... read more

I know it has been awhile and no, I am not stuck in some snow drift. Believe it or not, last night was the first we had any snow for some time. It has been way too warm for snow (upper 30's). Even now it is not a lot, but at least everything looks white for a short period of time. I was telling one of my friends about this greasy chemical (some sort of anti-freeze) they put on the roads so even when it is not raining outside, the roads are always wet so the cars and trucks are filthy! My driver washes the car every day and it does not do any good because by the time he gets back from the car wash, the car is dirty again. Not only does it get ... read more

It was another beautiful train ride through the coutryside to Zurich where I met Markus, another Swiss english student that stayed with us in NZ. We went back to his brand new flat to meet Annina his girlfriend and to eat a traditional swiss meal of potatoes and melted cheese. Well there was a little more to it than that, special grilling cheese, spices and specialist equipment; mini cheese grilling pans and a cheese grill, quite an affair and delicious. The next day Markus took me up Mount Weissenstein which had amazing views out over most of Switzerland across to the Alps. It was cold, windy and overcast but that didn't dampen our mountain trek and we did get to catch the view in between clouds before having hot chocolate at the cafe. I was still ... read more

At the Hotel Alexander Guesthouse in Zurich I was trying my key in all the doors on the 2nd floor because I forgot which was my room number. Some noisy girls that were staying there came up to me laughing and took a look at my key. I didn't ask them to, they just took it out of my hand. Then they laughed at me and pointed to the stairs. I had to go up another floor. I forgot that in Europe you have the ground floor, then the first floor, then the second floor. Their laughter echoed all the way up the stairwell as I crawled to my cozy, welcoming, respite of a room. Lights out! I woke up today in Zurich! Took some snaps of the city before getting on the train to Luzern. ... read more

Throughly excited, Suzy and I headed off today to meet Talar and tour around Europe. But, first it would take a bit of traveling to meet up in Zurich. The night train seemed to be the prefect option. Needless to say we were very ambitious of the romantic evening, on the night train, riding through the Alps. As we arrived at Vienna’s main train station, as always, we easily found our train and couchette. The numbers had been changed around a bit, by the conductor, so we decided to ask the question... are you sure were in the right place? Hmm, she assured us we’re where we’re supposed to be. The room when we had arrived in it had the standard two couches facing each other. Everything was going smooth until the conductor woman came back ... read more

While staying in Oberstaufen we headed into Switzerland to check out Zurich. We also went to the very southern german border that is right next to Austria. There is a place there called Fussen. In Fussen there is a beautiful castle called Neuschwanstein. I would recommend it for anybody in that area. These two journeys were not overly adventurefull, so I will not babble on for that long. I disd not find Zurich to be all that interesting. There is not a lot to do there and more importantly not much I could afford there. Unless you really like shopping and don't mind blowing a wad, I would skip it on my trip. Of course like any good traveler you will not take my word for it and when you find yourself in that area, I ... read more

With a six hour layover between flights in Zürich I decided to make a visit to the downtown Zürich. The city centre is only 12 mins by train from the airport, and there are trains at least every 10 mins, so getting there was a piece of cake. I spent a lot of time in Switzerland as a child, I was there almost every summer during a few years, but now I had not been there for well over 10 years (with the exception of one day in Geneva). I had almost forgotten what a beautiful place Zürich is, it is really a lovely little city (well it isn't that large). But I have to admit I did not really recognise everything, the railway station and Bahnhofstrasse I recognised straight away, but other than that... I ... read more

We are sad to say it's our last day in Switzerland. BK and CK have been such wonderful hosts to us. We have really enjoyed our time here, the places we've seen, and all of the people we have met. Two Octobers in a row we've had excellent weather in the mountains and spectacular fall foliage - incredible! Having a home away from home and friendly faces in Zurich to recharge our batteries really keeps us going. It was such a lovely afternoon that we decided to take the Dolderbahn (cogwheel train) up to the FIFA sports complex. We were too late to rent golf clubs for the driving range, but were lucky enough to arrive just in time for a ladies figure skating exhibition. I wish I could be that graceful on the ice (or ... read more
