Hello agaın. Latest and last blog postıng from Turkey for thıs trıp. At the moment I am in Antalya, on my way to getting to Damascus by Saturday. Which means the Turkey portion of my vacation is effectively over. So, to bring things up to date, for most of the last five days I was on a cruise through the southern Mediteranian going from Fethiye to Olympos. The ship we were on had 16 passengers (sort of 18 but I’ll get to that in a sec) and three crew members. Nationalities consisted of one Canadian (myself) one Swede, and the rest Austrailian and American. About nine of the people on the boat was a loose group of backpackers who had all been working together for the summer on the bars of Ios in Greece. For everyone ... read more

Saturday August 19, 2006 - We woke up at 6:30am in order to catch the first bus out of Olympos at 7am, bu tit either didn't come or we missed it. Either way we decided it was a good thing. We then had two hours to go to see the beach and ruins of Olympos (on the way to the beach) and have breakfast before the 9am bus. The ruins were good to see and the beach was pretty, but by that time the sun had come up and it was baking already. So we walked back, explored some more of the ruins, and had our breakfast. The bus filled up quickly and we were on our way. We had to pay for that small bus (which we had avoided doing the first time) and then ... read more

Thursday August 17, 2006 - After a full night on the bus with very minimal sleep, I was pretty cranky upon getting to Antalya, the place where we had to change to a smaller minibus to get to Olympos. Then we had to change to even another smaller minibus to go the last bit of the way. This added another hour and a half or so to the journey. Finally we arrived and got off at the first possible hostel - Kadir's. It is famous for its treehouses, which is where we planned to sleep. It is also furthest from the beach but they have free shuttle service every hour. When we arrived the rooms were full from the night before, as we arrived before check out. They offered us breakfast (breakfast and dinner are both ... read more

We decided to to go away from everyhing and try to put the stress a bit behind us and of course relax and enjoy. We booked an all inclusive deal that took us to an amazing hotel in Kemer in Turkey. We enjoyed the pool, the sun, the beach and lots of food : ) Ariel gained at least 5 kilos (if not more.....) ; ) Now we are back in the center of things for the next 2.5 weeks....... No pictures this time..because Ariel is a fast deleter ; ) Maybe we can add them in a year or so.... read more

That's not to say I am travelling at breakneck speed and that is I appear to be. No. It's that there have been a few days of cycling with not much else. Hence the blur as each day just melds with the next. The scenery along the D-320 has been fairly consistent not changing all that much. I had mountains on either side of me - big, brown, bare mountains with even bigger brown bare mountains behind them which felt like I was riding on the set of some western movie. And I did have a stretch of beautifully tarmaced road which made cycling an absolute dream although that was fairly short lived and it was back to the gravelled hard shoulders before I could really appreciate what it was I had. Hmmm, think there is ... read more

Dad and Cheryl had arrived a few weeks earlier and after spending they're first week looking around London, they did a 14 day European Highlights tour which although was very busy they thoroughly enjoyed. After having a few days rest in London they were off again to Istanbul for a few days while Liani and I headed off to the small fishing village of Kalkan where the four of us were going to spend a week tanning in the sun and swimming in the beautiful mediterranian sea. We were recommended Kalkan as a less touristy option in Turkey and we weren't disappointed. The historic town of Kalkan is an enchanting place and one of the most beautiful locations along Turkey's gorgeous Lycian Coast. With the absence of mass tourism, Kalkan remains a charming and unspoiled haven ... read more

5/30-6/4 We left Cappadocia and headed for another endurance testing 14 hour overnight bus ride. Our final destination was Olympos, a National Park with several miles of gorgeous beaches and lush coastal mountains. The locals are forbidden from building the typical accomodations so several tree hut villages have popped up, encouraging hippie backpackers from all over the world to visit. Andrew and I fit right in with our Wall Street resumes. Our tree hut was secured by a lavish rusted out master lock whıch was really for show because you could easily enter through the gapping holes in the walls and roof (affectionately termed "central ventilation system"). There were local ruins dating back to 300BC to explore, as well as several fun hiking trails offering dramatic views. Unfortunately, I came down with what we can only ... read more

So what the hell is that title about you might be thinking to yourselves... Well in Cappadocia I met two lovely American girls named Dana and Annie who I have been travelling with for the last 2 weeks... But let me start at the beginning... After five days in Cappadocia I decided it was time to leave and head of to Egirdir, via Konya where I stopped briefly to visit the Mevlana Museum (it is the shrine of the founder of the Mevlana order).. In Egirdir I met up with Dana and Annie and we spend a couple of days on different beaches... The first one was not such a success as we had to hire a water cycle to get away of the men undressing the girls with their eyes... And even then we (or ... read more

17th May Arriving in Eğirdir early in the morning I slept in my dorm till just before breakfast and spent the day walking around the tiny picturesque town. As normal it seemed as though there were only men in the town and the women were all in hiding, drawing attention to me. I even had a sleep on my daypack in a park next to the lake I was so relaxed. The lake is completely beautiful, surrounded by rocky and tree covered mountains. When the sun shines the water is a beautiful turquoise blue and I love that even though there are heaps of pensions (hostels), there are not many touristy shops, which is a nice change. I went for another walk at sunset and ate dinner at the pension (eggplant stuffed with veggies) which was ... read more
