Dictionaries are a wonderful thing. If anything, when you're highly bored or slightly out of your mind from the pain in your mouth....you take a look and see what's really in that magical book. A quick glance in the "B" section gives me "biological warfare" (לחמה ביולוגית) or "to build air raid shelters" (למקלת) which in reality that last ת should be a ת sofit, but I can't figure out how to do that on my keyboard at the moment. Then comes the distinction of "to get someone pregnant" which is not equal to "to make pregnant" however it all looks the same in Hebrew; להכניס להיריון. Which come to think of it....who the hell says "I come to make you pregnant now." It sounds like some creepy command that a guy makes and the ... read more

The past 15 days In Turkey were more than what I could have asked for. Combining the history learned, the people met, the lessons grasped, and the experiences went through, I will need much more than two weeks to fully digest and appreciate. The past blogs were bombarded with the little history and social situation that I came across. This time I will attempt to highlight some quintessential Turkish experiences that every traveller should go through. Melevani Dervish It's much more than the mesmerizing twirling. Combining the rhythmic music, which is mainly drums and flute, with the rituals each Dervish goes through before, during, and after the prayer, it is a spiritual experience to say the least, even if you are not religious.

We finally went out and celebrated Jeremy getting a job on Thursday night. It has only taken us 3 weeks! Therefore a drink at a lovely bar was well overdue. So off we tripped to the emirates towers where we met up with another lovely kiwi couple to celebrate. Rod and Jess are newbies to Dubai as well and we have a couple of lovely drinks on the 51st floor of the Emirates towers over looking Dubai at night. The drinks were not all that cheap but the menu was enormous! We could hardly lift the drinks menu. Jess had a 88 dirham drink (which translates to roughly $40 dollars). In Dubai that is really quite expensive. The car shopping saga continued on the weekend as well. We test drove a hummer, and actually ended up ... read more

Greetings from Istanbul! Turkish keyboards are a little different, and I am not all that big on proofreading, so bear wıth me. I, Janie, not being as adept at this as John just realized that the Traveller's Prayer which I found in Ireland never got posted. So I posted it (I think). Well this is our last day in Istanbul. We spent the first half of the day trying to find our Havaş (HA-wash) (airport shuttle) stop, and the second half of the day trying to find things to do that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Our time here has been very interesting. We saw the sights, ate the kebabs, and spent alot of our time observing. There are several very distinct cultures here. There are the Turks, then there are the tour group ... read more

Middle East » Iran » West » Ahvaz May 27th 2007

Imagine being in a sauna turned up to the max. Despite the marvellous sites to visit in south-western Iran, I was dying to the point that nicotine addiction didnt take effect, and locals (and tourists) were laughing at how beetroot red i'd become due to the scorching heat. I sadly don't tan due to my dad's genes, I just roast like a suckling pig. In the Persian language, '-stan' is translated to 'the place of'. Hence to this day, we have countries and provinces which used to be part of the humongous Persian Empire, ending with such (eg. Kurdistan - 'place of the kurds'...ok, you got me). My second trip to Iran focused on the west, where it seemed that majority of the provinces were called 'something-a-rather-stan'. Touring around national borders was absolutely fantabulous, as ... read more

Shalom! We have spent the last 3 days in Jerusalem. Upon arrival, we drove in and did nothing the first day. The following day, we booked a tour of the Old City and saw the Armenian, Jewish, Muslim, and Christian quarters. We also spent 1.5h at Yad Vashem (not enough time). I had seen most of these sites before but it was a new experience for Josh, but it's always nice to see things again. The next day we went to the Israel Museum - of which the archaeological wing was closed... until 2009... for "comprehensive renovations". We saw the Dead Sea Scrolls though, which was amazing in itself. Later that day we took a scenic drive to a stalagtite/stalagmite cave near Beit Shemesh... which was closed for the day. Notice the theme. Also, I forgot ... read more

I’ve made arrangements to be in Jerusalem by Friday afternoon, but like a Facts of Life reunion, it’s a plan that looks far better on paper once it’s whirred into grim, regrettable motion. On Friday morning, having lazily worked my way through some old emails and a Nescafe, I get to Abdali Station just in time for a taxi driver to look at his watch, shake his head, and explain that the King Hussein Bridge border crossing into Jerusalem closes at noon for the shabat. It’s a perilously stupid start to my Israeli odyssey, one that - if you’ve come to know me by now - is bound to take a few more turns for the moronic before all’s said and done. I check back into the Palace Hotel, with a few light-hearted barbs for ... read more

Middle East » Jordan May 26th 2007

Jerash Having got past Jordanian immigration our first stop was the ruins of Jerash. Again a place we had not heard of but that made it all the more enjoyable. Square Km's of pillar's, colonnaded streets on which you could see where the chariots had rutted the road's centuries before, ampitheatres and much much more. We saw some bagpipe players and it was enough to bring tears to the eyes... it was painful. There were beautiful mosaics on the floors of some of the buildings which unfortunately are exposed to direct sunlight - but like so much of what we have seen so far there is still so much to excavate and it will take decades to complete. To conclude a wonderful surprise in what felt like the middle of nowhere. Amman Back to western ... read more
