Geo: 56.4104, -5.46972(quote from Thomas Crawford)I sat with Martin at breakfast this morning. He's been guiding for around 35 years. Before that, he was an archeologist for a while, and he owned a restaurant. He's an interesting guy, but I wish he would talk linearly (is that a word?). He'll start lecturing on a subject, then it's like he gets distracted by something shiny so he'll start going on about that, and then it's back to the original subject but the reversal was so quick you don't even realize what's going on. When we're walking around a town or whatever, he'll stop to talk about something and then abruptly, "Follow me!" And he darts off. It's like following Willy Wonka through the chocolate factory, only there are no snozzberries.James, on the other hand, is almost taciturn. ... read more

Geo: 56.4104, -5.46972Another gloriously beautiful day, though still cold. When the wind kicks up, it's very bracing, as the English might say.We drove first thing to Loch Ness to take a boat down the loch to Urquhart Castle (pron. ER-kert). The loch is pretty impressive, being 23 miles long and 750 feet deep at some points. It's not very wide, though; maybe a mile or so? This morning, the water was a mirror and could not have been more lovely. I mostly stayed inside the boat (just our group was on it) but did go out in front a few times to take photos. Brrr! The loch, the surrounding hills and tiny towns, the castle … it was all so impossibly pretty! We docked at Urquhart Castle and were the first ones at the Gate House. It ... read more

Blog 6 Edinburgh/St Andrews Scotland Oslo/Copenhagen/Edinburgh flight interesting! SAS airlines underestimated the number passengers on the Copenhagen/Edinburgh leg travelling with golf bags. We had a huge head wind and arrived an hour late only to find the golf bags were not with us. They had been sent via Stockholm along with many other golf bags and the queue at the missing luggage counter was very long. Then the hire car queue for Europcar was really long and moving painfully slowly as well – The British Open brings thousands of visitors to the airport each day!! It was good to get the hire car and finally get out of the airport. It should have been easy to get to our accommodation accommodation at Clatto Bothy, near Cupar but the road was closed for 2 hours for resurfacing. ... read more

30 June Woke to a warm day and sunny sky and visibility across the Loch was magnificent. We decided to explore around Loch Leven and headed south just a few miles and took a B road towards Kinlochleven. We made several stops to take photos and enjoy the magnificent vies at shore level and looked in awe at the huge mountains on the other side. We soon arrived at Kinlochleven, a small town but with good facilities although it did look a little on the tired side. The visitor centre had an exhibition about the aluminium industry and the power station which uses water from a reservoir high in the mountains to generate electricity. There was a choice of walks and we opted for the 2 hour one to the small dam. We should have guessed ... read more

We bid farewell to the Isle of Skye and headed towards our next night's stop, Oban. Our first sight was a brief stop to see Loch Garry, a lake that has the shape of the country of Scotland. It is a bit hard to see in the photo due to a number of trees blocking the view. We again stopped briefly to see the Commando Memorial near the village of Spean Bridge. Around noon we reached Lochy Bridge near Fort William where we were scheduled to take a tour of the famous Ben Nevis Distillery. Since the tour would last an hour or so, we stopped nearby to pick up some lunch in a decent little convenience store or supermarket. We bought a couple of pie pastries and bags of chips to eat after we left ... read more

So I had a few days off last week and instead of spending it in the University library actually doing work, I decided to pack up my pack for a two days and head west. I had one goal on this trip: see a tiny puffin. I'm very happy to say that I did and that it was INCREDIBLE. So let's start at the start and go accordingly. I took an evening train to Glasgow and got a private room at the Eurohostel smack bang in the middle of town. If you're ever planning on spending a night in Glasgow, I can't recommend it enough. Because I was working on a budget and the trip was all last minute, I opted out of fine dining (there are seriously nice looking restaurants in the upper left of ... read more

Well hi everybody, it's been quite a while since I have written anything we have been very busy. I suppose we have to choose what we want to see and what interests us or we would be here for so long. As you all know Glen is very interested in Genealogy and has done years of research into all our family's trees, and as you all know that if an Australian finds a convict in their family tree well then your royalty. Well Glens, Jane Langley 7th great grandmother came out on the first fleet for allegedly stealing two crowns from a gentlemans pocket. We had the transcript from the Old Bailey and address where she was born, work and lived. She was born in Mayfair as her parents work for Lord Sackville. She was a Tamboura ... read more
