Below is an excerpt from this weeks Time Out We all know the problems with Dubai's traffic - speeding hummers flasing their dazzling lights at you, snarling Sheik Zayed traffic jams and a lack of decent commuter options. But a new problem has surfaced, and it's one that's giving the Dubai Traffic Police a bit of a headache. Caught on security footage groups of cars are travelling around Dubai in the early hours of the morning. So far, so ordinary. But it seems that when the vehicles stop at traffic lights, the people in the cars pile out onto the road and start dancing widly to music blasting out of the speakers. As soon as the lights go green, they all scramble back into their vehicles and speed off to the next junction. While some of ... read more

These days in Tel Aviv - a hedonistic Sodom-by-the-sea, if ever there was one - aren’t entirely going according to plan. Somehow I’d imagined myself thrust full-on into the pageantry of pleasure and vice from day one: an orgy of sex, drugs and potato kugel that seemed to ignore my aversion to drugs and my ambivalence toward kugel. While I’d planned long days on the beaches and longer nights in the clubs, it’s only now that I’ve come to terms with the reality of my time in Tel Aviv: I look fat in my swimsuit, I don’t like clubs, and my wallet’s taken such a beating that I’m going to be slouching my way into Africa by month’s end. Never mind the four-dollar iced coffees that have become a five-a-day habit, or the fact that ... read more

SCUBA Saz and the wrongest day ever So they’ve now been in Dubai over a week and knowing that Ficks has his open water diver licence, knowing that they could go diving together as they travel round the world, knowing that she loves a challenge, Saz signs up for an open water course at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Such an amazing idea, such a beautiful location, such a professional bunch of instructors…such a shame she appears unable to blow out through her nose to clear her mask! 5 attempts later and close to hyperventilating she leaves the pool in tears…Ficks as always is amazing and they decide to get some food for dinner in Spinneys (the local supermarket) to calm her nerves, forget about the scuba for a while, relax…..the afternoon can only get better ... read more

Yesterday we were landed in Istanbul at a reasonable hour of 8 am. We took the shuttle bus into town (right near the Grand Bazaar). Dad, sisters, Matt and I walked over to the Blue Mosque. It was supposed to be about 1.5 miles, but it wasn't nearly that far. To go inside you need to remove your shoes and your legs and shoulders must be covered. We also thought that you had to wear a veil, but apparently it wasn't required as most of the women (tourists) were not wearing any head covering. Inside it is very simple. Just basically one big room with some lovely ceiling designs. Much more simple than all of the fancy churches we have seen. The skyline of Turkey is doted by mosques. We attempted to go to the ... read more

Iranians and their hospitality shall never let you leave the country without gaining extra kilos/pounds. Locals lure the weird-looking tourists with treats such as spaghetti 'n' ice cream, iced melon, juicy kebabs and fresh bread in exchange for posing with them in photos. Such generous offers become brutal to your expanding waistline as the 22nd street vendor offers their sexy merchandise. Mmmm....that's a hot chicken sandwich you got there, mate. Three photos with you, your pal Mohammed, and your cousin Ali Reza? All right, deal. In the city of Urumieh, mosques and Armenian churches are located close to one another by the bazaar. 'What, churches in Iran? WTF?' you may think - indeed, there's even a famous church built over the tomb of one of the three wise men here. In fact it is said ... read more
