"Are we there yet?" The sad voice in the back of the car shouted . No Sion we are not. We have only just left home. We have a drive of over two and a half hours to go, a trip to the hairdressers and then we will be there. It's a dismal day . The heating has come on again this morning suggesting that Summer is almost over and Autumn is well on its way. We drive a few hundred yards down the road - "Are we there yet?" - No have a pistachio and look out of the window . Count sheep . It is going to be a long drive . To distract we talk about our upcoming holiday . We go through the list of things to do. Have I been to ... read more

Day 11: Manchester to Nantwich. Woke up early (too common), with just me in the B & B, and a young Scot, upstairs, who had started a new job here and was awaiting an apartment. I could hear the rain before I peeked through the blinds. Weather check done, I decided I would be cycling on anyway, as the weather report hinted at the sun poking out later in the day. After a quick breakfast, I loaded the bike, and then I proceeded with my Manchester exit. This proved more difficult than it should have been. Again, rain splattered GPS, rain splattered glasses, and busy, noisy, wet traffic. Something on my GPS setup wasn't right as the routing arrows looked like tangled spagetti, and the UK streets rarely seem to finish in the direction they start ... read more

Woolly says – A twenty minute train ride away from Wrexham is the historic city of Deva, founded as a "castrum" or Roman fort in the reign of the Emperor Vespasian in 79 AD, it became one of the main army camps in Roman Britain. In 689 King Ethelred of Mercia founded the Minster Church of West Mercia, which later became the cities first cathedral. Although the Normans did their best to bring carnage to the place many of the buildings have survived and it has one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain. So much to see and do, I had a snack to pass the time. My small friend could hardly contain his excitement and even a deep frown from the man opposite him as he bounced higher and higher on his seat ... read more

Woolly says – I’d been up for hours, I’d checked the weather forecast, given myself a good brush down and found a couple of stray pistachio’s that I had stored behind my ears and had my autograph book at the ready, the women were still nowhere to be seen. I’m not sure where he thought he was going at 6am but having settled him in front of his favourite TV show I managed another couple of hours snoozing. Woolly says – having chuckled my way through two old episodes of The Secret Life of the Zoo I was ready to meet all the stars of the show and their keepers. Based at Chester Zoo the series follows the births, deaths and efforts in conservation that the zoo is making and with the added bonus that they ... read more

Suzy the motorhome still has not moved. I wonder if she will start when we eventually fire her up. She finally has some hardcore in front of her wheels but not enough for her to get off her driveway. Her new gate is up and slowly but surely we head towards getting her off the drive. Next job to build a ramp. and then her next stop will be new tyres and her habitation check . January is finally blowing out and we are around 88 days from our holidays. The weather seems stuck between misty days, rainy days and frost. The Gulf Stream is holding the weather down and it just won't move . We have had snow . A slight sprinkling on the Pennines and the Cat and Fiddle and those pretty leaf like ... read more

I arrived in Skerries, south of Drogheda, on Saturday afternoon and the place was heaving with bikers at the end of their annual rally. The town was on a north-facing promontory with the harbour on the west side and the east-facing sandy strand curving southwards. The sun was shining, there were several camper vans parked in free parking areas, and it looked to be a good spot for a Saturday night. I think I've found my spiritual home. Live music bars, an independent supermarket, sea views on three sides of the town and a hill on the fourth, and everyone is friendly. Mind you, that does seem to be an Irish trait. People smile as they’re passing and I'm frequently caught out when people wave and I haven't waved back. in the UK they only wave ... read more

The Grande Depart is coming ever closer. We have two more weekends, two more Saturdays and two more Sundays. Three and a half days at work before we leave. As we drive back from France at the end of our last holiday we hear ourselves vainly discussing the motorhomes heading in the opposite direction to us. We drive towards the Chunnel and Calais. They drive away from it. We wonder where they are going to as we head north and homewards. The butterflies are flying round getting stronger by the minute as we wonder when our vignettes will arrive. Will they arrive in time? We need to take Suzy for diesel and a top up of LPG before we leave . Hair needs cutting and that was todays job. A trip over to North Wales to ... read more

When I started the RAB I set myself three challenges: finish, don’t get off and push and try to complete the whole ride at an average speed of 15 mph, a perfectly reasonable average as I had been higher than this on all of my training rides. However, due to the terrain experienced in the first three days my overall average for the ride was only 13.2mph and I had to admit to myself that there was no way I was going to make up enough speed over the remaining six days to get that average up. Day 4 was also the flattest day, so I set off early just after 7:00 determined to make it a recovery day before we returned to climbing on the following days. This was also the first really cold day. ... read more
