Today was a driving day for a taste of the Highlands. Out through Dunblane and past Ochtertyre to see the 'gatehouse' where I spent the first part of winter '96/97 with my mate Bill. Not quite as grand as the big house 'Ochtertyre' - wasn't cheeky enough to drive past the guard to see the 14th century estate home, maybe next time though. Scotland was putting on a grand show today, Dunblane - rain, Callandar - sleet, Crianlarich well into the Trossachs now - snow. Keep telling myself it is spring!! The scenery through the Glens and past the Bens More and Lui is spectacular at the best of times but covered in snow with a few glimpses of sun on them and it is sensational. The light off the heather always has a red tinge ... read more

We decided to go to Oban to celebrate Trish's birthday. It was only a couple of hours away in the car from Glasgow and we had been told about a route which involved minor roads and spectacular views. In the end we had to play it safe and stick to main roads because visibility was about 5 yards! Welcome to the Scottish summer!! Fortunately the rain stopped just before we got to Oban and we were soon checking into our room in the lovely Corriemar House. The views over the Sound of Kerrara are spectacular from any angle, but just perfect seen from the comfort of your own room. You even get to see the ferries going to and fro. Believe me, that's quite a sight. They seem so close you could touch them. After settling ... read more

No sooner had we arrived in Glasgow than we were away for the weekend. The weather forecast was hideous and we were secretly pleased that our plans had had to change a little. Russ's cousin, Ruth, had invited us over to their caravan for a weekend with her family and offered to lend us a tent so we could camp outside. The forecast, however, was about as grim as it gets so we decided to go on the Saturday morning rather than the Friday evening. Lady luck smiled on us as the tent had been forgotten and we would all have to squeeze into the caravan for one night only. The price to pay - a trip into Glasgow to find a haberdashery as Ruth needed to knock up a pair of curtains in a hurry. ... read more

Vreemd genoeg was het ... read more

AROUND MULL 1. Staffa & Treshnish Isles Wildlife Tour. At 10.00am on an overcast Sunday morning we stepped aboard our cruise boat together with about 30 other people, looking forward to seeing puffins for the first time. We had booked this cruise before we left to make sure we had a space on the boat, but we could just have arrived and it would have been OK. The weather didn’t look too promising, windy and showery, but our captain reassured us, promising that the showers would stop and we’d have fine weather shortly and he was right. The boat sailed out towards two small islands, Coll and Tiree, stopping along the way to look at some bottle nosed dolphins. They were spotted near a group of gannets who were feeding on a shoal of fish. The ... read more

Au Revoir to France and Hi to Scotland There was a delay in the plane’s departure from Charles de Gaulle airport, so our arrival in Glasgow was two hours behind schedule. We spent our time reading and using the free Wifi available in the airport and finally it was boarding time. We knew we’d arrived when we heard beautiful lilting Scottish accents and saw familiar street names, Buchanan, George, Queen and Argyll Streets. Our hotel, “Alexander Thompson”, was an old hotel, but had clean spacious rooms and a huge Scottish breakfast, so we couldn’t ask for more. Getting the tickets for Oban and the ferry to Mull, was easy. The trains all leave from Queen Street Station, which was only a ten minute walk away. We bought our tickets the afternoon we arrived, so we'd be ... read more

It was Suzy's birthday! We went to the Annual Scottish Boat Show. There were really nice boats all over the place. Big, small, Smart-boats, motor and sail. We went on one boat that I bet you could stay on it for a couple weeks at a time. It had a TV, Fridge, 2 bathtubs, 3 bed rooms, one with 2 singles and 2 double rooms. We all wanted it. But it was 3/4 of a million dollar boat. Dad and I wondered off and had a Venison burger, and then found a birthday present for Suzy. Then we searched for Suzy, Steve, Mason and Brittany once we found them we looked around a little more. There saw a guy use these bouts that shot water to fly and tricks. Then we retuned to the hotel. The ... read more

We stayed at our cousin's hotel in Dunoon a lovely little town in Scotland. The hotel is called ''The West End Hotel''. We arrived late at night on the ferry from Gourouk. That night we had pizza and went to bed. I got up late in the morning around 11:00am me and Brittany took the dog for a walk. When we got back I did some typing it was a pretty relaxing day. Later that day we went down town and I got cold, so every store that looked interesting we went in to warm up. Dad and I went to the grocery store and in to a little café for a snack before heading back to the hotel. Dad and me stayed up late talking and laughing. This morning everyone got up early to go ... read more

It was another grey, overcast morning but still not threat of rain and it looked like we would get another days driving in with dry road conditions. On paper in the atlas the drive today to the Isle of Mull didn’t look that long but we weren’t naive enough to think that our target just short of Tobermory on Mull could be made at an easy pace. As we wanted to take a circuitous route for the scenery we needed to ensure we kept to a bit of a timetable as we also a short boat ride across Loch Aline to be factored in as well and there was a timetable for the car ferry to think about as well. We met the young women from last night at breakfast again and carried on our conversations ... read more

The second part of the walking adventure was undertaken by 2 members of the original crew (Kirsty & Tania) and a new willing addition (Caroline). Unfortunately the other 2 original members (Debbie & Lynn) had other commitments, so they took a reign check on this occasion but will be back for the finale next year! The route commenced from the Drovers Inn (Inveranan) to the Kings House Hotel (Glencoe), 31 miles from start to finish. Day 1 - Inveranan to Crainlarach Day 2 - Crainlarach to Bridge of Orchy Day 3 - Bridge of Orchy to Glencoe Drove home on Tuesday via Comrie, Crief & Perth Weather was varied on day 1 mainly sunny with overcast spells, day 2 light showers and day 3 a constant drizzle with some heavy showers and the appearance of the ... read more
