This past weekend I visited my best friend Kiran in London! It's remarkable to see a good friend in a foreign place -- the first hug made me feel home :) And her suitmate Masha let me have some of her dinner just because I was eying it hungrily. What a sweetheart! The first night I had to sneak into Kiran's room because she, being Kiran, did not turn in the guest request form. All of her new friends helped me creep past the security guard by locating themselves strategically and distracting him! Unfortunately, at the moment of truth, as I sprinted through the treacherous hallway toward the dorm room of salvation, I tripped and fell over and dropped my suitcase. Perhaps even more embarrassingly, I abandoned it and left it for her friend Jill to ... read more

So now we're settling down into life in London, and Mike has survived his first week back at school. It reminds us that we're not really on vacation, and that there is a real purpose as to why we're here.... but we still have the weekends to travel. Mike usually has Fridays and Monday mornings, so we'll have more time to travel, but this weekend he had to go to class on Friday so we stayed local for the weekend. This is fine because there's just so much to see here, that there's never a dull moment! On Saturday we stuck around London, and spent much of the day in Hyde Park. Because we are missing the accessibility of our beloved Bixi bikes (for those who don't know, they're the bike share program that recently started ... read more

Wow. Welcome to London, indeed! We landed in Heathrow around noon, picked up our Oyster cards and packed all of our luggage to the tube station for the final stretch of our journey home. Of course, saying it like this makes it sound so simple... but we had a lot of luggage! So, it wasn't that simple at all! We loaded all of our stuff onto the Picadilly Line train, and sat down for the hour or so journey into town. The train slowly filled up, and by the time we got into London proper, the train was so packed that there was no way we could get our stuff off the train! We were very worried that we wouldn't be able to get our bags through the crowd, but luckily, by the time we got ... read more

Need to keep this updated more! So many things have happened since this last Tuesday... Wednesday was my first full day of classes and they are interesting to say the least. My anthropology class is all about music and how it's changed over time in London from jazz to punk to popular music and all that falls in between so perfect class for me. Thanks goodness though he gave us tons of venues to go to that are cheap to just sit and listen to music. Jazz is at the root of a lot of music around here so there are plenty of jazz clubs to go to and listen to music. Which will definitely be on my list of things to do. Then my history class on the other hand is a bit tedious it ... read more

Yesterday, last drinks at the colonies - Thanks everybody for your nice words, the flower, the presents and Shayne for all your precious advice! Turns out Jet Lag is some serious stuff. Jumping from Hawaii to London really confuses the body. Miles and I woke up ready for life this morning at 5:30 am. You would think that maybe something would be available to do but here people start everything a little bit later. We ended up taking the tube to Camden Town. A few things that we noticed… 1. If it is before 9 am, bring a paper to read on the Tube, everybody is doing it. 2. Mixed Drinks come in the can, yes Dad you’re favorite Gin and Tonic is a close as a can open away. 3. Nothing really opens and starts jumping till like 1030/11 4. Entertainment can be found by walking through the super market Brits can say just about anything and it can ... read more

So we showed up in London and Paul remembered that he has a cousin that lives here. He sent him a message just after we got into the city, and by noon we had plans to go over to his flat for dinner. We wandered around during the day on Sunday, checked out Camden Market which is just up the street from our hostel... a pretty interesting place. While we were at it, we found a shop called Cyberdog... the decor in the store was quite elaborate. Unfortunately they didn't allow photos. Maybe I can find some on teh internets. As we were walking past some stalls, Paul also recognized some artwork that one of the artists at his office had sent out as something interesting to look at that he'd found on the internet earlier ... read more

I'm quite rubbish at updating my blogs regularly as I'm sure you've worked out and have just had the shocking revelation that I have been neglecting London itself. Here I am living in this fantastic city and yet my focus is only on the trips out of it!. London has so much to offer and as I explore more of it I'll hopefully be able to provide some insights into great things to do which don't involve flashing lots of cash, but will require a physical commitment. My friend Blue and I have made a pact to explore more of London on a regular basis and I thought I should share our first jaunt of 2011 which was a wander along the Regent Canal from Little Venice to Camden Markets. We were joined by my other ... read more

Geo: 51.5406, -0.143337I knew the day would come, it has been put off until today. It was my last chance to go shopping in Camden at the markets. I was hoping to buy some clothes for summer in South Africa. I loved walking through the market, so much character here. I've never known any other market place like it. It can be a lot to take in, so much to see. For lunch I tried a new place that I had not seen before. It was on the corner of the main road and the canal- also vegetarian! There was so many nice looking foods to choice from- why is this always the way? Discovering new places just as I'm about to leave for good :(After lunch and feeling much more energetic , I continued to ... read more

We arrived at Heathrow after an uneventful flight, greeted by Leanne & Brad who came to pick us up. Personal service door to door. How nice! We knew that this weekend would be the only days that they didn't have to work, so we took advantage of the time and good weather to go for a walk and do a maternity photo shoot of the twins-expecting couple in Regents Park. We were very pleased with the result - some of the best ones are on Kayla's Facebook page. Leanne's baby bump is getting quite big already, and getting bigger by the day, with three more months yet to go. We settled quite nicely into a daily routine for the rest of the week. On Monday, we celebrated Richard's birthday by attending a BBC Proms concert at ... read more
