It’s half-term break once again! Our choices of travel were limited because we currently do not have our passports. Therefore, we could not travel outside of the UK. Our passports are currently with the UK Border Agency awaiting approval to allow us to remain in England until August. So, we decided to visit the historic city of York for 3 days.York is located in the northern part of England, only a few hours drive from Edinburgh, Scotland. York was founded in AD 71 by the Romans. It is a lovely city which still has much of its original city walls in tact. We arrived in York by train on Tuesday afternoon. Total travel time was approximately 3 hours; the train from Aylesbury to London was 1 hour followed by a 2 hour trip from London ... read more

While I sleep, Deanna gets up extra early this morning to take more pictures of the town. We check out of our hostel, which looks like a hostel but has the environment and feeling of hotel. The residents don't interact the way we do at hostels. We get one of the worker to take a picture of us outside our hostel, so we remember what it looks like. The picture comes out crooked. Even though the bus station is within walking distance, we take a taxi, rather than dragging our luggage the whole way. The bus will go to Milton Keynes and let us off. Then Deanna and I will wait an hour to catch another bus back to Luton, which is only another 35 minutes. For part of the journey, we aren't seated together, because ... read more

We didn't get as much accomplished yesterday as we wanted. Everything closes so damn early! I guess that's how they keep the tourists here longer. I have noticed, however, that the people here are MUCH friendlier and more polite than in Luton, St. Albans, and London. I've always heard that it's friendlier in the north, and I see it. People actually get out of your way, when you're trying to pass by. People smile. People don't stop in the middle of the damn sidewalk to look at something; they step aside and then look. People hold doors and make friendly comments. People here actually see you. It's nice. Deanna and I sleep in until about nine before finally eating breakfast and starting our day. Of course, our first stop has to be the famous York Minster! York Minster "Built between 1220 and 1472," I read from the guide book, "York Minster is the largest medieval gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and is renowned worldwide as an artistic and architectural masterpiece." In order for a cathedral to be called a "minster", it has to have been built during that time period. This is the hugest cathedral I've ever seen! We go to the Undercroft first, which is the place where excavations have revealed Roman, Saxon, and Norman remains. Each of those groups had built a church/meeting area on this very spot, and the layers of the foundations are evident. Although we are unable to take ... read more

The city of York was founded by Roman soldiers in 61 A.D., because it sits at the crossing of two rivers--the Foss River and the Ouse River. Pieces of the original Roman walls still stand as well as the city gates. However, most of the city walls we see are from medieval times, when the Vikings had taken over the area. In fact, all the streets have Viking names. Instead of "Monk Street", it's called "Monkgate", because gate means street. They called the city Jorvik (and the "J" is pronounced like a "Y"), which is where we get the current name York. After the Vikings ruled, the Normans (who were basically another Viking group) busted up in here. The northern invaders were finally evicted in the 10th century by the Anglo-Saxons from the Denmark-Germany area. Deanna ... read more

February 7th At 9:55am me and my buddy Ian hopped on a train to York. The ride was very short (prob. 25 mins). The return ticket was expensive for the distance travelled. It cost 10.50 pounds which is about $15.25. However, the trip to York proved to be worth while. Upon arrival, we exited the train station and immediately noticed the Walls of York. In fact, York has more miles of intact city walls than anywhere else in England, and some sections of the walls date back to Roman times. However, most date back to the 12 to 14th century. They added a unique feel to the city that most modern cities seem to lack. We walked along the wall to the river Duse, which ran straight through the center of town. Next, we ran across ... read more
