It has been 1 and a half months since I lived in Slough, and for the past few weekends I either stayed in Slough or went to London. This weekend, I decided to go to somewhere new. In the end I decided to go to Reading because 2 of my friends happened to be going there. Reading is the largest town in Berkshire and according to my colleagues it is good for shopping. My 2 friends (Ying Yi & Wen Seen) and I took a train from Slough to Reading. From Reading Station, we walked around the historical part of the town. We stopped at the Town Hall & Museum to pick up some maps and brochures, had a nice stroll in Forbury Gardens, explored the ruins of Reading Abbey (one of the most important abbeys ... read more

On Saturday Ange and I made the short train trip out to Reading in western England to watch big Pete compete in the kayaking championships on Sunday. Was a lovely rainy and cold weekend completeing the picture for us. Although I think Pete and Erin found it rather balmy compared to good old Aberdeen. On the big day we were entertained watching some of the best kayak paddlers in the country, including a few world champions. And then there was Pete. The races were rather interesting to watch - Sunday was a day of endurance races with some of them competeing in the tough 26km paddle and others (including Pete) competeing in the 13km run. To make things interesting - and I'm not sure why they do it, they made them all do a portage every ... read more

As most of you will know, I'm about to head off on another adventure (on Tue 22nd August), this time spending a year touring around Central and South America (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Belize, Mexico, the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Venezuela) and then New Zealand, Australia and Canada. So I'm setting up this blog which will hopefully keep everyone informed, entertained, and maybe insanely jealous, along the way. I'll try and add some pics too. Every time I update this site, you'll get an e-mail with a link to the new page, so it's pretty easy to use. You can write messages below - it will be great to hear from you when I'm away. Even if you think you don't have any exciting news, it's nice to keep in ... read more

Today is the last day I'll be at the conference - the conference programme actually goes until Friday, but there's not too much on that interests me tomorrow so we're taking a trip down to Southampton for the day instead. Here's a few photos of the University and of the area nearby where we're staying. ... read more

Arrived in Reading on Saturday, where we are settled for the week while Rebecca attends a conference at the University of Reading. We're staying at the Elmhurst Hotel, a little guest house which is a bit out of the way from the city centre, but only 5-10 minutes walk from the university. We spent most of Sunday walking around the town centre, looking at the shops, and sights such as the Reading Museum and the Abbey Ruins. ... read more

Well, things are finally coming together. I think we are both really ready to go, its just the last minute stuff left to do. The house looks like a mess with packing boxes all over but by the end of next week everything will be in storage and we'll be living off takeaways and kindness! Spent last night at the village festival wine tasting.......yes, last night. Thunder, lightning, torrential rain and we were in a marquee under a big tree. England at its finest! It was great to catch up with people and grab their emails so we can keep in touch. Though enough alcohol was drunk that I'm not sure how well I copied down details. There's a parade on Saturday and a fete so I'll be down there taking photos to show people what ... read more

Well I've been unemployed for three and a half weeks now and in that time I've acquired: Walking boots that are so chunky they make even my legs look spindly. Jabs for diseases I didn't know existed (and now I wish I didnt) Gadgets that might come in useful..... sometime. Lots of pretty visas. And a lot less money in our bank accounts. Russ and I are off on our odyssey on July 14th. Before that time we want to get round as many of our friends and relations as possible and to that end I went up to my home town of Blackpool last week to see my sister. No Blackpool jokes, I've heard 'em all. Can reccomend the hotel I stayed in: The Granville. Bed AND breakfast for £15. Perfectly clean and friendly and ... read more
