It's here. The first day of the ride in earnest. Waking up early had its benefits today. We were able to pack up and get out by just after 7am. Our luck continued when they let us take our bikes on a peak hour train towards London. We were training it to the Thames (about 20kms) and then riding along the Thames as much as possible towards Oxford without much chance of reaching there tonight. That's about when our luck changed - So, What Could Possibly Go Wrong (WCPGW)? Just as we started to ride, I pulled over to adjust my camera with Jeff just behind me. By the time I was finished he was nowhere to be seen. I thought he gone on so followed, but he had gone around a corner behind me to ... read more

Lingfield – Reading (Aug 3 – Aug 11) The trip from Airbnb’s Liverpool to Lingfield was not a long travel day as we left the Liverpool train station at 12:47 and arrived at train station at Lingfield by 4:41 PM. The trip did entail 2 train trips and a subway trip in between the two. Fortunately, the train and subway stations almost blend together making for a pretty seamless transfer. Harriet very kindly picked us up at the Lingfield train station even though we could have walked, it definitely made it easier with the luggage we had brought with us (way too much!) It is always nice to have a chance to meet the people that we are going to house and cat sit for. They have had cat sitters before and it showed as they ... read more

Reading is a picture post card town. A nice cathedral ruins on a little hill with a backdrop of a meandering Thames and Kennet rivers, embracing (sometimes too tightly during floods). That's Reading, 45 mins by Great Western Train from London Paddington to Reading main station. It was my first holiday during the infamous Coronavirus alias Covid-19 pandemic of 2020 which initiated a lockdown in United Kingdom in March 2020. I simply had to capture the English summer with one day trip to make it memorable as government was discouraging public to travel for leisure. Train was almost empty. I took my bicycle into the train at Hayes and Harlington station and got down at Reading. As per the new rules of social distancing, only one household per lift or me and my cycle in the ... read more

12 September 2019, Thursday Pangbourne to Reading, day 11 of Thames Path, day 27 of travel. -The Elephant Hotel had an old India decor and charm with a husband/wife team comprising a Romanian bar tender and Jamaican waiter. We sat at the classy table and chairs for dinner. Chairs are made of large rough old boards and have 6 feet high backs. Several photos are included of the hotel including the knit elephant adorning our bed. The table was used for the fruit and cereal buffet the next morning. -We have a delicious breakfast at The Elephant. By the time the specially ordered porridge arrives we have satiated ourselves with freshly made raspberry yoghurt, fresh fruit, and nuts and finished with lovely chocolate croissants. -Fueled for the day we set off for Reading--a techie, business park, ... read more

1 September 2019, Sunday Day 16 of travel. Meeting Jo Finestead, Norma Wiebe and Karen at Heathrow. Train to Kemble. Ibis Hotel in Reading was comfortable on 13th floor. The hotel is really funky and clientele punk rock. After breakfast Hotel I walked to the train station to take the Railair bus to Heathrow. The 0945 bus left me, my backpack and 2 bags at Heathrow terminal 3 but Not my Tilley's Hat! Ugh. Norma arrived at 0615 on United flight from ORD in terminal 2, enjoying the arrivals lounge before meeting us at terminal 3 arrivals. Karen and Jo were 2 hours late on their American flight landing about 1050. We wheeled our bags to train station and bought tickets to Kemble. It was just before this I realized I had left my hat. But ... read more

I decided to book a couple of nights in Reading because we hadn't been there before and it wasn't too far from Heathrow from where we were to fly to Copenhagen. Well I can't really say that I very impressed with what we saw of the town but no doubt the rain didn't help the enjoyment of the place. We did only have one full day there, and for at least half of the day the rain was pelting down. But for us the best thing about Reading was the Reading Musem and the ruins of Reading Abbey, both of which we explored. Because of its Royal patronage, the abbey was one of the pilgrimage centres of medieval England and one of its richest and most important religious buildings. The museum had a great Story of ... read more

Geo: 51.455, -0.969088Breakfast at the Black Horse Inn was interesting, no option for cereal but the bacon sandwich (not toasted, on white bread) was popular! We decided to go to the much acclaimed Warwick Castle which opened at 10 today instead of the usual 9am. While we were waiting, we found out that 'thousands' of cubs and scouts were going to be there today. Given the noise that the first 20 were making, we decided to head to the hallowed city of Oxford.Despite setting the Satnav to 'country lane' mode, we were soon hurtling down the M? at 70mph so we diverted to Banbury, of 'ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross' fame. We did see cock horses, the cross and the fine lady. Another pretty town, with a canal though the middle so we watched ... read more

In an hour, we will be packing the taxi and heading off for the airport! Hopefully, all of our stuff will fit and none of us will need to walk to the airport! The cases have been packed and re-packed. All the weights have been checked and now we are filling the time! Some of us are doing the things we all do before a holiday! Have you got the passports? Who has the money? Did we pack ...? Is .. easy to get to! Nick: So, after 18 months or so of planning, the day we finally packed up our things and left our beloved little home had finally arrived. We had already had a week off work to sort the of house out and stow away ours things before handing over the keys to our new tenant Andy, and all that was left today was to tie up some loose ends, finish the cleaning and pack our bags, but the adventure wasn't due to start in earnest just yet - our flights to Rio were not until the following day. Instead, we had the chance to have one more evening with our friends (and family) Simon and Hayley, who were kindly putting us up for the last night before we left. A very enjoyable evening was had by all, ... read more

My bags are just about packed, term has finished, I've had an amazing leaving do with wonderful people, the rest of my things are in storage (my poor Granddad probably has more of my belongings at his house than his own at the moment-thanks Granddad), I have a pile of paperwork stamped, signed and organised and am ready to set off tomorrow to spend the next year in Vietnam. Should probably be nervous but am just incredibly excited!... read more
