God’s Country is a Scottish name for all of the Highlands, but our destination today particularly deserves this designation. The island of Iona is the most beautiful place I’ve ever been, and it also has a thriving religious community. It’s one of those wonderful unspoiled places that you read about in fairy tales and wish still existed. From Oban’s harbour, we took a ferry to the Island of Mull. Ally drove the bus onto the ferry, although we all got off and sat on the top deck. Sometimes you can see seals, minke whales, and even dolphins in this part of the Atlantic Ocean. I did catch a glimpse of a seal swimming with its head above water! I also saw a few “oil slicks,” smooth patches on the surface that indicate that a large ... read more

Ouch! Today was hard work. A strong north westerly wind right in our faces made cycling very difficult, especially as we had 4 or 5 big climbs to traverse. We left Ben and Silvy's at 8.15 am and arrived in Tarbert (which is just north of Arran) at about 8.30pm. Part of the reason the day was so long was because we had two ferry journeys - one onto Arran and one off. The scenery around here is spectacular, as it was around Dumfries. So a mixed day of fantastic views and hard cycling. Also, we are definitely feeling the wear and tear of 7 days in the saddle. We are getting sore and achey and each day it takes us a little longer to warm up and get going. Our packs feel heavy and we ... read more

Weather Report Windy showers - much the same as yesterday. Another ‘wasted’ day. Yet again used the i-net facility (15 minutes / £1 !!!!) in MacGregors Roadside Bar. Forecast still very poor so changed flight to Friday at some cost but obviously saved on several days accommodation / food. ... read more

Weather Report Windy showers - and that was the best of it. Incredibly strong gusts at times with some tents suffering damage. Not mine - so far ! Could make little sense of various weather forecasts but decided that the uncertainty of that plus sitting in the tent spending money suggest a need to bring the expedition to an end. Have booked flight Glasgow to Stansted for Tuesday afternoon. In the late morning I walked through the nearby forest to Torsay castle and then returned along the foreshore. Would have been some good photo opportunities if the sun had been shining. Rest of day spent reading paper - again ! Some suggestion weather may improve tomorrow - hope so. ... read more

Weather Report Windy showers - and that was the best of it. Achieved very little today - see above. Several visits to local store for what was basically comfort food. Read the newspaper from cover to cover. Evening sat in a communal area chatting with some of our EU friends - convivial. ... read more

Weather Report First half of the day mix of cloud and sunny periods. Generally adequate for the purpose ! From mid-afternoon incredibly heavy showers increasing in frequency. That seems to be the forecast for the coming week - not good. Set off with bike hired from campsite at about 8.15am. Drove sedately north along the road that follows the east coast of Mull. Nothing of exceptional interest to see. The landscape on the landward side of the road is largely bracken moorland leading up to high hills while the shoreline is a mix of lock rocky promontories separating rocky bays. As usual many photo stops and when I reached Salen about halfway along the 21 mile journey I detoured half a mile to its rather run down pier. I had a brief snack / rest and ... read more

Weather Report Generally overcast with sunny breaks in the cloud to begin with. Showers increasing in frequency and intensity in the afternoon. Mid-afternoon rained violently for best part of two hours. Brighter evening. Crossing to Mull was less than an hour and uneventful. Twenty minute walk to campsite and shortly after 9am my tent was erected. Spent morning looking around campsite, shopping in village store and doing my washing. After midday snack walked a little way along the shore but was so tired quickly retreated to tent where I slept soundly for a couple of hours despite a torrential storm. Pottered around for the rest of the day and completed these blogs. Forecast is better for tomorrow so I intend to hire a bike for the day (from the campsite). It proved impossible to arrange a ... read more

Weather Report Began overcast with low cloud / drizzle. Continued same much of day - some sunshine in late afternoon - too late. Not the weather I required for my short trip to Oronsay. Bathed in the sea and then stood in the rain to wash away the salt. Two separate sessions on the i-net in the local council service centre (someone else had booked a time slot). Updated blogs, chatted in guy in charge of office and then set off on bike to Oronsay. Arrived at The Strand (causeway like Or with Colonsay) to find that the westerly wind had delayed the tide so that the area was still water covered. Set off in bare feet and found this to be little more than ankle deep although some sharp shells underfoot. Arriving on Oronsay I ... read more

Also, known as the middle of no where. So small that there is one whole store in the area for thirty miles. Currently the crew is staying in an enormous mansion known as Ardtornish House. The estate is on 1500 acres of land and there are like 25 rooms in the house, not to mention about five kitchens. I've run on the Highlands and screamed Heathcliff! I've also fallen down the stairs in the house and hurt myself. My elbows, head and legs are still very bruised and every time I breathe my ribs hurt. Otherwise, all is well. We've had great meals every night and fireworks on the fourth. Scotland is very lax on fireworks. The Island of Mull and the island of Iona are amazing. I think I will come back here for my ... read more

Took of to Mull to meet some family friends that had a cottage over their near town of Finniphort. Its true what they say, Scotland is such a beutiful country sometimes people don't realise whats on their front door. When I was their the water was just so clear, and it was as warm as I could handle aswell. Spent 5 days their, just doing things all over the island. This is the kind of Scotland I like to see. Was also chance to use the new digicam I just got. Anyway heres some pics I took guys.... read more
