I'm only occasionally not clicking "quiet publish" so I don't clog all your inboxes. But I have written A LOT since I sent out a publish notification so if you have missed the past couple weeks of entries and wish to read you can click on previous entries. I arrived in Turkey a few days ago, and have been getting settled. This week I start to work out what I'll be doing here this summer with the special needs population. It is nice to be out of Uzbekistan, and I have really enjoyed re aquainting myself with Antalya! I had forgotten, or now have a new appreciation for the beauty of this place! It is truly beautiful when speaking of the shoreline, the sea and the mountains! It has also changed quite a bit in 3 ... read more

The now familiar bus trip to Antalya from Iskederun was 14 hours long. Along the way, I contacted a hotel that was located within Antalya's old walled city, based on a recommendation from our Lonely Planet guide book. The owner of the Frankfurt Hotel spoke very good English and even agreed to let us check in upon our arrival in Antalya. The bus finally pulled into the Otogar at 8:30. As we got off to collect our luggage, the sun was shining brightly and stung our eyes, the way it does when you've been at work all night and are heading home on a sunny summer morning. There was a taxi stand nearby and one of the drivers helped us load our bags into his yellow cab. When I pointed at the hotel in the guide ... read more

After three days in Istanbul we knew we were going to like Turkey. We booked a 4 day voyage on a gület.. the small wooden yachts that domınate the southern Turkish coast. The Turkish transportation system is amazing, big comfortable buses take you to all corners of the country...and there are literally hundreds of companies to choose from. We asked about the government owned trains and we kept getting the same answer: "never on time and not safe!". We took an over-night bus from Istanbul to Finicke, which is on the southern coast. The 15 hour bus ride may seem long, but the seats are comfortable, stops every three to four hours for WC and some Turkish Delight, and we found it a great way to get around. We arrived and, after a little hassel over ... read more

5/21/08 7:40 came really early this morning only to get on a bus for 5 hours. Kitalah is the town where we stopped to stay the night on our way to Antalyia. Lets just say that the hotel we stayed in reminded me of a 1 star hotel that one might find in Mexico. Each wall was painted a bright color, we had 3 single beds pushed together on a king-size headboard, and the bathroom floors were DIRTY. Did I mention that there was NO AIRCONDITIONING!!! The weather is cool at night, but I was looking forward to sleeping in a hotel with air-conditioning. SO after another not so fine Turkish buffet full of cheese, meatballs, cucumber and tomatoes all I wanted was a hot shower. On the wall in the shower there was a sign ... read more

Hello Everyone. Thanks for all your comments, ıt ıs really nıce to have messages when I log on. So yesterday was a busy day. I left Selçuk at 9am and went to Pamakkale and checked out the calcıum deposıts that have developed from the calcıum oxıde-rıch water flowıng over the rocks for centurıes. It was really amazıng although I hear that ıt ıs not as spectacular as ıt was about 10 years ago or so because the water has slowed. There was also some more ruıns there. Then I got on a bus when headed for Antalya, whıch ıs on the Medıterranean coast. I arrıved there and then got a bus to Olympos, where I spent the nıght ın a treehouse. there was lots of nıce people here and we sat around a campfıre and had ... read more

Vanaf ... read more

Greetings all. Hope all is well since our last blog. We've been enjoying the sights of Istanbul. We been able to visit the Blue Mosque, The Topkapi Palace, St. Sofia's catherdal and the Grand Bazaar. This we did with our tour group on the last day. Since then we've been staying with Emma, a friend I used to work with. We've been delayed a little due to the damage down to Stephen's bag. They've agreed to pay us 100 Euro, and we've found somewhere here to mend the bag. We've seen a few more sights, but basically trying to get this backpack fixed. Another day we all spent a lovely afternoon in the park, where I learnt how to play backgammon from three players, let just say it was difficult enough then add three people "trying" ... read more

We left Frankfurt Airport shortly after 19:00, right on schedule. Hearing all the announcements on the plane in German and Turkish confirmed that we were indeed headed for an adventure of a lifetime. Up to that point, the whole departure for Turkey had seemed surreal in the hustle and bustle of one of the world's busiest airports. The plane was not full and we were given a 3 seat row all to ourselves. We saw the lights of Antalya right around 11:00 PM and landed at 10 after. The first people encountered were the Visa sales agents. They did not speak English or German, and I was unable to tell them that we actually wanted multiple entry Visas - as we would be exiting Turkey and re-entering. We settled for the single entry one and will ... read more

While in Antalya, we spent a few days at Konyaalti Beach and then five days in Kaleici. Konyaalti is sort of like Miami Beach whereas Kaleici is a Turkish Villiage dating back to 150 BC. In Konyaalti, we stayed at the Hillside Su, which felt like a movie set from a Nip-Tuck episode. Everything at the Hillside Su is colored in white and the food is very good. But while in Turkey, we decided to do as the Turkish do. So after two days we moved to a gorgeous old mansion in Kaleici that had been converted into a hotel called the Marina Residence. There were several great other properties in Kaleici such as Dugan Hotel and Aspen Hotel which would have suited us just as well, but we got a better price at the Marina ... read more
