Thursday morning, an hour after we left the hostel, we made our first stop at a particularly scenic point in the mountains of the western Scottish Highlands, overlooking a range called "the seven sisters" or something like that. And I realized I had left my camera in the hostel. No one who knows me will be surprised by this; its the kind of thing I do all the time. The short version of this story is that my camera and I were eventually reunited in Edinburgh on Sunday around 8pm. In the meantime, the rest of my pictures had to be taken via Apple product. Which is why they look a bit like watercolor paintings. And I looked like a massive tool. I told the other people on the tour that they were free to pretend ... read more

Today we had intermittent weather. Some say intermittent sun, others say intermittent rain. By the end of the day we had neither, just sun, cloud and wind at the same time. The wind was strong enough to cancel the ferries to Muck. So the saying, “You can’t see Muck for Rum and Eigg” was almost true. This time though, it was because of haze brought on by the wind. This was our second full day on Mull and we decided to explore some of the narrow roads around the northern part of the island. We started on B8073, a single lane road with many pot holes. Next we took a side road which didn’t have a code but was single lane, with very few passing places and more pot holes. After negotiating our way past a ... read more

Today we decided to make the trip to Iona, our reason for coming to Mull. We are staying on Mull for three nights and we have to choose the best day for the trip. Since arriving in Scotland we have been having trouble picking the best day. For the past few days we have had great weather but the forecast has now reverted to the familiar Scottish weather pattern, rain. So we took a chance today and headed off. We chose a shorter route over now familiar single lane roads with regular passing places. The road today was a B road and the quality of the surface was sometimes very rough. Looking out over the sea we could see many smaller islands appearing out of the gloom. At one point we saw a car coming towards ... read more

With diesel prices on the mainland a little lower than on Skye, we filled the tank this morning and still gulped at the price. We’ll need to keep it filled now, with only a week left until we return the car in Manchester. Today we completed a zigzag drive past lochs and mountains to reach the departure point of the ferry to the Isle of Mull and thence to Tobermory where our hotel for the next three nights awaits. Highlights of the drive on this fine dry morning included reflections on the glassy waters of still lochs, where huge slopes of grass and heather plunged down to the edge and autumn colours tinged the foliage lining the road. At Glenfinnan we stopped near the edge of the loch to look at a monument commemorating the Jacobite ... read more

The August Bank Holiday provided a great opportunity to head up to the West Coast - coupled with the offer of accommodation in Nick (Zogs) and Ceci's new "Swiss Chalet" and an excellent deal on flights for the 3 of us the decision was made. We left very early on the Thursday morning which effectively gave us 5 days and 4 nights away - a proper break. Only having to take 2 days precious holiday was a real bonus too. A taxi to the airport, an easy Easy Jet flight (free speedy boarding courtesy of Heidi) and swift car hire at Glasgow airport, meant that having left home at 0500hrs we were in Glen Coe surrounded by mountains for lunch! A breakfast bap with views to die for was devoured and Heidi had had her first ... read more

Highlands Ah!

Tuesday morning, we got up and jumped in the car again in order to go to Finlaggan (on the way to Port Askaig) where they used to crown the lord of the isles and where they ruled form the 12th to about the 15th century....I won't write about it, you can read more here: http://www.finlaggan.com/about.asp. I wasn't really sure what to expect, but they do have a little visitor's centre (with some detail and artifacts), and you can see the ruins of some of the buildings (although the stone paths to the other islands involved are now under water since the water levels are much higher these days). All for a whopping price of 3GBP....I found it interesting, but part of that may be a family connection and we spent over an hour here, but may ... read more

We left Inverness around 9:30 in the morning via a train destined for Glasgow. This time, we had a much better trip: our seats were reserved and we had a place for our luggage...so other than a family that needed to learn how to use their inside voices, the trip was more what we were used to when we had been to Scotland previously. We arrived at Glasgow Queen Street Station shortly before 1 PM and our flight wasn't until 5, but since we had bulky bags, we decided to head straight to the airport (probably our most expensive taxi ride at 25GBP). Cor and I only had a baggage allowance of 20 kg for the flight to Islay and we knew that we were going to be over with all of the clothes shopping (and ... read more

The boat rode through the waves, swaying from side to side as the wind whipped passed my face. I held on to the rail around the deck tightly as I searched the surrounding waters with my binoculars, hoping for a glimpse of the animal I was looking for. But there was nothing except a few little sailing boats bobbing in the sea. I was on a seven-hour whale-watching trip around the waters of the Isle of Mull on the west coast of Scotland, a place renowned for it’s marine wildlife. Accompanying me on this voyage was my Dad, a pair of newlyweds, and a middle-aged couple and a few others. We were being guided by a hardy crew from Sea life Surveys a company that has traversed the waters of west Scotland since 1982 and has ... read more

As per usual we take our time hitting the road with John and Ingrid questioning whether we have left our departure time too late to be able to see The Isle of Mull. The weather has again changed and we are bathed by a warm and sunny sky. From the lodge we head a couple of kilometres north and take the free Corran car ferry across the loch, turning left we wind our way towards Lochaline where we will catch another car ferry to the small port of Salen on the Isle of Mull. It is easy to underestimate how long driving in this area will take. Most of the roads are nothing more than single tracked lanes with passing bays strategically placed every hundred meters or so. It doesn’t take us long to understand the ... read more
