Today we got the car!!! Yos drove us to Netanya around noon and we picked up the car that Ilan had arranged for us. It's a brand new 2007 Nissan Micra, great small car. Once we were on the road, we headed up to the Galil to drive through Nazareth. This was mostly for Josh, but Noah and I had never been there either. Just before arriving in Nazareth we took a wrong turn and ended up in a small Arab village called Iqsal. It didn't take us long to figure out that we were in the wrong place. After a few strange looks, we headed back out to the main road and quickly found our way to Nazareth. Unfortunately, it was Sunday, and almost everything that we wanted to see was closed, but it was ... read more

Dubai First impression is the shopping that reminds me of Malaysia, come in and have a look, no hassle - but you can’t even walk past without hassle. 2nd flight into Dubai wasn’t the best, we lost our liquids with the 100ml in 1L plastic bag thing, then the footrest didn’t go fully down on the right so left leg was an inch or two lower, and didn’t allow tray table to go down. This normally wouldn’t bother me, only the chair was high and my legs were dangling and could feel DVT growing by the second. Anyway, nice meal and watched Music and Lyrics which was great and then Children of Men which was shit to say the least and played Centipede an old Atari game . Got in bit over ½ hour late, ... read more

Vandaag op ... read more

It’s been over 2 years since we made our first transfer through Baghdad International airport. It reminded us of an old movie set that had been filmed many years ago and now was rarely used. After many trips that have filled our passports with Entry & Exit stamps, very little has changed. Small things such as the tiny Duty Free shop opening, electricity being restored and a few more Iraqi civilians spotted here and there. Still, very little when you consider it’s been over 4 years since the airport, and most of the country, came to a crashing stop. So after 2 years, 3months and 12 days, we will say good-bye to this place. Good-bye to the long, hot dusty days; the 14 hour work days, 7 days a week. Soon this place will become ... read more

I began the trip expecting major history lessons in Egypt, but not a great deal ın Turkey. My tours on the Aegean coast is correcting my ignorance. In the town of Selcuk (situated directly south of Istanbul), I planned to just visit Ephesus, the best preserved Greek city after Pompeii. Needless to say, I was overwhelmed by the stunning architecture and city planning at Ephesus. However, I had no idea other important history lessons are in store for me. Randomly walking around town after taking a grueling 10 hour over night bus ride from İstanbul, I stumbled upon three ruins near the outskirts of town. I came across a lone pillar ın the fields, which turns out to be the only remain of Temple of Artemis, one of the 7 wonders of the world. It ... read more

Today was a slightly boring day for me - I have been to both of these places previously, but neither Josh nor Noah had been, so we visited them. We still had trouble getting the car so Ori took us and his kids on a day trip. I was still sick at this point so no time was really wasted. HAPPY BIRTHDAY AVIVA!!!... read more

EASTERN EXPRESS Train from Kars A Turkish seater (pullman) wagon, nearly full. The train is coming from Kars on the eastern border, traveling 1950km to get to Istanbul in 36 hours. Most passengers at this point have gotten on much later, after Ankara, and are dressed in "secular" "modern" dress: sports shirts and jeans on men; most women uncovered and also wearing jeans. It's early afternoon and most passengers are dozing or chatting in small groups. Somewhere towards the middle, Adam - a middle aged local-looking man - is re-reading a book he finished minutes ago. He has been on the train since its departure from Kars, and the seat has grown increasingly uncomfortable in the past 30 hours. He occasionally looks up to pay attention to conversations that go into politics or religion. Short hair, ... read more

Shalom, Sorry for the delay in getting out an update on our travels. Since were in Israel you may have suspected we had been shot or kidnapped, but no such luck. Since Tuesday morning we have visited the shopping district and Diaspora Museum in Tel Aviv. Been to Masada (cable car to King Herods mountain top palace/fortress in about mid 30's heat) and Ein Gedi (thermal spa), plus of course swam in the Dead Sea and I did manage to float. And of course Jerusalem. Sianne got interrogated at passport control, which was quite funny and I walked straight though. Don't really think much of Tel Aviv. It is the more modern city and has lots of these ugly 60's 3 or 4 storey apartment building that are in need of repair or demolition. Apparently they ... read more

In the two weeks since I left Damascus, preparations have hit full-stride for the upcoming referendum. It should prove to be a real nail-biter, with as many as .8% of Syrians expected to cast their nay votes, and President Assad riding the maniacal wave of popular support toward another seven years in office. As Sara explains, voters have two choices: “’Yes,’ I want Bashar to stay in power. ‘No,’ there is no one but Bashar.” Already the place has the air of a victory parade, with flags and banners strung from the street lights and Assad’s smiling mug plastered on every billboard. “You’d be smiling, too,” his face suggests. “The people love me. “Or else.” There’s Bashar beaming from an overpass and Bashar draped across five floors of a government ministry, his trim little moustache ... read more

well i'm still in israel so i'm not really sure what i should write about so i'll try to include some background about me and my trip, and some updates about what's going on recently. first, a more detailed itinerary of my trip: 13/06/07 - arriving to camp kutz, a summer camp of the jewish reform movement (a teen leadership camp), in warwick, NY. i'm gonna stay there until 13/08/07, being a security guard (i'll have a little time off during that time so i'll probably be a little in NYC too). then, my plans were to be in the NYC-boston area for about a month and then to tour the east coast until florida, but then my parents decided that they're gonna join me for about 3 weeks during this time, and since they don't ... read more
