Left Istanbul early in the morning on a bus for Canakkale. Turkey doesn't have a very well organized train system, but their buses are superb, and really are the only way to get around. Also, you really get to see the countryside, which is absolutely beautiful by the way: a lot of really green rolling hills, small towns, flowers in bloom everywhere, and randomly an evergreen forest as we went over a small mountain pass (it reminded me of home). Then we had to take a ferry over the Dardanelles to get to Canakkale, where I'll be for the next 3 nights. Canakkale is a beautiful town right on the Dardanelles, and really is one of the last Turkish towns before you hit Greece and the Aegean Sea. I love it because it's absolutely surrounded by ... read more

This was a special day for the Aussies on the trip. We cross The Dardanelles to The Gallipoli Peninsula for a visit to Anzac Cove, the surrounding WW1 battlefields and the war cemeteries. The area was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles during WW1 with the loss of of over 50,000 Brits, Aussies, Kiwis, French and Indians. The Turks lost over 80,000. The invasion by the Allied troops commenced in April 1915 and by the end of the year they were in retreat having failed to make any headway against the Turkish troops in their mission to occupy parts of Turkey and take control of The Dardanelles As we wandered around the war cemeteries there was many a tear in the eyes of the Aussies as the loss of 8709 young men will never be ... read more

During our third visit to Turkey I made it a point to visit the historic city of Troy, which is an ancient and legendary city that is steeped in Greek mythology. It is the home of Homer’s Iliad and the focal point of the Trojan War, which ultimately resulted in the presenting of the Trojan Horse (beware of Greeks bearing gifts) by Odysseus to the Trojans. The original wooden giant still stands in the heart of Troy and is visited by thousands of tourists each year. Troy is a hop, skip and a jump away from the city of Canakkale where the replica Trojan Horse (from the movie Troy with Brad Pitt) stands in the harbor to greet you. After filming was complete, Hollywood donated the replica horse to this beautiful sea-side town. Being the shutterbug ... read more

Today was another long day on the bus, 7 hours driving in total. Thankfully there are only 14 of us on a 44 seat bus, so everywhere has plenty of space to stretch out. We started off with a 3 hour drive out of Kuşadasi to Pergamon, an ancient Roman hospital complex. It is still an eerie feeling to be standing and walking on stones that were in common use over 2000 years ago. There were columns galore, another old theatre, and part of the hospital building wad still standing. Another lunch at another local restaurant. After lunch, we had a 4 hour drive to Troy in the Çanakkale region. Troy was first settled in 3000BC, and there has been 6 different cities on the same site. It was the 6th Troy that the Greeks attacked ... read more

Çanakkale was great. It is a town on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles. There is a lovely seafront walk where you can stop for a meal, beer and/or coffee. This is a great communal area and you can see the Trojan horse which appeared in the Brad Pitt movie. There was a soccer riot near our hotel, with tear gas and everything. It was great to be 3 stories up and just observe. The morning after there were bloodstains on the ground in the town square and some more on the roundabout down the street. It was the final of the Turkish Championship, all I know is the red and yellow guys won and the yellow and black guys were seriously peeved about it. Our tour guide was happy as her team was the ... read more

We had been hoping to do a day trip to Pergamum today but as the peak season is over and there was no-one else wanting to do it it wasn't possible, so we settled for bookıng a bus straight to Çanakkale (vıa İzmır). We packed up (one at a time in our tiny room), ate another good breakfast and then made the short walk to the bus station, where the bus company man was waiting for us with our ticket. The first part of the journey was in a small bus that took us to İzmir to meet up wıth the main bus. Fellow travellers included an Aussie couple who've been living overseas (Hong Kong and then US) for many years and their 12 year old daughter. They are doing a bit of travellıng before relocatıng ... read more

We packed up, had breakfast, checked out of the Hitit Hotel, and were in the mini bus ready to go at 8 am this morning. We set out on our long drive to Canakkale, making numerous stops along the way. Our first stop was in Izmir, at Nihat's house, so he could switch suitcases. While we were in Izmir waiting for Nihat Susan and I popped into a small shop that had all kinds of natural pharmaceuticals, but the women there didn't speak any English and we don't speak any Turkish, so we were unable to sufficiently communicate to enable Susan to buy what she was looking for. They sure had a lot of interesting things though, and it was too bad we couldn't make ourselves understood. The women were very sweet in trying to understand ... read more

Çanakkale We arrived at Istanbul Airport at around midday and made our way through maze of shops until we found the stall that provided bus trips to Çanakkale. We paid around €20 each for tickets and caught the next bus at 2:30 to our destination. The trip was pretty long and far from enjoyable but when we arrived at nearly 8:30 that night, we were just relieved to be off the bus. We got our bags and headed into the town square and found our hotel very easily. We checked in and were immediately upgraded to the brand new hotel around the corner. This was great as we had a pretty shitty day and this was making it much better. We went to our new hotel and got settled before heading down the road for dinner ... read more

Day 8: Today we woke up rediculously early, the alarm went off at 515am. It is a good thing too because our little tour guide arrived half an hour early. Five and a half hours later we arrived at our destination. It took us a minute to realize that we had travelled all the way down the Turkish penninsula to where the Darnadelle straight and the Agean sea meet. We then caught a ferry and headed over to Asia minor to visit Troy. There are a few different versions of the legend of the Trojan horse. One of the more popular ones being that the Trojans kidnapped Helena and the Greeks began a campaign against Troy in an effort to get her back. After perilous years of fighting with no success in breaching the Trojan defences ... read more

We got up at 5 am after I had finished packing at 2 am, so I was exhausted when I awoke, plus the fact that I did not want to have my time in Istanbul with my Dad end. We had THE best time seeing the sights and hanging out with the Turkish people, it was everything I hoped it would be. But all good things must come to an end, and I was in a whole mix of emotions that morning since I was very sad that my time with Dad was over, happy that it happened, and a mix of excited and nervous for the next part of my trip. We met up with the group and waited for the tour bus, the night before we had seen a tour that was just arriving ... read more
