The weekend finally came! Beth and I stayed in town while everyone else went to London (to get "like, totally wasted.") We started our day by sleeping in, and then going into town and stopping in a little cafe for breakfast. (Fruit, turkish pastries and tea) Then, we toured King's College (wowza... see pictures!) and Jesus College (An old nunnery. We like to say that we merely followed Hamlet's advice to Ophelia. "GET THEE TO A NUNNERY!!" Har har.) They were amazingly beautiful. Breathtaking. Awesome. Magnificent. I've run out of adjectives, but needless to say, you don't see architecture like that in the states. (unfortunate/funny in hindsight side-note, at the end of our tour of King's College, I was checking to see how much space I had left on my memory card, and I erased ... read more

Well well... what has happened since the last update? Still in England. Still loving it. Beth and I made our daily trip to the market place and I bought a brie, tomato and chive bagette. Holy crap, it was fantastic. Beth, Neen, Olympia (fun girl from Manhatten, NY) and I went and saw Hamlet in the King's College Garden. It was fantastic! (The actor playing Hamlet was certainly easy on the eyes...) Neen brought Chiabatta bread, cheese, strawberries, fudge, and wine, and we all sat on a blanket and ate, drank, and enjoyed the show. It was incredible. A bit chilly, but really cool. Tomorrow, I get to sleep in for the first time since I got here. (Will I be able to when I have opportunity? I'm hoping I can, but I know the Gods ... read more

Yum. It really is better here. Neen, Beth and I went to the campus pub last night. We asked the bartender about the special, and it was Budvas (or something like that), which he said was the true, Czech-Republic version of the "piss" we call Budweiser in the US. I had a bottle, and it really was smoother and tastier. Wow. My first beer in England. Dad would be so proud. Bethany and I have been going into town everyday. Its been wonderful. We eat heathily, and walk at least a mile a day, if not more. I swear, I was shaving my legs this morning, and I found muscles in my calves that I didn't know EXISTED. In fact, it's very possible that they didn't exist before all of this walking. I'm going to be ... read more

Hello all! It's been a busy day so far. Up at 7:15, breakfast at 8:00, class at 9:30, plenary lecture at 10:30, and class again at 11:45. Beth went to take a nap after class, so I went to The Buttery and got the equivalent of a Tuna sub. With cucumbers on it. Yum. Then I wandered the gardens a bit, listening to my Ipod. The smell of the gardens is incredible. I've never smelled flowers so fragrant, I've never seen any so colorful. Yesterday afternoon Beth and I went into town to the Market (big indoor/outdoor mall of sorts), where we bougt a crepe and some boxes of tea. There are bikes EVRYWHERE. It's incredible! And most of the time, the bikes are whizzing by faster than the cars! There was a street band preforming, ... read more

So, I made it to England. The plane ride was dileriously long, boring and full of turbulance. I was pretty depressed and jetlagged yesterday, but today has been much better. I guess 48 hours without sleep effects me badly. We got to Cambridge yesterday around 11:00am (5am Topeka Time) and classes started today. On the bus ride from London to Cambridge, it was all little country cottages and farms. Cambridge is beautiful. Stone buildings, brick streets, vines... And the Cambridge University Campus is nothing less than breath taking. It looks like a medeval castle. My room is small but cozy. My classes have been incredible so far. Thank god I've been raised around dry wit, because my first period tutor is hilarious. As I said when I e-mailed Mom and Tim earlier, a quote I enjoyed ... read more

I've had a pretty tumultous couple of weeks, with my Grandfather falling ill and passing away. Its so hard being so far away from your family and friends at times like that, but fortunately I have a great network over here and everyone has been so supportive. It was also really sad having to say farewell to Renee and Sutto last week. Nic, Smiley and I all went out to the airport too see them off, and as expected tears were freely flowing. They're off to South America, then home to Melbourne to have a bub! It's very exciting, but also a bit wierd for me, she's one of my best friends, and one of my first friends to have a baby. Anyway. Simon and I decided to get out of London for a weekend and ... read more

Hi Guys, We have been having a fantastic time. Picked up the Hire Car from Paddington (Volkswagen Sharan 7 seater) - Go Mum!!! Nothing like naming a car after your mum!!! As there is 5 of us, we had some trouble getting a car that was going to be big enough for all of us, plus suit cases. Trekked off to Cambridge and made our marks on the roads in the Sharan. The two and a half hour drive was very plesant and she handled very well on the road. When we arrived into Cambridge, we found a nice little B&B to stay in for the two nights that we were there. After arriving we made our way down to the canals and went for a guided tour around on a Punt!! WOW, what a fantastic ... read more

We travelled through England on the day that their team played its first World Cup match. There were flags flying, the pubs were full and not much traffic around! Our destination was the university city of Cambridge to stay with friends. They showed us around the city, we had a typical English lunch in a pub and went punting on the Cam River (as one does in Cambridge). We were treated to a BBQ (enough to make you homesick!) and sat in their back garden watching squirrels chase each other through the trees. The weather was warm enough for shorts and T-shirts. On Monday we explored the city on foot and then settled into an English pub to watch Australia defeat Japan in the World Cup. There were two other Aussies from Queensland there also (small ... read more

So Suzy and I arrived at her place in Cambridge last night. It looked pristine after Gav's place in Birmingham! We just hung out and relaxed for a while, surfed the net, watched Angel (the take off on Buffy the Vampire Slayer), and ate Chicken Pot Pies. Then Suzy and I got a few drinks down at the gay pub on the corner. I keep meeting these British men that want to practice their Italian. They have horrible Italian accents, I have to try to keep from laughing. But I met a nice gay man in is 40s who decided to try is Italian on me. It was nice to practice again. Today Suzy marked a route for me on her roommate's fold-out map and I went exploring through town. Cambridge is very beautiful; it has ... read more
