Geo: 51.2773, 1.08052We started off today as passengers in an above ground vehicle: a cab. We would call it a van, but would later be corrected that it was a people mover. Vans here are large trucks. We made this choice because of the tube strike. It turned out to be a wise choice, much easier than dragging our luggage on a 61 minute underground maze of a journey. Despite the heavy traffic, we made it to London City Airport in a little less than an hour. Along the way, we got to see London's “lovely” East End as well as some residential neighborhoods. We picked up our own people carrier and headed out for Canterbury guided by Siri. She was pretty accurate with the many roundabouts. After going below the Thames though Black Wall Tunnel, we ... read more

Woken in the night by the wind outside and sure enough when we got up in the morning, the lovely early summer weather we’ve enjoyed so far had vanished to be replaced by very cloudy skies and an icy wind. Not pleased, had quite enough of freezing wind-chill throughout May and had hoped for better things now we are into June and much further south. Back to cold weather gear as Bob got the scooter out of the Tandy garage and I rode on the back, into Canterbury, not in my usual scooter gear of suntop and shorts but jeans and fleece topped with waterproof. Brrrr. Bob found a handy free scooter parking spot just outside the city walls and we parked and walked in. This is a obviously a very popular city visit spot for ... read more

TravelMat.... well they asked for a 'nickname' for this blog, and I thought it was a good play-on-words (my name is Matt if any stranger is reading this).. until I realized it makes no sense. Unless you actually travel with a mat.. then it works. I, however, brought no mat with me to England. So, after that little preamble, I'll start off by telling of my adventures.. or lack thereof. Well actually, just a little more preambling to give this blog some good ol' context. I left the cold, dead city of Winnipeg to work/live abroad in the southeast of England for a year. I am volunteering at an organization called L'arche, which has care-homes around the world for mentally disabled persons (that may not be the most politically correct definition, but I'm trying here). Also, ... read more

This weekend, I got to go to Canterbury to see all of the North Central folks who are studying there and celebrate my former roommate, Chris', 21st birthday. After taking the overnight bus from Glasgow, I arrived in London early Friday morning. Since it was a bit cold and rainy and I had done a lot of the tourist attractions in London when I visited in September, I decided to check out some of the museums. I started at the Museum of Natural History, which was incredibly huge. I spent more than four and a half hours there, and I felt as though I had just scraped the surface of the collections that they boasted. It was cool that it was clearly a working museum; you could tell that continuing to pursue research was one of ... read more

Originally we had planned to return home straight from London however we were enjoying ourselves so much that we decided to extend the holiday and drive a few miles further into the garden of England Kent. A county full of architecturally interesting oast houses, hop farms and blossom in the spring. The weather today though was somewhat colder and there were no flowers out anywhere. Just bronze leaves falling into piles on the ground. We drove Suzy down narrow lanes until we found ourselves at the picturesque village of Ightham. Our route was going to take us to the National Trust property of Ightham Mote. We had checked opening times and it seemed the Mote had closed for a few days after summer opening but had now re-opened for the winter season. What we hadnt realised ... read more

The first stop on my tour of south-east England is Canterbury, home of one of the grandest cathedrals in England. It was where I headed first and it was everything it was built up to be. It was stunning, with amazing architecture and stained glass windows. It wasn't crowded, so I got a very unhindered view of it. I can only imagine what it was like during its heyday. Next I walked around the streets, eventually making my way to the Norman castle. It wasn't much, just four walls with a hollow inside, but when you think about how much effort and time went into building you get a whole new appreciation for it. A building like this took lifetimes to build. I met Amy there and then we walked down High Street, looking at the ... read more

As today was my only day in Canterbury I had to fit as much as possible in today. My first stop was at Canterbury Tales. Occupying the former parish church of St. Margaret is a re-creation of medieval life. You get an audio guide and follow along on a pilgrimage to the shrine of Thomas Becket. As you go through the different scenes from the town, to the woods to the Cathedral you hear different tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. My favorite tale was The Pardoner’s Tale, about three young men who are looking for Death. They are in an ale-house and ask an old man where Death is. The old man sends them towards a tree in the distance. Once there they find a large pile of gold. The decide to stand guard over the gold ... read more

This morning I got up early and went for a walk along the wall of York, before getting on the train to Canterbury. Most of the rest of the day was spent traveling and a little bit spent getting lost. There are no direct trains from York to Canterbury (or if there are I couldn’t find it). This meant that I had to change in London. I was actually quite fortunate because the two train stations (Kings Cross and St Pancras) were across the street from each other. St Pancras is a large multi level international train station. I didn’t get lost, so much as it took me a while to figure out exactly where to catch my train from. I did however get on the right train and made my way to Canterbury West. I ... read more
