This past weekend, I went to Canterbury with Karen and one of her friends from school, Lora. None of had ever been, so we were all looking forward to the trip. They took the bus from Oxford on Saturday morning to come to my place. I was very thankful since I had returned from Romania the day before and didn't feel like getting up really early. We then headed out and had a nice drive. The traffic wasn't too bad. This was an interesting experience for me since I had not done any research before leaving. The girls planned everything, including booking the hotel. For those who have traveled with me before, you will know that this is a bizarre occurrence. I usually research, look at maps, etc. before going ANYWHERE! But I think they did ... read more

Today was our day trip to Leeds Castle, White Cliffs of Dover, and Canterbury Cathedral. After breakfast we walked to Victoria Coach Station to catch our tour bus (Evans’ Tours). The bus left at 9am and we headed first to Leeds Castle, driving through parts of London we hadn’t seen yet (including Elephant and Castle, birthplace of Charlie Chaplin). Our tour guide, Debbie, was BRILLIANT. So funny and interesting…this was the first tour that I wasn’t dosing off within the first 15 minutes on the road. On the way to Leeds Castle we passed through Greenwich and the Prime Meridian, where East meets West and time is set. We arrived at Leeds Castle at about 10:30am and had about an hour and a half to tour the castle and grounds (there is an aviary, gardens, and ... read more

Before meeting up with Judy again, I headed down to Canterbury to stay with one of Alan's bestest friends. I was very nervous about it, thinking; What if we don't get on? What if he doesn't approve of me? I needn't have worried. Matthew turned out to be one of those rare people who I immediately feel comfortable with. We spent three days in good company, good food, wine around the fire at night, and good conversation that just kept flowing. I also got to hear him play his famous saz - beautiful. He lives on a Pinetum in the woods near the University of Kent. On Saturday we put in a solid day of work clearing brambles and coppicing chestnut trees. On Sunday we went for a walk around the area, then I hung around ... read more

Today we made our way from Spain to England. We arrived at the airport to find that our flight had been cancelled by AirComet, but that they had not provided us with seats on another flight. Fortunately, we were able to come to an arrangement which allowed us to leave at our scheduled time. We arrived at Gatwick and picked up our hire car to drive to Canterbury. Despite having a sat nav we circled the airport a number of times to try and find the right way to Canterbury. For some reason, the sat nav kept giving us a bum steer. Once at Canterbury, we headed for the old town to see the 11th century Cathedral. The pictures don’t really do its magnificence justice. The Cathedral’s simplicity is in stark contrast to those in Spain. ... read more

Canterbury & Dover - May 15th, 2009 Because we had unlimited access to a car for free, for our next day trip we decided to head out to the fabled town of Canterbury. Located about 55 miles southeast from Sidcup, it took us only one hour to drive on the A20. Arriving there, the first thing one see's is the main center tower of the famous cathedral, soaring 297 feet into the air, much higher than any of the surrounding buildings. I have been to many of the famous cathedrals in Europe, and this one knock's Paris's Notre Dame off the number two spot of most amazing ones i've seen (second only to Gaudi's Sagrada Familia in Barcelona). The cathedral is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. It is one of ... read more

So, this is it. The last few hours of UK-land. Everything is now packed (probably way too much!). Off to London in a couple of hours for some proper food before the plane ride, and two months of rice and noodles...that's not such a bad thing though. Least it means no more roasts. Off to the airport after that, due to fly out to Bangkok at 10.15pm, and arrive around 3.15pm. Will update this a bit more when i'm there and got actual adventures/experiences/horror stories to write about. Love and miss you all already xxx... read more
