My journey/adventure in the UAE - 2010-2013

Salam (Hello)! The time has come for me to post my final BLOG from my 2010-2013 journey in the UAE. I must admit that the ending will be bittersweet in memory for me. I guess I will begin by saying that it has been by far, the most experiential and enriching journey of my life thus far. My journey in the Middle East has blessed me with the privilege of meeting some very wonderful, BIG and LITTLE, people first and foremost. I have worked alongside many interesting, intelligent, fun people from many different countries, some of which have become and will remain, lifelong friends; I’ve had the opportunity to hone my skills as a teacher both through experience and professional development respectively; I’ve taught some awesome children (and some not so awesome, but equally as lovable) ... read more

Well, things are definitely winding down here in the 'sandbox'. Heading down the 'home stretch', metaphorically speaking. I have been working diligently this past spring break, preparing my online portfolio for teaching jobs back home and I have been sending it to prospective schools (of course very few boards allow this, so I have had to hone my Sherlock Holmes skills to find principals' emails). I am happy to report that most of the few responses I have received, have been somewhat promising. I learned of a new patron saint for employment named St. Cajetan (odd name I know), and I have been as equally diligent in the prayer department :-) Otherwise, I didn't do too much this break. Just a couple of beach days, a couple of ladies nights, an afternoon wine and cheese, and ... read more

Top of the mornin', afternoon. or evenin' to ya! Since I will be leaving the Middle East permanently this coming June, I thought I would be sure and add at least a few more BLOG entries before I complete it altogether. This entry is from yet another FUN St. Patrick;s Day celebration with my teaching buddies. We went to an "All you can eat/drink brunch" at an Irish Bar located in the Royal Meridien Hotel in Abu Dhabi, called P.J. O'Reilly's. Needless to say, it was an awesome day of eating, drinking, and dancing to a cool Irish band. It was pretty awesome to be spending St. Patrick's Day by 'the pool'. Although I missed my gf's back home and spending the day at Kennedy's in St Agatha :-( Next year girls!!!! Well, I hope you ... read more

Hi there, Just thought I would put a BLOG entry together from my trip to the Emirates Park Zoo with both of my classes (plus another grade three class). It is fun to get outside the classroom with the boys every now and then and to share some one-on-one time and get to know them, and them me, in a different environment. Well, simply enjoy the video and look forward to a few more, as I complete my final year of adventure teaching here in the U.A.E. Al Salam :-) **CLICK 'READ MORE' TO VIEW VIDEO!! (P.S. I must get out of the habit of sayng 'fart' in front of children before I get back to Canada....doesn't receive the same reaction here.....LOL) ... read more

Well, another Christmas come and gone way too fast! I was home for three weeks beginning on the 11th of December until New Years Eve (the 31st). It was wonderful to spend time with my children (although Ashley left on the 13th to head to Saskatchewan to spend Christmas with her beau Justin and his family. So we saw each other for a day before she left and then again when she returned on the 30th). It was also great to be able to attend Coopers school Christmas concert (so cute, even though he was planted in the back and he had to perform the "Peppermint Twist" alone, minus a female partner). I was also fortunate to be able to spend a few days with my Mom (who will be 85 in 2013) at my new ... read more

Well another summer vacation has come to an end...and the saddest one yet! I hated leaving this year because I purchased a new home for myself and cannot stay to enjoy it as of yet. My plan is to complete my third year here teaching in the UAE and then to return next summer to my new home for good! Summer 2012 was wonderful! I saw most of my closest friends (except for Cass and Dianne...Christmas potluck ladies for sure), made a couple of wonderful new friends (Alvin, my realtor/friend and Cathy, my new Kawartha Lakes BFF), went sailing for the first time (thanks Amy...you are lovely also). Spent some time with my Mom...although not enough and she still needs to see my new home (you're gonna love the sunroom Momma), saw my Godfather and Sandra ... read more

Well, another school year has come to an end, along with the final year of my 2-year teaching contract here in the Middle East! WOW...time flies when you love your job. Seriously, nothing other than becoming a mother, and having Cooper come into my life (not gonna say becoming a 'grandmother' no matter what....lol), has ever made me feel as fulfilled or happy in my entire life. Therefore, I have decided to return for one final year, on a 1-year contract renewal. Staying at the same school, but I am 'looping' with my classes and moving up to Grade 3 with the boys. I will be returning to Canada for summer vacation on July 11th and plan to 'bring to life" one of the three goals I came here to achieve. Then my final two goals, ... read more

Europe » Spain » Catalonia » Barcelona » La Rambla April 5th 2012

'Ola', from our ‘Final Destination’..... Barcelona! We arrived safely after our ‘cruise’ across the Mediterranean from Italy to Barcelona. We docked at about 6:30 p.m. and found out we could actually walk from the port to our hotel, which was a BONUS! For those of you that are familiar with Barcelona, we stayed at the Euro Rambla, which is situated right ‘smack’ in the middle of La Rambla. La Rambla is the party/shopping/restaurant, happening place in Barcelona. The hotel was a great choice. The weather was a bit damp and cloudy. First real threat of rain we had in 13 days (other than a few sprinkles our 2nd day in Berlin), so I guess we were pretty lucky with the weather on this journey. Overview: Since it was early evening, once we got settled into our ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Civitavecchia April 4th 2012

Surprise!! I decided to make an additional BLOG entry from the cruise ship, since the only ferry I have been on was going to the Toronto Island. Plus, it was like a little town in itself, since the trip took 22 hours. Overview: We decided to take a cruise ship (named Grimaldi), from Rome to Barcelona. This required us to take the train from Rome to Civitavecchia (1 hr, 20 min.), where the port is located. We got to Civitavecchia and were pleasantly in awe of the little port town and the overwhelming view of the Mediterranean....simply breathtaking. We arrived at the ship 2 hours early for check-in hoping that we could drop-off our luggage and tour around Civitavecchia a bit. NOT!! They had nowhere for us to securely leave our luggage, so we had no ... read more

Bonjourno from Rome! We are currently in Day 11 of our European journey. We never realized that the ferry/cruise boat, doesn't make any trips on Sunday, so we got stuck in Rome for another night....awww shucks! Overview: We arrived Friday afternoon, to a beautiful day and saw a lot in the afternoon. So much so, that we didn't have to take any tours on Saturday. There were only a couple places left that we wanted to see. Just being in Rome is a sight in itself. It is so beautiful! On Saturday Terri wanted to take the train to see Pompei, a small city/region in Italy to see the ruins. Me on the other hand, was not interested so I remained in Rome to do my own thing. My 'own thing' consisted of renting a bike ... read more
