Hello Peeps, After hearing about this from a very clever friend we thought we would sign up to it for when we embark on our exciting journey to the Alps where I shall attempt to learn to ski, make polite conversation and cook 3-course meals for 20 every night-arghhh! I finally have another holiday to look forward to! I know some of you think that all I do is go on holiday but that is simply not true. Anyway after much umming and ahhing we have decided to go to Turkey. We thought it would be somewhere new and interesting to explore. We have signed up to do a small group trip which starts and ends in Istanbul. It takes in a range of places including Cappadocia and Ephesus. I don't know that much about Turkey but what I have read about looks pretty cool. I have always liked the look of Cappadocia and the amazing scenery. As we were so late in deciding where to go it means that we don't have long to wait before we pack our rucksacks and go. :-)... read more

Hey, So Cherie and I decided to head out of the big smoke and go take in some of the rolling countryside.. So we headed to Kings Cross station and got completely overwhelmed by the departures lounge/area.. The photos will show you guys why.. That huge board was just in a little suburban station.. Well it was a really nice train ride down to Cambridge with lots of countryside and cows and stuff like that.. From Cambridge we got another train into Ely where Dot and Ferrel live.. When we got off the train we discovered that the weather had turned and it was absolutley freezing(and we hadn't brought any warm clothes with us!!) So we used that as an excuse and hit the shops.. we got some real bargains in ELY!!! Ely was really lovely ... read more

I started off our last day with my first "English Breakfast" (vegetarian). It was so filling. And yummy. After that, it was off to Buckingham Palace, where there was something going on within the gates. Maybe the changing of the guard? I'm not sure. I couldn't see through all of the people. We got to see the palace though. Next, we went to the National gallery, home to original works by Da Vinci, Van Gogh and Monet. It gave me goosebumps to be in the same room with such famous paintings. Inches away. Oh, and the museum was HUGE. It took several hours to get through. Wonderful, breathtaking works. Then we were off the Piccadilly Circus to do some shopping. Beth and I found some cheap luggage to bring gifts home in (only 5 pounds. Sweeeet.) ... read more

Transcribed from my journal yet again: 7-22-06 We got up early and walked to a cute little French pastry shop. I had something akin to a croissant with yummy fruit inside. Delicious. Then it was off to the Tower of London. It was HUGE. It's strange to think that I was walking where Henry the VIII, Anne Boleyne, even Queen Elizabeth I walked. We saw the crown jewels, the "Bloody Tower", the torture display, and the spot where the beheadings took place (those beheaded there include Anne Boleyn.) Oh! And we watched the ravens. They are BIG boys! I guess they keep them fat to keep them from leaving. Legend has it that if the ravens leave, the tower will fall. Next was Westminster Abby (Big, beautiful, breathtaking), Big Ben (Really big. We walked out of ... read more

Suz came in to my room at 6.30am telling me to get up - we both felt like crap after only 3 hours sleep. Apparently, Suz’s alarm went off and she thought it was Monday, got up and got dressed for work - haha! We chucked a few things in a bag and jumped in the car. We tried to get out of London, it took us 40 minutes to get over the River Thames (which should have taken 10!) We found ourselves driving around random suburbs with building that were falling down, etc. Suz just happened to randomly look back and saw a sign for the M11! We did a quick U-turn and we were finally on our way. Still feeling rather average. We got to Cambridge nice an early, about 8am, parked the car ... read more

With no laptop on my travels, I wrote in my journal. Here it is, transcribed in all of it's glory: 7-21-06 I heard London calling, minded the gap, and looked left. I'm here. London is amazing! It's huge, bustling, and full of every race, nationality and style. The day went as such: We left Selwyn right after breakfast, and caught a cab to the rail station. (Upon arriving there, I realized I needed my passport to use my BritRail pass, and had to ride a taxi back to Selwyn to grab it. Meh.) The train was neat. I alternated reading Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintainance and watching English farmland whoosh by. So we made it to London, bought a day pass for the underground (best transportation ever! So fast!) and found our hotel. (Which, ... read more

Last night I met up with Ling in Cambridge, a city comprised of 31 colleges. A real, live castle houses each college! Seriously, can you imagine going to school in a castle built in 1400? Each castle has its own character-- famous alumni (Trinity-Prince William), gorgeous gardens (Pembroke), sinfully beautiful chapels (King's). As you walk up the main street, you nearly always have a castle on either your left or right side. After class with Ling (I've attended Cambridge now!) and dinner in the dining hall (unlike Berkeley dining halls, truly a "hall" with a four-story high ceiling and adorned walls and ceiling to boot), we headed off to play (read "watch") cricket. The cricket field happened to lie about 4 miles from the college, so we (Ling, me, and Ling's friend) had a good 40 ... read more

But keep in mind, air conditioning is very rare here. Ugh. Pretty relaxing day. Not too much traveling. Breakfast at 8a, class at 9a, plenary lecture at 10:30a, class at 11:45a. Took a nap and then went into town with Neen and Beth. Ate a tuna salad Baguette at a little cafe, and just sat and chatted. It was nice (the cafe had AC!) After "lunch" (it was 4:00p) we wandered around the market, but everything closes at 5:30p there on weekdays. Meh. Found an awesomely cute, awesomely expensive sundress. 35 pounds. Needless to say, I didn't buy it. We went to the evening lecture at 8:00p, and after that, it was off to a local pub (The Granta) for my first full pint of English beer. (I had IPA, which was on tap. Neen suggested ... read more
