Hello Boys and Girls! Camille and I went up to the northwest coast of Scotland last week. We went to a town called Oban. It is on the water. We took a ferry across the water to the Island Of Mull. A ferry is a large boat that can transport people and their cars across the water. There was a restaurant and even a gift shop on the ferry! Camille and I liked going to the top deck and looking out at the little islands, birds, and water as we went by. The Island of Mull does not have many people living on it. A long time ago people were forced to move off the island so the sheep farmers could have more sheep there. As you might guess there are many sheep still there. There ... read more

The weather was so foul during my stay in Fort William that I didn’t stray far from the hostel. Arriving in the depressing drizzle on Sunday afternoon, I’d asked if there was anywhere in town to rent a movie - and the lovely Czech hostel manager responded by lending me her entire DVD collection. Weather forgotten, I was settling in when invited to partake of the delicious dinner the afro’d South African assistant manager was cooking up for a group of friends. In the midst of such generous hospitality I was in no hurry to leave. Being at the base of Scotland’s premier mountain range, the hostel was equipped with gear cupboard and a drying room, and served as base for a number of day walkers, cyclists and hard-out trampers. I toyed with the idea of ... read more

Wednesday, August 8th - Isle of Mull- Iona Excursion We drive across Mull and take a ferry to Iona. Let’s read what the Itinerary has to say, shall we? “A leisurely day to relax and enjoy the best of the Scottish western isles. Drive across Mull for a visit to the beautiful and fascinating Isle of Iona. This is the burial place of many Scottish kings and chiefs, including Macbeth. And it is here that in 563 A.D., St. Columba established one of the earliest Christian monasteries in the British Isles. Tuesday, August 7th - Isle of Skye to Isle of Mull: Since it is now almost a month later and I’m writing the final days (finally), I’m going to start with a quote from our lovely itinerary, “Call at the Clan Donald Centre for a visit to its MUSEUM OF THE ISLES and an insight into 13 centuries of clan history before boarding your ferry at Armadale to sail across the Sound of Sleat. Rejoin the mainland at Mallaig and follow the "Road to the Isles," pausing at Glenfinnan, the scene of the raising of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s standard in 1745; then follow the shores of lovely Loch Linnhe. The final l... read more

Hello hello :D Just another little note before things get crazy around here. The hotel's been under renovations for the past little while and that's always a blast with a 400 y/o building! Ceilings falling in, windows leaking, etc lotsa good fun. The amount of tourists on the island is on steady increase and Easter weekend is setting up to be a mob! We've got 4 new people coming the end of this week so getting everyone organized and on the same page should be an experience. Two of those people are moving into the caravan with Dave & I so hopefully everyone gets along since it's such a small space. We've been meeting some new friends and spending more time with the locals, everyone is so great. The new chef at the Calgary hotel, ... read more

Well the forest rally has come and gone... seemed to be quite a good weekend. Although Dave and I didn't get to see much of it since we were working the whole time... kind of a trend starting I think. We haven't been that busy this month, a wee bit boring actually. And work is a bit unsure at the moment, since it seems the staff are all about to cut and run. We both really like Nick and Debbie so hopefully things work out, we'll just have to wait and see. The island is quite secluded and it would be easier if we had a car (you know me always picking the most difficult places to live ;) But in general it is such a wonderful place, the summer is going to be so different ... read more

Hi All :) Just a note to say we made it through the holidays away from home. We definately missed spending it with friends and family but also enjoyed the differences. The dance was great, it was just too bad it wasn't on all night. Just when I was getting up the nerve to try a traditional scottish dance "last song of the night" came over the mic! Shoot! oh well next time I'll try to learn same steps. Chatted most of the night with a friendly couple from Glasgow (David & Katherine) who offered a room when we are in the city next. Unfortunately I didn't get any pics since I forgot the camera. Here are some scenic ones though, from our many walks around the area. The restaurant is slowing down now but the ... read more

Just a little holiday note from Dave and I :) Everything is going well here, the weather is still quite wet. Unusually wet we've been told, even for Mull. But we managed a great walk yesterday without getting soaked. There's a dirt trail that you can almost drive on the goes up the coast to Quinish Point. It's an amazing walk which I'm sure we'll do often. There will be pics coming of a beautiful rainbow we saw on the coast. Christmas was grand, we had a Christmas goose with Nick & Debbie. It seems though that Christmas isn't as big as New Year's here so the real celebrations will be tomorrow. Tonight everyone will leave the pub and head to their homes around 11:00 for the ringing of the bells at midnight. Then everyone goes ... read more

Hello again, Sorry there's a little gap there :) We got here OK and are in the middle of getting comfortable with our new jobs and meeting all the locals. It is very beautiful here, hard to compare with Waterton but the awe is the same. I don't think I'll ever get tired of the scenary. We are both very very happy, definately enjoying ourselves. It does rain a lot here and it's pretty much been raining since we got here, although yesterday and today seem to be showing more hope of blue skies. Our last two nights in Glasgow were great, didn't do a whole lot, but the hostel was very comfortable. Euro hostel is probably the best one we've been in so far, like a hotel with all it's amenities, but cheaper. We found ... read more

After a few days in Glasgow, we boarded a train to the port town of Oban on the west coast and took a ferry to the Isle of Mull where we began our first WWOOFing experience. WWOOF (Willing Workers On Organic Farms) is a worldwide organization placing volunteers on organic farms of all varieties. This farm was located on the far west end of Mull, an hours bus ride from the ferry. Mull is beautiful and feels quite remote, especially compared to where we've been. Most of it is farm land (sheep, cattle, and veg, as they say) spread among green, rolling hills and a few larger mountains. The farm we were on is a vegetable farm on a small croft of land about 100 yards from the rocky shore - a gorgeous setting. They have ... read more
