This weekend our program organized an expedition to York. I had missed the first program-organized trip to Inverness (but I'd already been there, so it's ok) due to a field trip, so I was really looking forward to this one. Luckily, It didn't disappoint. We took a train down, following the coast. Rowan and I had pre-booked seats together, at a table, and met some interesting people on the way down, namely, a harried mom with two adorable blonde girls, a fashion buyer from york, who told us where to go while we were there, and a bio-chem graduate student from Alabama who should have been Norwegian. He looked like it, at least. Once we arrived we had little to no idea how to get to dinner, and only about 15 minutes before it started. Luckily ... read more

Well Phil has been over in Meribel for a few weeks now and he seems to be really enjoying the new job. we've still not go 100% confirmation of where we'll be but it's looking like Verbier in Switzerland. The accomodation that he's seen seems to be very small but he's confident that we NEED to take the wide screen tv. Well that's easy for him to say since i'm the one packing the van and doing the drive. Various contact details are email : flickitysplit@hotmail.com / philonsnow@hotmail.co.uk phils work mobile 0033614368937 so we'll still answer emails but i'll prob just up date this blog with what we're doing and attch photos etc for people to get jealous over!! ...my now favourite place in the world! I love it! Finally, after dreaming about going there ever since a few years ago, I finally got on that train and made the 4+ hour journey to York. Saturday 11th October 2008 So after about five hours sleep on Friday night, I got into dads car to head to the station to catch the 6.20am train to London Victoria. After saying goodbye to dad, I headed into the station to find the right platform. Waiting on the platform for a bit longer than planned as he train was a few minutes delayed. Made it to London around 7am and headed towards the underground to get the Victoria line to London King's Cross station. As my train was leaving King's Cross at about 8am, I had just under an ... read more

Friday night I went to the Campus Bar with some friends to catch some local rock bands. It turns out that the headliners, Hungover Stuntmen, are rather renown in this section of the UK, particularly because three of the four members are graduates from the university. All the bands were pretty great, especially the second act, Little Comets. They sounded a lot like a British version of Vampire Weekend, but more danceable and musically interesting. Saturday we took a trip to the historic city of York. There was some sort of food festival going on so of course we hit that up for all the free food. There was a German salami stand with dozens of kinds of salami, all of which were delicious, and the smoked salmon from the fish tent was some of the ... read more

Sept. 20, Saturday, Castle Howard and York - splendid weather Bkfst kind of marginal - did have fried eggs available (whites overcooked, and yolk kind of okay - not as greasy as some have been) and the same kind of bacon that's not like American or Canadian bacon - it was not as salty as some has been. No pastries out, and fruit marginal. At least we had gotten to sleep in til 7:15 or 30 or so. Left at 9 for Castle Howard and it took twice as long to get there as it should have - the driver didn't seem to know where he was supposed to go to get the coach into the property, but the “house” didn't open till 11, so we were okay, and we were given a reasonable amount of ... read more

It took longer to get to York than what it was supposed to due to flooding in various places along the railway, but we made it! York is beautiful, a majority of the city wall built in the 13th century is still standing, as are a majority of the 13th century buildings. The biggest and most ornate was York Minster, one one the greatest cathedrals in the world. We went to the Evensong service at 4 and enjoyed the voices of the boys and mens choir echoing through the great hall. Clifford's tower is what remains of York Castle on the same site that William the Conqueror's original fortress stood. After the Minster we went through the York Garden Museum which holds the Ruins of St Mary's Abbey and St. Leonard's Hospital, as well as St. ... read more
