"If Heaven isn't all it's cracked up to be, send me back to Gimmelwald!" -Local saying When I slipped out from under my down duvet to get a drink last night, I went to the window and drew back the curtains. There were the looming mountains, with the faintest lightening of the dark sky over their heads; above them shone a single star. Realizing yesterday's heavy clouds had cleared, I went back to bed with a smile on my face. This morning I opened the bathroom window and peered outside. At the top of a steep slope of wildflowers were Gimmelwald's postcard-perfect chalets, and beyond those the impossibly beautiful alps, crowned with the first real blue sky we've seen in days. I could hear birds exalting and the tinkle of cowbells on the hills, as ... read more

We got to Milan Centrale station with about 45 minutes to kill before our train to Spiez, Switzerland rolled away, so we bought paninis and sat on the cool concrete floors of the station. When 10:30am came around, we boarded the train, and five minutes later we were headed towards Switzerland. It was a very scenic train ride throughout the Italian portion and the Swiss portion. In Italy, the train went along Lake Cuomo and of course as we approached Switzerland, the Italian Alps were before us and then in an instant they became the Swiss Alps. When we crossed the border into Switzerland, the train stopped at the next town, the train crew got off and a new crew came on and checked our passports and Eurail Passes. We were also faced with a new ... read more

No bags (no bikes shoes!) plus rain puts Andrew and Ray on train to Lausanne (after visit to Geneva airport to advise of their departure for Lausanne). Cell phone useful to call airport several times throughout the day for recorded message that Ray's bags have not arrived. Dinner at elegant old high ceiling oil paintings train station restaurant in Lausanne. Beef tongue, local cold meats and Dole du Valais (Swiss wine). A and R decide if bags not there by following day to travel by train to Zurich to spend a few days shopping for replacement bike bags etc. On return to bike hostel Ray receives their first call on cell phone. Expecting news from British Airways, gets British mother-in-law instead. (Ray hides any theortetical disappointment). They discuss the apartment reservation made by Ray and ... read more

Right, this time i really should stop drinking... tuesday i went to a goodbye party for someone leaving Wengen to go travelling and a bottle and a half of wine later I had to catch the last train down to INterlaken. One of the other reps was over for the night so of course we had to go out. Cue a bottle of gin, vodka and some beer and a pack of cards and feeling merry we headed to the usual bar. Felt ok as did Portia then all of a sudden she was hammered and had to be helped out of the bar. Ok so not great but next day, we discovered she's lost her key. Now the one thing they said to us was, don't lost the key it costs Sfr. 500 i.e. ... read more

Eh oui!

After 24 l-o-o-o-o-o-n-g hours of traveling, I finally arrived at our hotel in Geneva. And the hotel was so nice! It was the Hotel Auteuil (how this is said in French I've no idea, but I'm guessing "Hotel Ahhhh-tel"?) Anyway, super modern and sleek, hard wood floors in our room, big windows, A/C (!!!), etc. After an awesome shower and change of clothes, Marty came back from his conference and we went exploring. In the pouring rain. :) We met up with two of his friends from the conference at a beer hall/restaurant (Br......, can't quite remember the name...) where the guys decided to split a 3 liter tower of beer. I had my own much yummier beer, something limey and refreshing brewed at the restaurant, and promptly passed out in the hotel after dinner ... read more

On plane, Andrew watches the in flight movie 'Happy Feet' (foreshadowing end of trip visit to southern tip of South Africa) while Ray makes up for his self imposed no spirits rule in place for the last week of hectic preparations by enjoying a few very small bottles of Shiraz - from Sonoma on the first leg to London and from the Rhone on the second leg to Geneva. After movie over, Ray describes to Andrew his satisfaction in how much they accomplished and had organized and went on about details of possible improvements. Andrew kept his headphones on, pretending to listen, but actually not, which Ray was oblivious to. Ray questions Jason, cabin steward, on second leg of flight, about meaning of term he uses to describe food on offer as 'sandwich style offering ... read more

It was sunny when we left Paris today, but the clouds came up again and when we got off at Laussane the thunder was booming overhead. Rain followed shortly after, and all the streets of Bern were glazed thickly with water. It feels a little too much like home, and my tan is far too slow in coming. We're staying at a friend's house in Bern; tonight his mom (who speaks only French) cooked us a traditional Swiss meal, which involved melting slices of a special kind of cheese (in an appliance I've never seen before) and pouring it over potatoes. Très bien! We may get snow when we journey into the little alpine village of Gimmewald on Saturday, which would be a fun adventure. It's nice to see mountains and pines and endless green ... read more

What can I say? - we love Switzerland! Switzerland has fantastic long distance cycle trails, and they don’t all involve climbing the alps. You don’t even need a map as all the routes are way-marked and take you to amazing places, into the forest, up by waterfalls, nature reserves, lakes with reed beds or enticing clear water, mountain views, quintessential farm chalets, crop fields, needle top spire churches and of course, cows with bells! Our average daily distance has gone significantly down, partly due to more challenging terrain and unsealed roads, partly due to there being so many nice places to stop and admire the scenery, and there really seems no need to hurry. Having crossed so easily into Switzerland, we did get a bit of a shock on the Brunig pass at 1008m between Interlaken ... read more
