2 years ago Roisin and I were lucky enough to cruise from Genoa in Italy to Abu Dhabi in the Arabian Gulf via the Suez Canal. From pirates to dish-dashers, the adventure was certainly a once in a lifetime experience. However, during a visit to some port or other, Roisin must have approached one of those 'rub its belly and you'll return to this place' statues. Whilst I wasn't looking she had a ‘go' Roisin must have rubbed the statue up the wrong way!! I don't mean in a provoking anger sort of way but rubbed the statue anti-clockwise!! Although, not being the superstitious type it obviously worked for we ARE returning to the lands of Frankincense, Ferrari world and feckin' taxi drivers!! However, not in the footsteps of our last trip but this time we're ... read more

It all started quite innocently one Saturday evening 5 months ago. We had made ourselves comfortable on the sofa in front of the TV. The DVD was titled 'Gulag; a 1985 cold war thriller about a sportsman turned journalist who was sent to cover the athletics at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. He is framed and forced to admit spying for the US. Half way through the movie, Roisin turned to me and said, "I wouldn't mind going there." “Where?” I asked, “the dark, dank interior of a KGB interrogation cell? Or perhaps a barbaric camp in the wilds of Siberia? I don't think MSC sail there at the moment…although give it a few more years!!!” Things seemed to snowball after that. We checked our holiday plans for 2014 and agreed we had a free window ... read more

Geo: 53.1997, -2.87541Well after a night of partying till late, again we were up early to have our English breakfast and also enjoyed being waited on, then we went walking again into the town. Lorraine's family were heading back to Barnsley so we decided that we would do our own thing so they could spend time together. We thought we would catch a taxi but after checking out how much it was going to cost,we decided to ask the bus driver how much the fare was,and today it was a special day for the Bus Company, it was their Birthday so all fares were £1 each so we were lucky, and we went out to Cheshire Oaks Outlet Centre for more shopping while Clint and Melanie went to the Marine Aquarium. We caught up for lunch ... read more

Geo: 53.1998, -2.87566We joined up together for breakfast where we we so warmly welcomed by the owners, we were waited on, felt like we had our own butler! We then set off leaving the 3 girls doing their own thing but they did head in to town first, while we walked to the stairs to start walking the wall that surrounds part of Chester. We started at the main clock and headed down towards the River Dee, and the hopped off there to have a walk around by the river, The sun was out, although you could still feel the cold air but it was just so perfect. We got a phone call from Lorraine's sister to say they had arrived in Chester so we then headed back to the clock bridge. We all met up and ... read more

We went to Chester. We first walked around the part of town surrounded by a wall. The streets had no cars in them, they only had pedestrian walkways. We stopped in a few shops, and went into a museum of ancients things. There were weapons that were all the way from ancient times to just before guns. There were figurines made from rock and shields made from Rhino hide. We left the museum and carried on to a cathedral. It was a really pretty place, we walked around there for almost two hours. There is more room inside than it looks like out, because it goes underground. The under ground dates back to the tenth century. It was really interesting because there we still fragments of paintings that were made hundreds of years ago. On the ... read more

Day 4 of our life on the road. The homelessness continues and we find ourselves thinking that it will go on forever. Singing Wherever I lay my hat is becoming monotonous. The weather is poor with torrential rain obscuring the Clywydian Hills. The site is virtually empty. The weekenders left on Sunday night or Monday morning leaving us on our own down the bottom end of the site. Our electricity went off causing a little excitement and we had to wait until the farmer turned up to find the fault in the field and put it right. The rest of our day was spent in Asda shopping, visiting Flintshire Caravans to buy more toilet paper and blue stuff for the cassette. How exciting is that! But still a job that needs doing. Our highlights so far ... read more

We left Dublin in the morning and went to Wales on a ferry. Then grabbed the train from Holly Head to "Manchester United Football Ground Railway Station". We were going Glasgow so we got off at Warrington, then to Chester were we stayed the night. In the morning we walked around the town of Chester and saw the oldest part where the wall goes around the town. There were facts along the path on what it looked like, the life style of the Victorian times and the uses of the wall and it's fortifications. We walked by the water and 2 swans 2 ugly ducklings and a bunch of ducks followed us as we walked the rivers edge. There is a strong Roman influence in the town. While we were eating lunch a group of children ... read more

12 locks, 361 in total. We had a lovely run down the Bosley Flight – sunshine, great views and pleasant boaters, including a couple that we'd been up the Hatton Flight with a few weeks ago now. We decided to moor at the bottom as it was so nice and have some lunch. With hindsight we might have missed the couple of stormy showers this afternoon had we continued without a break. This afternoon we experienced a major incident, blocking the canal and 3 other boats for about 30 minutes. As we approached a bridge, where the canal was still wide but would shortly narrow to boat width, there was a large chunk of reeds floating in the middle, with no room either side to squeeze through with impunity. The reed clump was too big to ... read more

0 locks, 349 in total. The Macclesfield is a beautifully scenic canal. Thomas Telford designed it to be as fast a route as possible and an alternative way to Manchester, using extensive cut and fill techniques. Much of the canal is built on embankments which have been landscaped so well that they look a natural part of the surrounding area in most places. There are some wooded cuttings too and all the locks have been grouped together at Bosley. We've spent much of the day looking down on houses, trees and farm animals and gazing into the distance at some wonderful scenery but, churlish as this may sound, the water level is generally quite low, even after the rain of the last 2 days, and progress has been long and slow even for a narrowboat – ... read more

0 locks, 349 in total. Well didn't it rain last night? The canal level rose about 8” - many of the moored boats we passed were lying at an angle because their mooring lines were now too tight. We set off when the overnight rain stopped, fully expecting to get very wet quite soon but the sun came out, we took off layers of clothing and we had the treat of very clear views after all the rain. First stop was a swing bridge – my turn to do the honours but I couldn't shift it at all. I double-checked that the safety lock was undone and then saw the problem – the rain had washed loads of silt and larger stones down the footpath, into the crack between bridge and the steel piece on shore ... read more
