We have an early afternoon flight today from Dubai to London Gatwick, so had plenty of time to relax in the plush hotel before going to the airport. At about 11.30am, we boarded the hotel shuttle back to the airport. Although we have not bought anything since the flight yesterday, our hold bags weighed in today at two kilograms more. Not sure what has happened there as we had not added anything to them. Dubai International Airport is very compartmentalized so we decided it would be best to find the gate before getting anything to eat. Unfortunately, when we got there all we could find was a Costa Coffee. Got a couple of toasted sandwiches and some hot drinks. Not really what we planned but they were nice. Our Emirates flight left about 20 minutes late ... read more

We arrived back into the UK from Las Vegas about 10.00am this morning. We were both feeling pretty tired, but thankfully Theresa is feeling a little better. After picking up our luggage and a few drinks for the room, we make our way over to the Premier Inn within the North terminal. It was about midday at this point. As check-in does not open until 2.00pm, they wanted an extra £10.00 for us to check-in at 12.00 instead. The £10.00 fee is new and rather ruthless seeing as this is an international airport. We were really tired so decided it would be worth it to be able to get some sleep now. About 5 minutes after, we made to our room on the 8th floor, the fire alarm went off. We were unsure if this was ... read more

Well, it started as a quiet musing to Sam, who was soon to begin the next leg of her world adventures, back in April. Soon, flights were booked, plans were made, and all of my belongings were boxed up and crammed back into my childhood bedroom at my parents' house (thanks, by the way. Again). April doesn't seem that long ago now, but September seemed a very long way away then... Crikey these things creep up on you don't they! Now it's D-Day. My brother Tim woke up at an unseemly hour to bring me all the way to Gatwick Airport (thanks, again), and soon I'll be boarding a plane, having checked in a bag carefully packed with optimal efficiency, to the maximum weight permitted on my flight booking. It's too late to have forgotten something. ... read more

On our original travel plans, we should have been arriving at Gatwick this afternoon on an EasyJet plane from Tenerife South. EasyJet were really excellent and refunded the fare for us on compassionate grounds. Unfortunately, last week we had to be in UK for George´s Mums funeral, so our holiday got extended by almost one week. Today we arrived at Gatwick Airport by hire car that we had picked up from Birmingham Airport last Wednesday. They gave the hire car a good inspection then we were pleased when they confirmed there was no damage. This is always a tense moment as we have had some bad experiences previously with UK car hire companies. As the car park in the Gatwick North Terminal is still shut because of ongoing structural issues, the car was returned to the ... read more

I will take you back to 4.30 in the morning, after just 4 and a half hours of sleep you would be forgiven for thinking that a bunch of zombies were travelling today, but with Eagle Radio blaring down the corridor combined with a lot of coco pops, it is safe to say these zombies are EXTREMELY excited (as is Sulley!). We are now sitting in an exotic pub at Gatwick airport (I believe they call it 'spoons...;)) waiting for our second breakfast of the day! Check in went well and so far so good! First stop? Berlin! Hannah xo... read more

Aren’t airports strange places? They’re unlike anything in the real world. People hurrying to get in a queue of a hundred others who hurried there before them. People in clothes they’d never dream of wearing in public anywhere else - the vivid-pink jogging suit with matching trainers, the bright yellow-and-red-check cap with the oversized peak, the Rupert-like golf trousers with sandals. People of all shapes, sizes and colours, speaking languages you’ve never heard before. Pints of beer from the bar at eight o’clock in the morning. Fast-food, slow service, ‘have a nice day’. Harrods, Accessorize, Boots (et al) in an up-market high-street with prices to match. Like casinos in Las Vegas, there’s only artificial light, so it could be daytime, it could be night. Who knows? Who cares? It’s an airport. The signs all proclaim that ... read more

I remeber the day I left very clearly, not a hazy memory from nearly 4 months ago. I left home at 7pm and it was already dark. The temperature gage in the car read 3C, it had been an unusually sunny but cold October. From home it was a 40 minute drive through very typically English country lanes to the M23, then to Gatwick air port. My parents drove. I arrived at South terminal, familiar from my many flights to Edinburgh over the ast 18 months. I said goodbye to Mum and Dad, it wasn't sad it was more like see you later. I hate air ports. Even when you arrive allowing plenty of time there's always a sense of panic that I'm going to miss my flight. This may have to do with previously missing ... read more

9:45 PM London, on the last day of September in 2009, was pretty forgettable. By the time we flew away, the sun had failed to break through the clouds, but nor had any rain. It was just grey and dull, nothing more. It wasn’t particularly cold, but nor was it the kind of weather that got men of a certain age wearing Hawaiian shirts and sandals. The three hour flight to Iceland gradually saw these clouds fade away to be replaced by bright sunshine by the time the Atlantic Ocean had made way for the southern coast of Iceland’s Reykjanes peninsula. The majority of our preparations for Iceland had revolved around the assumption that it was going to be pretty cold, with it being just below the Arctic Circle and with us going outside of Iceland’s ... read more

Currently at Gatwick Airport slurping a skittles smoothie from a definitely "Will It Blend?" inspired milkshake bar in the duty free zone. Everything's gone as expected so far - the 2 expected hold ups, that is. My suitcase cost me an extra £45 to check in for being too heavy, expectedly, and I also had a little hold up getting through security because of the huge amount of electronic equipment in my hand luggage, which I'd put there to make the suitcase lighter. So, cue the security clerk coming along to empty everything out. While he did so he started chatting with me, I told him I was a musician blah blah, moving to Prague for 3 months, and it turned out he'd lived in Prague too (though he was obviously Polish) So he started quizzing ... read more
