Friday 24 July 2015 Waking to grey skies in Wales seems to be a common occurrence this summer. We feel sorry for those holidaymakers who have been looking forward to a week at the beach to spend it in a little caravan or hotel room. The news this morning is full of items about today being the busiest day of the year for travel. More flights, more cars on the road, more rain. We packed up, farewelled our host and hit the road for Gloucester. Polly was set for a day at the beach so we took a self-guided drive along the Welsh coast. We stopped several times to check out the beaches and facilities. There was no one around, which was a surprise as there was no rain and no sun. The beaches appear to ... read more

Going against the flow away from the Three Queens We happened to be back on the Wirral on the last Bank Holiday weekend of May which was during the scheduled events for celebrating the 175th anniversary of the Cunard company . Part of these celebrations were the ‘Three Queens’ (Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria) Cunard ships in formation on the River Mersey for the first time in maritime history. Although we knew it would be an amazing sight, we made a calculated decision as we knew thousands of people were making their way to Liverpool and the Wirral to see this event and going against the flow, we went to the Roman city of Chester for the day. As we were driving along the M53 motorway, it confirmed our decision had been right ... read more

This weekend I'm going to undertake a '2 peaks in 2 days' challenge that I have set myself in the hopes to raise some money towards my travel costs. My Dad and I are going to walk Snowdon (the highest peak in Wales - 1085m) on Friday then drive 181.7 miles to Scafell pike (the highest peak in England - 978 m) which we will walk on the Saturday. Hopefully the weather will stay nice and not make it too hard for us. I'm looking forward to this challenge as I've never actually walked either of them before! I'm sure it will be very fun but also very tiring, I feel sorry for my dad as not only does he have to do the walks but he has to do the driving, at least I can ... read more

Really looking forward to starting my trip now, I've received details about my host family and they sound so lovely and interesting. Also there home looks beautiful! It looks as though there will be some other volunteers staying there during my time there so I won't be alone (helps me feel a bit less nervous). Anyway, in terms of preparation I had better get a move on, time is rushing by and there are so many things I need to do. Luckily my mum is well organised so is keeping me on track (well trying to anyway). Its all becoming so real now and its only a few weeks away! We're feeling very excited tonight so we are having an interpretation of jamaican jerk chicken with rice and peas (quickly becoming one of my favourite foods). ... read more

Having previously sailed across the Black Sea and been lucky enough to visit the site of the 1945 Yalta Conference and seen where the files were kept in Odessa, when we finally received notice that our cruise was no longer calling at these ports, Roisin and I took it in our stride and were looking forward to the replacement destinations. Hopefully the rescheduling would take us to somewhere new and equally exciting… …Burgas and Volos: Well, they were certainly places we hadn't been before. As for exciting, let's leave it there for now. There is so much to experience before we get to these new destinations; some places we have been to (more than once) and some we are not as familiar with so, as normal, several weeks before we set off, the internet took a ... read more

The flight from Darwin was delayed by 4 hours and there is not a lot to do in Darwin airport. The flight was straight forward however our baggage was taken off at Munich and left there! So we're off a week tomorrow. We have a lovely 30 hour journey to get there and in typical Ellie fashion she has bought so many pointless things to get her through this! Sami is spending her time searching for Lion and Tiger cub photos and nearly crying in the process. We're staying on a private game reserve between Port Elizabeth and Grahamstown on the eastern cape of South Africa. Here's the link if any of you want to see it: www.kwantu.co.za We have no idea what to expect but have both said riding an Elephant is a must!... read more

So, it's 7.00am on 3rd June and it's just dawned on me I won't see a bed until about 10pm on 4th June. Going to be a long day. Lying in bed at my parents convinced I've forgotten something... and in all likelihood I have forgotten something. Passport and boarding passes will get me to Kota Kinabalu, and reassuring myself as such, will reduce the paranoia i'm going through. I've never done anything like this before and am ridiculously excited/ f'ing terrified. Never been to any part of Asia, never been to the jungle and never done much camping/ living outside. Got a feeling I'm in for a rude awakening. Today's part of the adventure takes me to the Dr's for my final shot, manchester airport, Doha, Singapore, and finally Kota Kinabalu. As long as I ... read more

Travel date April 30th. Writing date May 18 th Today was a 'transfer day' which translates to mean a lot of hours on a bus. Even though I had experienced several gloomy/ rainy/ cool to downright cold days, today was gloriously sunny. We were headed back to England. The bus followed the northern coast of Wales so glimpses of the Irish Sea were hinted at from time to time. Lunch stop was in the medieval city of Chester, England. Chester, although a large city of over 328,000, has a very sweet and walkable city center designed to encourage tourism. Entering the city on one of the 4 main roads that date back to Roman times ( about 79 A.D.) I was delighted to see that it was a walled city. It retains the reputation of being ... read more
