Another decent walk today - I actually merged two walks from Castleton together (to make FrankenWalk!) Our trip was almost sabotaged by a collapsed dry stone wall partially blocking the track, but we cleared the stones out of the way then called our landlord to see if they could contact the farmer to make sure the cattle in the field didn't escape through the broken wall. We set off from Castleton heading up Cave Dale passing Peveril Castle. The rain the previous days made a strwam running down Cave Dale so we had to watch where we put our feet! From the top of Cave Dale we headed across some pastures then north along a farm track to Windy Knoll. From here we did the steep climb up Mam Tor then followed the ridge north-east. We ... read more

Today we did a longer walk from Ladybower Reservoir over Rowlee Pasture to Alport Castles. The walk started with a climb through the woods, including Lockerbrook Coppice along footpaths and forestry tracks. There was a laid stone track across the bogs of Rowlee Pasture, although a couple of stones had topped ot sunk and requierd jumping over. The rain started at this point obscuring the lovely views along the valley. From Alport Castles the path dropped down into Alport Dale. Crossing the River Ashop we skirted Blackley Hey then returned across the river and climbed over a shoulder passing below Pasture Tor and Bellhag Tor before dropping back down through the forest to Ladybower Reservoir. We head tea & chocolate sitting by the reservoir before heading back to the cottage to dry off yet again.... read more

Week 40 of the year . It hardly seems like five minutes since week 1 - January . Cold miserable days . We had just returned from a fantastic Christmas in Normandy . We had plans . Lots of them . They did not include lockdowns, shops rationing food, face masks and everything that Covid chucked at us . All we thought was it was 2020 and we had the whole year ahead of us before Brexit . A year on free travel . And what goes and happens ? . Covid . February - a quick trip up North which did not go altogether as planned . March - who would have expected it or saw it coming ? Not me . I had my heads firmly in the travelling clouds . No-one , nothing ... read more

As it was wet we spent the morning exploring Treak Cliff Cavern - one of the caves where they still mine Blue John stone. Due to covid they couldn't do the usual cave tours so instead we downloaded an app & were given our own starting time (at 10 min intervals from other people) to go on our own self-led tour. It worked very well and we had a lovely time poking around in our own time. On the way out of the cave we found the cave spiders by the door although they proved rather difficult to photograph. There was a lovely view from the exit but then the heavens opened again to we ran inti the vesotor centre to look around the museum. Ww thought of doing a short walk form the cottage, but ... read more

Thursday - I wondered where the week was going to . The hours are like water that run down a plug hole . You watch as they fritter away and ask yourself where are they going to ? And more importantly what have I done today to make the day worthwhile? Are you like me when you say something or think of something that it leads you onto something else or somewhere else . What have I done today to make me feel proud ? Heather Small and M People - Little did I know it but the song would be going round and round my head all day I lie in bed again waiting for dawn . We wake early in the Spring and Summer . What happens to our body clocks this time of ... read more

A rather last minute holiday to get away for a few nights. Our friends kindly agreed to come & cat sit at out house whilst we were away so Monday started with a socially distant run through of Max's routine & other useful things around the house then we went to dop the ferrets off for their own holiday at Three Shires! Having bid farewell to all our furred babies we headed north we skirting the south edge of Sheffield we stopped off at Upper Burbage Bridge for our first walk on the moors. We headed south along Fiddler's Elbow to Higger Tor then on to Burbage Bridge. We got slightly sidetracked scrambling over rocks & took a slightly convoluted route but ended up in the right place. After a short walk along the A6187 we ... read more

What time is it ? It is dark and gloomy and I have little idea what time it is . The sun has not risen and there is no finger of light punching its way through the curtains . It could be anytime between 4 am and 6 am. I lean over to try to read the time on the alarm clock . That is shrouded in darkness . . The luminous fingers of my watch are slowly moving around the dial but they are so weak that without my glasses I cannot work out what time they tell. It is Monday . I know that . I also know it is day 183 and the start of another Covid week - week 27. I should not be lying here screwing my eyes up trying to ... read more

Gabby the motorhome is parked up at home and has had a much needed spruce up. She has been washed and all the mud that covered her has been removed . She looks clean and ready to go. Ready to go but nowhere to go to. The two week holiday has passed by in the blink of an eye and yes we did get away. But sadly it was not the holiday we had planned thanks to Boris and his ideas about quaranteen and travelling against foreign office advice . Gabbys carpets have come out and been hoovered . Her fridge emptied . Clothes , washed , dried and returned to her cupboards . I wonder where she will be end up next? A holiday at Christmas perhaps ? Will we get a window of opportunity ... read more

"Let your mind wander in the pure and simple " The words of Chuang Tzu rang in my ears as I walked . Autumn is coming with Winter just around the corner . It seems a little strange to say winter is coming when the sun is beaming down. It is 25 degrees at least and feels much warmer. The sun has been like a large red ball in the sky. The wildfires of the USA seem to have created some kind of phenomenon where the smoke has been picked up by the jet stream . The jet stream has carried it across the Atlantic and coloured up our September sun. But nevertheless Autumn is lurking there quietly but there nevertheless . There are two more weeks to September and then another three before the clocks ... read more

It is always a lovely feeling to wake up and be greeted by a gentle thought . Thich Nhat Hanh had come up trumps this morning with his thought for the day . It was about feelings . I felt like staying in bed. Lying there , turning over and going back to sleep . I did not feel like wandering round the shop walking the aisles looking at food I did not fancy to eat . I was still mortified . France cancelled . Another holiday gone the same way as the last . Another date booked . Anticipation hopeful that third time lucky would apply knowing full well it the holiday would be cancelled again . I didnt turn over though - I ripped off the thought from yesterday and read . A gentle ... read more
