Sunday 24 June, 2012 Milan to Hobart, via Abu Dhabi, UAE I was able to sleep in as I didn’t need to leave for the airport until 10.30 am, so a relaxed breakfast without rushing. It was good. Then full on again once at the airport – luggage drop – security checks – waiting for flights – and waiting some more. It was a good, easy 9-hour flight though, and not too cramped, I had two seats to myself, so I wasn’t forced to make conversation with anyone which I thought was a bonus and prayed the next sector from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne would be just as good! Once in Abu Dhabi though things changed. The connecting flight was late, so instead of waiting 2 ½ hours the wait dragged out ... read more

Well, here I sit looking out the window at Abu Dhabi airport. Looks just the same as Sydney or Melbourne... could be anywhere really. Looking out the window of the plane coming down though it was unmistakable that is wasn't just anywhere. Sand, sand and more sand. Oh and did I mention that there was a lot of sand. I decided not to do a stopover here; too anxious to get to Italy! Flight from Hobart was fast... flight from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi was slow! Seriously though, not too bad for a 14-hour flight. I think I slept for about three hours. Pretty good considering how cramped it was. The flight was absolutely full... not a spare seat to be had. I flew Etihad, the national carrier of the UAE. Food was pretty good, everything ... read more

There seems to be a school of thought about stopping over on route from the uk to Australia/NZ. Some people reckon your should do what you always used to do before kids (in our case, this was to nail it as soon as possible). Others swear by it. Well i say, what's not to love so far? We have had excellent service in all the airports; fast-tracked in every queue; lovely flight attendants; easy transfers; and the most luxurious hotel I have ever stayed in. Weather is hot and sunny and the beds are bloomin' comfy. For 50 quid we upgraded our room to business class, which gives us unlimited food and drink in the business class suite. Breakfast and an amazing view from our hotel room. By golly I even have scales in our bathroom ... read more

Happy Weekend! Hope you have some fun stuff planned for yourself! I had a great day (weekend here). I attended the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship and had the opportunity to watch both Rory McIlroy AND Tiger Woods in the same threesome. What are the odds of that? How lucky was I? We started off at 7:40 a.m. thinking we were gonna see Tiger, Rory and Luke tee off (so read the schedule online), but we get to the course only to find that they didn't tee-off until noon. Funny thing is Sergio Garcia, Martin Kaymer, and Lee Westwood were set to tee off at 7:50 a.m. so we decided to follow them for the first nine instead. Terri and I followed Sergio last year in Dubai, so that was a weird coincidence. Okay, I'll admit ... read more

Day 2 at the Zayed Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi and England are at least putting up more of a fight, however, disappointingly a couple of late wickets fell near to the end of the day - hopefully we will make it to day 4 this time, we met an ex England cricket captain in the lift this morning before play started and he predicted he would be at the golf on Sunday as the second test will be over!! I understand Rory McIlroy is leading after day 1 but have not heard this officially. Today a couple of golfers, not big names, came to watch the final couple of hours at the cricket, when they had finished their rounds, they sat near the Barmy Army and were immediately recruited!!!! The cricket stadium is again in the ... read more

We moved to Abu Dhabi yesterday for the start of the second test, which starts on Wednesday. Our final two days in Dubai were disappointing because the weather was not at all good! It reminded us of cold, windy, cloudy days on holiday in Devon when the kids were young! Even included was some Devon fog, we couldn't see the Atlantis Hotel which was a view from our hotel balcony! A couple of English people in the hotel lift were Packed ready for theirflight home and were moaning about not having a tan!!! The coach trip to our hotel right next to the Abu Dhabi Mall took an hour and 20 minutes, an easy run with areas of 'forest' along the side of the motorway, apparently the government are planting forests to make the area look better, ... read more

Hello, Yes, it has been awhile since I have added another entry. Since my adventures are fewer and farther between, I thought I would add a few photos from the past couple of months here in Abu Dhabi. We have been allotted a three-week break here for the holidays, which is even longer than the teachers back home. One of the wonderful perks of teaching! I will be flying back to Canada from Dec. 17th-Jan.5th, and I am looking forward to adding another BLOG entry when I return from my holiday. I have rented a condo at a ski resort near Barrie, to spend Christmas and New Years with my family. So there should be some great pictures to share with you once I have returned. Also in March, we have been allotted yet another two-week ... read more

Hi, I am going to restart this blog with photos of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, where we visited on the weekend. It is so stunning, majestic and peaceful, I thought it would be a nice introduction back to the UAE. It was a long weekend in the UAE, for Islamic New Year, coinciding with the UAE National Day 40th yr celebrations, so it was a great chance to visit Abu Dhabi for 3 days...more to come on that later. To briefly fill you in, I started this blog several years ago when we were living in Abu Dhabi. After returning to Australia for a year or so, we have now just recently relocated back to the UAE, although this time we are living in Dubai. I will recap in the following blog entries, ... read more

So after a lot of sad goodbyes, myself and Vinny headed off on our travels First stop... Abu Dhabi! We arrived at 7am to 30 degree weather and a lot of taxi touts! Ended up throwing our bags and then ourselves into a moving taxi that was pulling up illegally and so paid a little bit less to get to our hotel than a standard taxi!! We are backpackers now so every penny counts! We checked into five star luxury hotel the Sheraton (I know I know we are supposed to be backpacking but got a really good deal through a friend!) for some R n R and it was savage! After massive breakfast, we headed to the pool where we slept for hours under a palm tree! Dinner in the hotel and an early night. ... read more

So the Etihad flight was pretty good actually, overnight from London. There was the usual o no when you realise your sat behind two kids! Surely the airlines should have a seperate area for family which gives them more space and it sound proofed!! When we landed at 7am it was 22oC! So onto the nice free Etihad coach to Dubai now!... read more
