans figured out a way to take over stronghold. By building a big ramp all the way up to the plateau (!). Seeing the end was near, the jews who didn't want to ... read more

A few days after their disappearance this week, the two Sunni youths are found dead on the side of the road near Sidon. There are nervous nights in Beirut. In my hotel lounge, the owner’s watching the news with his nargileh pipe planted between his lips, the smoke piping from the corner of his mouth and a grave look on his flushed features. “Chouf,” he says, gesturing to the screen with his eyebrows. In a village in the Chouf Mountains, men are pouring into the street - not quite outraged, but clearly up to no good. Words are racing across the bottom of the screen in Arabic. For all I know they’re giving weather reports for the weekend - “Sunny and mild in Marjayoun”; “Mostly pleasant in Chtaura” - but on this night they look ... read more
