Hi Guys. Well, we made it on the big Europe Summer thing, and all that. It was awesome and it was great to finally get to see some of the countries we had been wondering about for years. There were a few places that we would love to go back to, and some places where one visit was enough, but it was all worthwhile and we made it back safely last night. Vaughan is already off to work again today so I feel a bit sorry for him, so I’ll try working hard too by getting on with this travel blog, and you can all see what we have been up to - it’s pretty hard work as well. Hope you have all been safe and well, and we look forward to catching up with you ... read more

Once a year people gather in Zürich to go crazy in the streets with heart-thumping electronic music and a scene of rather anarchic nature. A good release perhaps for the the people in this otherwise very rule restricted place. Anyway, I was there, but I will let the photos tell the story...... read more

Howdy ho once again.. In Switzerland now..couching on our bed nibbling some bread for dinner..It's been a fairly useless day besides minor purchases we made at the infamous H&M store. The train trip from Prague to Zurich was a nightmare. We missed our connecting train by less than a minute and ended up waiting for 2 hours for a train that would take us as far as Innisbruck where we had to yet again change trains to zurich. Nevertheless we came across some breathtaking scenery on our journey - the magnificent towering Swiss Alps. Today, Zurich is celebrating its annual street festival with rave parties and mardi-gra like fashion parades. Contrary to the music we've heard in other countries, all we've been exposed to is pounding techo crap.. ok, the above was written yesterday.. today is ... read more

Joe (Host Father) had been talking about taking an old car out for a test run and offered the passenger seat to me several days before. I decided to take him up on the offer, thinking I'd see some of the Swiss country side. I knew the car was open air and when I saw it, the size surprised me. It was TINY. I could barely sit in the passenger seat without feeling I was violating marital oaths. Climbing in also required some work...I swear I've been in roller coasters with more foot space. "British car," I commented, noting the "on" switches. We (read: the garage employees) had to jumpstart the motor to get it going, then Joe and I were off. The car wheezed and groaned into action; the wheels, a bit off-kilter, caused a ... read more

My host father got a speeding ticket in NY on a visit in 1998. He sent this letter with his payment. I found it amusing... Donald Smith Justice, Loggerstown, NY Hello Donny, On 5/25/98, while spending my vacation in the United States, some bozo cop from your little town caught me speeding. I am now ready to pay the ticket. First I thought to myself that you could just as well kiss my ass, but then again you probably need the money to buy a new street light for your shitty little town and feed the homeless on your streets. Furthermore, you were not exactly very lucky. When I was caught, I was actually travelling very slow compared to the rest of my trip (I had to slow down because of the traffic). Only two minutes ... read more

For my first month of flying, I was put on standby flights only. On my first day, the standby shift started at 5am, so I went to bed in good time the night before, and attempted to get some sleep despite the nervous butterflies fluttering around in my stomach. As I drifted in and out of sleep, worried that I might sleep through the sound of the phone ringing next to my ear and miss my first flight, I was mid-dream at 5:07am when the phone actually started ringing. No time wasted. I was needed! When I answered the phone, I was told two things; one - I would be picked up in 45 minutes, and two - I was going to Zurich. Easy enough, however, after hanging up, I suddenly panicked and my mind went ... read more

*i've skipped quite a few entries; they are handwritten & i will add them later* We took Ashley to the village pediatrician today and he AMAZED me. He had an interesting method of giving vaccinations. While Ashley was babbling to her mother, the doctor hid the large needle behind his hand until Ashley looked away. Then he deftly undid one side of Ashley's Pampers, jabbed the needle into her skin (not cleaned by alcohol...is that safe?), and while she looked a bit startled for a split second, Ashley continued playing when she didn't see her mother or the Doctor register any strange occurrence. The mother suggested I try the "hard to get" approach to getting Ashley to like me. So there are similiarities between dating and childcare. Amazing. I also went to get an "introduction" to ... read more

I had no real expectations in relation to Zurich. I had no strong desire to visit the city, but did want to see some of Switzerland on my way through to Eastern Europe, and being the largest city (with a population of around 350,000 people), with a central location, it seemed like a logical destination. As it turns out, while not the most attractive of cities in itself (though I don’t want it to sound like it had nothing to offer in that way………for instance the lake on which it’s situated is certainly beautiful), it did prove a suitable base to visit other destinations in Switzerland, and to that extent it’s a shame that I didn’t have more time to explore more of the country. Zurich has it’s own charm though. The old part of the ... read more
