The next day mom and I got up and headed to the train station. We caught a train to Dover to see the Cliffs of Dover. We really didn’t plan much or know what was in the city, so we were just winging it. We explored the city a bit and found a local Italian restaurant that ended up being really delicious. After lunch, mom and I embarked on our hike. The cliffs of Dover are just large cliffs that have chalk rock on the outside, making them white. You can hike along the edge of the cliff for two miles until you reach a lighthouse. I love lighthouses so I really wanted to hike to it, even though it was closed that day. The hike turned out to be really nice, and the weather was ... read more

April 29, 2012 – Margate Here we are in Margate, visiting with my cousin Susan Marsh, her husband Eric and son Stephen. We have been so humbled and grateful to Susan, Eric and Stephen for taking the time to meet us in Margate, and so kindly show us the town. We saw the home that my Grandfather lived in, and the RAF base where he worked – we think prior to 1920. We visited the Tate Gallery, where a Turner exhibition is on display, and also Rodin's sculpture “The Kiss” (our bit of culture!) and museums at the airfield. But so far, the most astonishing thing we've seen is the Shell Grotto. The Shell Grotto is situated on Shell Grotto Hill, Margate (a small back street in the middle of town) – and is absolutely amazing. ... read more

When we arrived there was a slight drizzle, then once we began setting up camp the rain got heavier. But once the cover is off and the tent is unfolded, your pretty much done, as everything else was under cover or could be setup from inside the tent. When you arrive at the circuit, there's a road to your left just before the main gate which takes you round to the camping field. The information e-mail warned there would be no facilities, which i assumed meant there were no showers or shops, but in fact this meant the only thing in the field, were water taps and bins, being a bloke, this was not too much of an inconvenience. The next morning there was a fair bit of moisture in the air from the night of ... read more

Geo: 51.3347, 1.41787After a great trip to Malta we headed back to Ramsgate. We did not get back into Ramsgate until 11 at night. We headed straight for Ken and Debbie's home. We arrived to a warm reception and an amazing late night feast. It was so good to see or friends and catch up with them. Since we moved from Ramsgate Ken and Debbie got a English Bull Dog named Hendrix. He is the most lovable little guy ever. We went to Thai Orchid restaurant the next night to get our favorite lamb mango. It tasted even better than I remembered. Sunday night Debbie made Sunday roast dinner and boy was it a treat. Monday morning I got up early and headed for the train station to get into London early. I went to Brew ... read more

Geo: 51.3347, 1.41787After our long journey we were thrilled to be back in Ramsgate. Ruth made us a yummy dinner and we were off to the Monty for a pint. Eddie, Graham and Chris joined and made it feel like we never left. The morning came in a hurry and I was off to The Ramsgate Brewery to brew the next in the line of the Conspiracy brews. Left Coast Conspiracy. An American hopped pale ale. After the brew was transferred to the FV and the copper was scrubbed clean, the brew day was complete and we were off for the Ramsgate pub crawl with the gang. It was a mix of our old favorites and one new pub. The beer was flowing and tasting great. It was so great to be back in the old ... read more

Well this time last year we were only talking about a trip to Morocco, now its a reality and the start line is getting closer!! Managed to pick up a set of roof bars for the truck last weekend so the Kanga roof tent could finally be fitted, now I've just got to wait for a chance to take it out for a dry run. Yesterday DK managed to pick himself up a canopy for his L200 so his list of mod's are almost complete as he already had roof bars for his tent, but it wasn't until this weekend we were able to fit them on the trucks. One thing we found on my setup was that because my truck is lifted, the ladder goes vertical, so I'm now on the look out for ... read more

This weekend we stayed in town to try and save some of our pennies. Here's what we did: Thursday night: It's the season for the Italian/Latin Carnivale, where people dress up in beautiful costumes and party just before Lent begins (40 days before Easter). So in honour of the tradition, Mike's school (CTLS) held a Carnivale party. We decided to stray a bit from the traditional elegant masks and wear masks of famous people. Mike was where's Waldo (or in the UK, Where's Wally? or in French, Ou est Charlie?), and Elysia dressed as a female Mr. Bean. She really wanted to wear the face of the queen, but Mike thought that was tacky (although later at the party we found people dressed as the entire royal family, so we weren't the only famous people there). ... read more

So I'm not all that impressed with Dover, the city anyway. The cliffs and the castle were great, but everything else not so much. My day started off good. I left Canterbury, took a short train ride to Dover, and had breakfast at one of the little cafes in the main market area. Then I went to the castle. It was amazing! It was massive, with numerous buildings spread out over the top of the white cliffs. You could see it from just about anywhere in town. The first thing I did was a tour of the wartime tunnels. The first level I toured was the middle one, originally built in the late 1700's. The tour mainly focused on the role it played in WWII, especially the evacuation of Dunkirk. It managed communications and monitored ships ... read more
