Not a great night's sleep, so I was pretty tired when I hauled myself out of bed. I enjoyed a quick breakfast before it was time to leave. I had really enjoyed staying in Stornoway and would love to come back and explore the area so more. But today we were off to the Isle of Harris and then making our way across to the Isle of Skye, so it would be another busy day. We did a quick Tesco stop to pick up some supplies as we wouldn't really be stopping in many places with civilisation. As we were driving out of town, I noticed that a lot of the shops were religious ones, charity shops and bookstores selling religious texts. We asked our guide about this and she told us that the Outer Hebrides ... read more

Today's travels are courtesy of the EX- hurricane Ganzalo. Another new phrase from the UK. Extreme high winds with rain, sleet and hail. Temps dropped from 17 down to 4. Very unusual for this area. After a breakfast of poached eggs & haggis we left the Morangie area and went to look for The Old Nigg Church. I had found this on the Historic Scotland website. It is signifigant because of it's Pictish stone which dates back to 700 AD. When St. Columba brought Christianity to the area he was converting the Pictish inhabitants. The stone shows their original beliefs on one side & Christian beliefs on the other. The graveyard had another interesting stone. The Cholera Stone. It was believed that Cholera was caused by bad Miasma's (air that came from decaying bodies). When one ... read more

Geo: 57.4131, -6.19377Portree, Isle of Skye, ScotlandWhen we got close to town about 5:12 p.m. the sky had cleared up for the most part and the ground looked like it had not rained at all here. People were walking around without coats even though it was still very windy and only 54º F! And this is the type of weather they have in the middle of summer!! We pulled up to the town center to get our overnight bags and walked a very short distance up the street to our hotel, the Tongadale Hotel. The keys for the rooms were in the doors. I am back to sharing a room tonight since they did not have any more space available. Oh joy! L We had about 30 minutes to look around town and then we sat ... read more

Geo: 57.4131, -6.19377We left Tullycross on Tuesday morning about 10:00AM. We drove up Loch Lomand and on towards Skye. It was a cloudy and cool day. We stopped at the Eilean Donan Castle before crossing the bridge to Skye. It is one of the most photographed castles in all of Scotland. It was quite cloudy and the clouds were quite low, so we could'nt see the surrounding mountains. We drove over the bridge and up to our Ashaig B&B at Edinbane. It was very nice. The hosts are kind of batty, though. On Wednesday, we toured the Dunvegan Castle and gardens. We also drove around the north west side of Skye. The weather was cloudy in the morning, but by the afternoon it had cleared up and was quite nice. On Thursday, we toured the northeast side ... read more
