Mark has been working at one of the office buildings in Canary Wharf since June 2018. He has been telling me that there are numerous designers’ shops around Canary Wharf; is made me curious – so I decided to visit Canary Wharf when he works. I decided to visit Canary Wharf on 30 December 2019 when he would come back to work after Christmas holiday. He advised me to take Jubilee Line rather than DLR as the Jubilee Like runs quicker than the DLR. I arrived at Canary Wharf of Jubilee Line just after 11.30. I was interested in surroundings around Canary Wharf station, as well as station buildings; took several photos of skyscrapers. Having heard that his office was alight South Colonnade Exit by DLR Line, I walked for the destination via shopping mall in ... read more

Our last train ride which will end where we started, in London, ENGLAND. Once again the villages look idyllic, but approaching the border, there are walls and barbwire to prevent people from illegally crossing. The train enters the chunnel, and darkness ensues. On existing, the bright sunshine is a welcoming beacon into London. Have to say it is great to hear English again, and to get exactly what you order and expect in a restaurant. London is a happening place since the NATO Summit meetings are taking place over the next two days. While outside Buckingham Palace, a police officer stops a man on a bicycle, and physically redirects him. There are metal barriers for miles. A helicopter lands close to the Palace, but do not know who is inside. Wonderful to see all the Nato ... read more

After a 7 1/2 hour flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on another lovely Dreamliner, we have arrived in London. I was able to sleep very soundly for six hours on the plane and the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge here in London has the convenience of showers for their guests along with lovely food and comfortable seating where you can look out at the planes through the morning fog. So I am now rejuvenated and ready for another 24 hours of travel. We take off for Montreal in 4 hours.... read more

Outside St. Pancras station on a dark November early evening, the four of us and our luggage joined the taxi rank. We had just spent the day on the train down to London from Scotland. I could tangibly feel the atmosphere change from the glorious Caledonian open air we had been enjoying to the claustrophobic miasma of the capital city. We said goodbye to Simon and then Mom, Uncle Walt and I sped off through central London in our taxi. Dinner was now way late, so after a brief stop at Walt’s flat we tiredly trudged to a café around the corner. The dinner crowd was already seated, so we were forced to accept a table in the front entrance. A short while later an obnoxiously loud group of prospective diners piled in and a woman ... read more

With Christmas almost upon us, it’s time to get into the festive spirit, and what better way, this coming month or so, than by going to see the Christmas lights that are being switched on all over the country? In the capital, there are plenty of opportunities to see the celebratory switch-on, and London is a wonderful festival option if you live somewhere smaller outside of it. Even those who live hundreds of miles away can easily get into the city, particularly with high-speed trains, and enjoy a day in the city before the big event itself. I really can suggest this place. I visited it last year and absolutely loved it. img=https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/P918AEYSoWIBDnHwKTvBdvwOsdyaVk1jgr9J_XbD68iQreEYlGZWgOxGcsSWX1B30dvzf-H9OPlLPxl9xxqKiin1HDzSmjJACdwlEhe-6UfYJf2KR6kQ4wIcGWpMbqXLHFcBTVo Beautiful Covent Garden (photo: url=https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Fil... read more

My mom had not left the country since 2008. In fact, she hadn’t so much as left the state of New York since 2015. This was because my dad, God rest his soul, had reached a point of severe immobility by that year. It had gotten to the point where Mom needed to hire home health aides to come help him simply get up in the morning and get to bed at night. It was a lot for my mom to handle on her own, so I did what any dutiful son would have done. I moved back home from Texas to help out in any way I could. But still long trips and journeys for them were completely out of the question. However this year, one peaceful summer morning, my dad passed on and departed ... read more

The ‘pock, pock’, of Wimbledon is like the ‘ping, ping’ of a submarine film; a unique soundtrack from my childhood. I got into tennis in the late 1960s, the era of John Newcombe, Rod Laver, and Billie Jean King. It was always good, and things got better in the 1970s with Martina Navratilova, and Jimmy Connors until, for me, the first superstar; Bjorn Borg. Between him and Abba, Sweden ruled the world. Naturally, I hated Borg because young women found him attractive and I wanted them to fancy me. I burned with jealousy as they screamed through his Wimbledon matches. Okay, he was champion several times but, as an apprentice telephone engineer in 1976, I felt I had the upper hand. He’s only a few years older than me and I view our lives as being ... read more

Saturday morning dawned with a blue, cloudless sky and the promise of a warm, sunny day. We had booked online to visit the Houses of Parliament so set off from our hotel at 9am. We stopped for coffee at our local Costa and then it was onto theTube and four stops and one change later we were in Westminster. As we alighted we could see that there were many people heading in the same direction. Big Ben is swathed in scaffolding for renovation but the clock face is still visible. We stopped to admire and get a photo of the distinctive Churchill statue and then walked along to find the Cromwell Gardens Entrance. As it was only just after 10am and our tickets were for 11am we strolled past and entered the lovely gardens along the ... read more

22 September 2019, Sunday Day 21 on Thames Path from Greenwich to the Thames Barrier near Woolwich. 37th day of travel. 6 miles from Greenwich to the Barrier. Ah, you might have wondered why the blog entries have bogged down timewise? Well, we have had one foot in England while wrapping our brains trying to understand the complexities and perplexities of countries we have since traveled in the Middle East. To see-saw back and forth over such different areas has been mentally taxing. One day , in Morocco, I thought it might help to have my head wrapped up, so it was done in a weaving shop--sadly, it resulted in little insight into our introductions to Jordan, Dubai, Morocco and Israel whilst trying to finish up Merry Old England. Today we complete the 184 river miles ... read more
