We woke up a little late today. I was intending to go running this morning, but either my alarm didn't go off or I pretended in half-sleep that it hadn't gone off. Went grocery shopping with the German road bikers that were sharing our room, then headed up to Glen Coe to hike Hidden Valley. This was the 1st time that I had gotten to hike in the Glen, so I was really excited! Though it rained most of the hike, it was never too heavy. Fine Scottish weather. The pictures probably tell the story better than I could. The hike only took a few hours, then we drove up to Glenfinnan. This is the site where Bonnie Prince Charles called the Highlanders to rise up against the English in the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. People ... read more

Today was awesome. We were the quintessential tourists. We started the day by driving to Stirling and visiting its castle. While in Stirling we stopped by The Church of the Holy Rude, then the old jail, and walked the town centre. After that we went up to Alva, Scotland. This is the village that was this year’s first teaching match that didn’t work out. It was a beautiful town bordering the Ochil (Oak-Hill) Mountains. Camille bagged her second peak, albeit sleeping. I will undoubtedly return there, as the hill walking was to die for, as the pictures will show. I also must return to golf the Alva Golf Club. The course bordered these stunning hills. After that we went to the William Wallace Monument. Following that we had dinner in a quaint Italian Café. All in ... read more

I took the bus to Stirling today - it’s only an hour from Edinburgh and £7/return, so the perfect day trip. I took one of those “Hop on, Hop Off” tours so I got a pretty good overview of the town. Saw Bannockburn, which is famous for the Battle of Bannockburn, where the Scots under King Robert the Bruce defeated the English in 1314. This battle was the climax to their Wars of Independence, which united the Scots under Bruce and led to independence from England. A few miles away, and a few years earlier, the Scots under William Wallace (Braveheart) fought against the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297. I went to Stirling Castle, which is supposed to be ‘arguably the best in Scotland.’ I wasn’t sure I wanted to see it, ... read more

Your mother was a hampster, and your father smelled of elderberries! Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Stirling By JLECRAGSJuly 1st 2007 "Is there anyone else up there I can talk to?" "No. Now go away or I may taunt you a second time!" Yes, we visited Duone Castle, the setting for Monty Python and Holy Grail. It was better than all the other places we've gone, in my opinion, because they let you go and walk around by yourself without a guide or even an audio tape. The castle, before the day of Monty Python, was used as a hunting lodge for kings and queens. After that we were basically dying of starvation so ... read more

Vacation in Central Scotland, May 12 to 27, 2007 Introduction: I had hoped to start the travel blog while on the trip, but that idea proved to be overly ambitious. We signed up at the library in Stirling, Scotland, to use the computers there, but were limited to one-hour sessions and couldn’t download or print anything. So I’m back at home, trying to put together photos and journals in some sort of order. We visited England and Scotland for the first time three years ago. We rented (or “hired” as they say in the UK) a car and drove around England and up to Scotland, then parked the car when we got to Glasgow and took buses and trains until we left for the airport. We found driving in the UK very nerve wracking, especially with ... read more

Had a great time in Scotland. David's Mum and Dad (Catherine and Bill) came to visit us in Switzerland and then we all headed up to Scotland for Easter. Catherine was a real trooper and although I know she was in alot of pain sometimes, she made the trip there and back to Zurich and took it all in her stride. Dave, myself and Angus stayed with Dave's Cousin Linda & John and their daughter Kelly. They are really lovely people and made us feel right at home. Linda waited on us hand and foot! And John became Angus "punching bag"....(thanks John!). Dave only stayed in Stirling for 4 days but we managed to go to Stirling Castle and up to Edinburgh Castle as well. Unfortunately, Dave missed the big Reynolds gathering on Easter Sunday ... read more

Stirling Castle Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Stirling By SmartieMarch 30th 2007 Today we went to Stirling Castle in Stirling, Scotland. My Uncle Kevin took the day off work so we could go. Its quite a cute little town with a lot of history. The castle was pretty cool, being able to go through all the rooms. We went to the cemetary where my Great Great Grandpa was buried which was right down from the castle. We packed a lunch and since it was a pretty good day we sat outside the castle on the castle grounds and ate our lunch. This was my very first castle that I had seen since I'd been here so I was pretty int... read more

Stirling Europe » United Kingdom » Scotland » Stirling By lgh5000March 15th 2007The day after Jen's arrival, we started our 2 day treck in Scotland (my favorite place in the world). We rented a VW minivan (mind you, European vans are MUCH smaller than American ones), and fit the 6 of us in it. 2 in the front, 3 squished in the middle, and 1 even more squished in the back. It was a lot of fun ;) Our first stop was Stirling. We went up to the castle, took a hike around that area, and then drove to the William Wallace Monument. It was a good first taste of Scotland for Joe, Matt, Ross, and Kristen.... read more

After big night and only 3 hours sleep, I managed to drag myself out of bed and have breakfast in the hostel canteen before it closed. The whole group had also managed to muster by our scheduled leaving time of 10am. However, our bus driver was running late, and decided to delay our leaving for an hour. We waited around for 11am, thinking ‘I could be in bed right now’, and then we all jumped on the coach and headed out to Stirling. Our first stop was the Wallace Monument, high up on the protruding hill. The monument was built 1869 to commemorate Sir William Wallace, one of Scotland’s greatest hero’s. In 1297, he and his vastly outnumbered followers swooped down from ‘Wallace Pass’ to defeat the English forces at the Battle of Stirling Bridge. We ... read more

Yeah I'm here with my Scottish family, so good to see them, they make me laugh so much. The first day I arrived we went to Ayr, nice town. I had a scottish breakfast, not keen on black pudding! Today we went to Stirling Castle, Banockburn and the wallace monument. SO much history 9it was great. I climbed the monument, a memorial to William Wallace the hero of Scotland, (Braveheart) all the way up these tiny narrow spiral 246 steps. I got a certificate to prove it! An the view at the top was amazing, but freezing. Scotland is beautiful. Then we went to the famous battle of bannockburn sight and I got to try out all the old weapons fun! Stirling Castle was reall nice, on topof a hill with another great view it had ... read more
