On Friday, 19 December I took a day-trip to St Andrew's. This was just over an hour's train ride from Edinburgh Waverley. The train calls at Leuchars, about five miles from the town of St Andrew's. While there is regular bus service to and from St Andrew's I walked what's called the Fife Coastal Path instead. It was a bit chilly but the sun was bright (as bright as it possibly can in early winter in Scotland) so I decided to take advantage of the nice day to check out the scenery on my way to St Andrew's. The town is well-known for multiple reasons, one of which is that golf was 'invented' here, of course (pun intended). On the walk into town the path travels right along the edge of The Royal and Ancient Golf ... read more

The hard part was getting there! We (well, especially me) like to have two seats together instead of the usual three in most airplanes. This is especially important during an overseas flight, which can become very uncomfortable after sitting so long. I found that KLM, which is operated by Air France and Delta, offered 2-seat rows on their Airbus A330 flights from Seattle to Amsterdam. We flew from San Francisco to Seattle, then to Amsterdam, and then it was a short trip to Glasgow from Amsterdam. When we arrived at Seattle we found our flight was delayed about an hour, which meant we would miss our flight from Amsterdam to Glasgow. We went to the ticket counter and explained our situation. An agent spent a lot of time trying to get us on another flight, with ... read more

Day 11; I can't believe how fast the time has passed, in one week I will be on my way home. Today we headed south and stopped in a picturesque little village called Pitlochry. It's a small theater town with the usual touristy shops. There is also a salmon ladder here that actually counts the number of salmon that swim up the ladder. This area is known for its salmon fishing, permits are required. We then traveled to Blair Castle, the home of the Duke of Atholl, who is the only man in Britain to have a private army. Again there are no words to describe the beauty of the architecture and finishes of this still inhabited castle. Next stop, St Andrews, my picture is at the 18th hole of the Old course, not really a ... read more

Today we all got up early and packed a picnic. We set out in the car and headed to Dollar to visit Castle Campbell which is set high up in the forest of Dollar Glen. We parked and walked to the amazing castle. The castle was built over time with parts being added by new owners. The oldest part is called the castle gloom which is a high tower with four floors and a roof walk, this was built in 1430. We had so much fun exploring this great building running up and down the stairs, in and out of rooms like children. Once on the roof the views were spectacular, we could see for miles with hillside and trees to one side and on the other an open valley over looking the village of Dollar. ... read more

April 26, 2012 – St Andrews Today was Damian's round of the Old Course at St Andrews – talk about having one excited Husband! The weather was extremely cold, and a few showers came across the region but I don't think it mattered at all – Damian was able to tick something off his “bucket list” by playing at The Home of Golf. I spent the day exploring St Andrews – it's not a big place, just a nice village. There are some great shops, and I also walked up to St Andrews Cathedral – which was really interesting. There is just so much history in the UK – we have no concept of history in Australia. It's our last night at Cambo House tonight – we'll be sad to leave tomorrow. Tomorrow we are heading ... read more

April 24, 2012 – St Andrews We're here! We arrived this morning in St Andrews, and Damian reckons he's died and gone to heaven. There are more golf courses here than you can poke a stick at (or a club at) and they're all beautiful courses. You drive along a road, to see sheep and dairy farms mingling with golf courses, all nestled up against the ocean. I'm in heaven too – the countryside is just beautiful, so you could say that St Andrews has been Tailormade just for us! The golfists amongst you should get that wee pun LOL We have spent a wonderful day exploring Cambo Estate. Cambo Estate is stunning. There is no other word to describe it. Cambo House itself is awe-inspiring – a grand manor home. We are staying in “The ... read more

Greg was up at 5am, out of the room by 5.15am and he headed over to line up to get on the Old Course to play. I called at 8am, i could hear lots of wind in the background, but GREAT news, he was on and playing. A group of 4 had pulled out so he'd just hit off and thought the ball had hit the water!!! Will leave it to him to fill in the rest. Kids and i trying to get organised and head to the movies. Went and saw Pirates, pretty good, great bus trip to the top of Dundee and back to the snow. Weather today back in Yorkshire was blizzards, again more great luck! or a St Andrews miracle. St Andrews, let me set the scene. 6.15am, 1.5 degrees, the wind ... read more

Saint Andrews is a small town on the west coast, about two hours from Edinburgh by bus. We don't know for sure, but we guessed it's about the size of Salem, MA. It is known as the birthplace of golf (whether or not this is true, I don't know, but there was a fairly large golf course and several golf shops around town) and home of the oldest University in Scotland, which seems to have inspired a ton of international students (many from the US) to study abroad here. Similar to Edinburgh, American accents in this town were everywhere. The town looked to me like a cross between a fishing village and a college town. Interestingly, the same can be said for Salem. Unlike Salem, Saint Andrews has not beaten the daylights out of the dead ... read more

The day started off sunny and pretty cool. Today we travelled to St. Andrews and then to Edinburgh. At St Andrews we learned that the Scots put up St. Andrew’s church to show the cardinals in England that they were capable of having their own church separate from England. The church supposedly had some bones from one of the disciples, St. Andrew and in the day people would go on pilgrimages just to see this church and touch the casket holding the bones of St. Andrew. The church was enormous and very ornate. Later a man named John Knox gave a rousing speech at the local Presbyterian church denouncing the Catholic religion and how the bishops lived in opulence while the people were in poverty. This led to the whole town converting to Protestant and heading ... read more
