Today we had a private tour of Zurich, courtesy of Bryan. First stop was the botanical garden. Strangely, they were featuring an exhibit on Native American plants. Go figure. Also stopped in at a great sandwich shop for lunch. J had a pizza/quiche hybrid that was quite good. The banana cream tartlette and cherry (pie?) were awesome too. Bahnhofstrasse is the main shopping street in town, lined with upscale shops. Fun to look in the windows but definitely expensive! We climbed the tower of Grossmunster, a 16th century cathedral, for a view of the city. The sun was out so we were able to see the Alps in the distance and the suburbs along the lake. Zurich has a fantastic public transit system. Trams run all over the city at very regular intervals. You always seem ... read more

After our quick change of plans, we diverted to Zurich this evening in lieu of St. Moritz. Chizzy and Bryan were very gracious in accomodating us a day early. We met Tolsty the cat. The only picture we have of him is blurry, which should tell you something. The other pictures from this evening are my experiments with tripod and long exposure...... read more

Today we took the Glacier Express from Zermatt to....Chur. Thought I was going to say St. Moritz, didn't you? Well, we bought the GE add on to our Swiss rail pass for a hefty additional fee and our understanding was that it wouldn't require us to use 1 of our 5 rail pass days. The GE ticket we had said Zermatt to Disentis which I questioned from the start, but the Europe Rail folks said it would get us all the way to St. Moritz. When the train stopped in Disentis (about halfway along the 8.5 hour route), a new crew took over representing a different rail company. The conductor came through to check tickets again and requested our ticket to St. Moritz. We showed him what we had and he said - you guessed it ... read more

Despite the popular belief that there is no such thing as abandoned buildings in this country, I managed to find one in Zurich, my first day here. I did not attempt to go inside as it is on a busy street and attached to a couple of occupied buildings, but I did take a couple of photos. The rest of the city is... great?!? Many old buildings, with the typical old building architecture... Ok, so this is the one place that I did not really like. I don't know why, but the people were cold and the city was too clean, making the experience too... sterile.... read more

i'm in an internet cafe in zurich right now. this is quickly becoming one of my favorite cities in the world. besides the fact that everything here is so exhorbitantly expensive, it's pretty wonderful- very charming, beautiful, and clean. no wonder my mother lived here herself. today, some guy tried to greet me in mandarin. that was pretty funny. we walked around a lot, i ate a lot of candy, and spent more money than i intended to... damn credit card traps. we had a great fondue dinner and sat in some swanky cafe and my cousin told me more stories about her glamorous life. jesus christ, man. we're going to do a little more exploring in the morning, then the next day it's off to paris to stay with the famous naturelad. up to this ... read more

Anyone out there a Stephen King fan? Then you should know his piece “The Langoliers”, which also made it to the big screen. For those of you who don’t: Big airplane with destination somewhere on the US mainland. All of a sudden most of the people on the flight have vanished, with a few “lucky” ones left to their destiny. Manage to land the plane on some mysteriously abandoned airport surrounded by mountains (probably somewhere in Maine, considering it’s Stephen King…). No people, no communications, no other planes, not even any smells or sounds on the airport - completely dead. Dead, except for the langoliers coming closer and closer from the mountains. Langoliers are some flying evil creatures with big teeth. To speed up the story a little bit: the people from the plane (obviously) manage ... read more

August 27 Emy and I feel almost sad to leave our Frauenfeld home, a home that is never locked at night, where neighbors’ voices are hardly heard, where the only noises you’d hear would be the washing machine spinning or the coffee beans grinding. Or our loud Filipino voices and laughter! Moonlight, as we now call Lylah, and Papa, as we call Fredy , plus the 2 boys alternately called “sunshine” and “baby” by dear Lylah, have become our family in Switzerland. But we paid good money to join this Trafalgar tour, so Lylah helped us get our bags in her car trunk once more, and dropped us off at our Zurich hotel (Hotel Renaissance). On the way to Zurich, Lylah showed us the sights in Wintherthur…..where Fredy was born and raised , where his father ... read more

August 22 Sunday After missing out on the Cosmos’ Russian River Cruise to join the Placinos (which got fully booked one year prior to departure) , change in Trafalgar bookings for lack of time to secure all the visas, and the ordeal relating to the issuance of the Russian visas, Emy and I are finally ready for our holiday. Emy was running late but arrived at the airport with time to spare for a heavy snack of gyoza and chicken sotanghon. Our first wise decision……we were served dinner at 9pm yet on our Air France 161 flight for Paris. All of 16 hours with hardly a wink, plus another 1 ½ hr flight from Paris to Zurich. Wide awake on the plane, we hardly resisted all the meals served. We arrived in Zurich with a bloated ... read more
