Samir's article. As you sit there, your eyes glued to the screen, your fıngers frozen to the keyboard, as a chill runs down your spine, and your hair stands on end, these questions may run through your head: Where's Samir? What does perposterous mean? Who is Archibald? All these questions, inquiries and global annoyances will be answered -- in due time........ Anyway, normal Samir here. Just wanted to add that lately I've been bored with writing entries, so I have hired a fellow explorer to do them for me. His name is Archibald. (please don't laugh) Archibald's entry, 7/9/07 A few days ago I took a bus to Alanya, which has a lovely beach on the Mediterranian overun with 5 star hotels. (I am quite certain they are plotting for world domination, but haven't gathered ... read more

Saklikent Gorge and on to the Beach Well, the “Tree Houses” was a bust. Some of our group went “Canyoning,” billed as a cool hike up a canyon, with swimming and the opportunity to be cooler in this 110 F. degree weather, it turned out to be a fairly short hike. I planned to go sea kayaking, but the projected heat wave discouraged anyone else from signing up, so it was first delayed from 10 am to 4 pm, then canceled. There was also the opportunity for a hike to the top of Mt. Olympos to see the natural flames which have been burning “since eternity”, but again the expected heat and the prospect of a 2400 foot climb in the heat discouraged anyone from going. This hard to reach canyon is filled with small ... read more

Let's see. I'll have to work backwards a bit. We swam in the Mediterranean today! Went to a beautiful park today surroundıng a waterfall where we ate lunch at a fısh farm. It was a nice cool spot whıch was a relief from the 110+ heat today. All the Turks are talkıng about global warmıng. Our host left us here to fend for ourselves wıth a couple of phone numbers for guıdes who speak terrıble Englısh. It started a bıt hectıc, but now we seem to have the hang of ıt. Tomorrow we wıll see more Roman ruıns at Aspendos. Then on Saturday, we wıll be tourıng the coast by boat. ... read more

Here we are in Olympos, on the Turkish coast with a pebble beach (costs $2.00 to go to the beach), but not much is happening today because it is forecast to be 50+ degrees. No, that is not Fahrenheit, that is Celsius. Remember, to convert you multiply Celsius times 9/5 then add 32. So 50 x 9/5 +32 equals 122 degrees F. It is 2:30p.m. now and it is only 43 C (109 F), but it is warming up nicely. It is so hot here they won't serve you ice water because they say it causes your body to go into shock. I'm willing to take that chance if they would let me. We are at the Kadirs Tree House camp/motel/bar backpackers rendesvous place; apparently famous, but it burned down last Feb. (electric blanket they ... read more

After a tough few days of paragliding, drinking, eating and enjoying the sights of lovely Fethiye, we boarded our gulet (yacht) and set sail on our 4 day cruise around the coast. On the boat there were 15 people and 3 crew. The crew all Turkish, the guests, all Aussies. Of course it was!!!! After leaving the harbour it was a great start. We lay on the deck and enjoyed the sun, then something started to happen. A little bit of rocking side to side turned into a lot of rolling form side to side and before we new it we were clambering below deck. With shit flying everywhere we sought shelter in a little cove. Only one spewer, and it wasn't Kerrie for a change!!! The rest of that day it rained and we ... read more

We're in a net cafe in the Antalya bus station... partially because we wanted to check our emails to make sure we still have flights home (we do!) and partially because we cant seem to leave the busstation or sit on the grass outside - both resulted in policemen firmly telling us (well communicating to us, as they didnt speak english) that what we were doing was wrong!! Have since figured out that we can leave out a different gate but lost the inclination to do so... Also trying to figure out why they bother metal-detecting us as we come through the doors but then letting us through despite having metal in our bags/on our persons!! Anyway... back to the point - letting you know where we're at and what we're up to right... Boat cruise ... read more

In Romania we say that you can't say you went to Turkey unless you've seen Antalya. The city is huge, situated somewhere in the south of Turkey. I went there with Ann from USA, Ewa from Poland and Mohamed from Tunisia. The trip took 8 hours by bus (during the night)..we didn't sleep at all and the sunrise was amazing... First impression: mountains in the sea and large stones on the beach! Some AIESECers picked us up from the bus station at 7 am and took us to a hotel. We had to wait for the others to arrive from other cities and have breakfast. So we decided to go on the beach. The morning was cool, the water warm and the stones..well...rocky! Hehehehe..but I must admit that the view was amazing! It was the first ... read more

After another day lazing on the beach we decided it was time to go and explore again. We chose Alanya as it was reputed to have a castle and good snorkelling. We jumped on the Dolmus bus outside our hotel and travelled to Manavgat where we needed to change buses to Alanya. We found the correct bus no problem and got on. We were extremely surprised to find that this bus was air-conditioned and quite plush, a big bonus! The ride took us all along the coast line for about 60 kms and lasted about one hour 20 minutes, very good value for 6 lire ( about £2 in our money)! The bay of Alanya was very picturesque, a pretty Port backed by high mountains and a castle overlooking the town. After grabbing a quick coffee ... read more

What would you most hate to do when the forcast is for 10 days continuous rain? Go camping!! That's what we had planned - 2 weeks camping in Cornwall. Sorry people in Cornwall, you have a beautiful county but who wants to sit under canvas watching the rain pour down and tripping across a wet field to answer a call of nature? We were all set to go but on seeing the forcast we searched through the internet, got a late booking to somewhere guaranteed to be hot and sunny. Turkey, well Side, to be exact. (Prounounced Seeday) 24 hours later we were sitting on a plane winging our way to bluer skies. The hotel turned out to be a bit basic but at least it was somewhere to rest your weary head after a hard ... read more
