Friday April 27, 2007 - Jacqueline, Monica, Meggie, and I flew from Vienna to Zurich, Switzerland on Friday. We were immediately greeted by friendly people, even at the customs check in. We had a 10 minute conversation with the lady that checked our passports at the airport. She didn’t really care that people were in line. She wanted to know where we were going and wanted to tell us her favorite parts of Switzerland. It was great! Then we took a train to the main train station in Zurich. There was a sand volleyball tournament going on inside of the train station. We sat and watched for awhile and then met up with another friend from our program. Monica went with him to a town 20 minutes south of Zurich. Meggie, Jacqueline, and I stayed ... read more

My friend Vanessa used to talk about all the time, about how often she goes to zurich. my friend tanya and i were fascinated and were curious to go; neither of us having been in switzerland. we were quite lucky b.c vanessa's dad works for the train system in switzerland, so we were able to get some discounted tickets to go to zurich. vanessa invited us to stay over her house in chiasso, and we would get up at like 5:00 in the morning for the 4 hour train ride to zurich. we had passed along some really beautiful things on the train, we had seen lake como, lake lugano, as well as much of the swiss countryside. in the countryside we saw beautiful plains, small towns, lakes, and the alps with snow at the very ... read more

On Saturday I met up with some of the people form work who are living in the residence. It turns out that that is more than half the department. We had pizza and a couple of drinks and then went into town. One thing I really don't like here is that people smoke everywhere. You really get used to the no smoking rules at home and it almost puts me of going out with the smoking like it is here. On Sunday I managed to make my way into Zürich to do some shopping. The train on the way there went straight to my stop in Zürich and, as I caught the same train back I assumed It would take me all the way home. Not quite right there. A while into the trip there ... read more

Hi Everyone, We have made it in one piece. We still cannot believe we are on the other side of the world - its mind boggling. Our journey started when we flew out of Brisbane on an 8 hour flight to Singapore. This flight was really very good. We had fantastic food, hot towels for our face, and great service. The flight includes ALL YOU CAN DRINK ALCOHOL! Craig certainly took advantage of that (lots of beers, white wines, bacardi rums and even Baileys)! The big disappointment was...our movie/tv screens did not work - we were the only row of three seats in the whole plane that couldnt watch movies! So boy, we had to actually talk to each other, what a drag! Anyway, it worked out Ok, we got a free pack of cards! ... read more

We thought McDonalds provided free internet, so we decided to be very unadventurous for our first Europe meal and get something familiar and easy. Unfortunately the search for free internet came up empty but at least we now had some energy thanks to the 'Cheeseburger Royale" a.k.a quarter pounder with cheese - very exotic Maccas. We spent the day exploring Zurich. When we had first arrived on the Train Zurich at first appeared to be very industrial and even somewhat unattractive- but of course all areas on trainlines all over the world tend to be this way, and we soon discovered just how ... read more

Wow, I'm actully here!! All that stressing about my visa was wasted as when I arrived at the customs desk all they did was check the photo in my passport and let me through! No questions, stamps or anything. Renate (my boss) was waiting for me and took me by train and bus to my residence in Winterthur, across the road from the hospital. Winterthur is a pretty quite little place (apart from the construction site outside my room!). I'll have a couple of days to have a proper look around before starting work on Monday. There are 2 Candian girls from the department who I met last night and were very nice. They are going to take me into Zürich tomorrow to have a look around there and do some shopping. ... read more

Over the past 6 days, we have travelled through 4 Swiss cities, through 3 language zones and have encountered some of the more memorable charcters of our journey so far. On our first leg of our travel from Verona to Lausanne, this 20-something, very 'hip/chic/wankerish' chap sat for the entire train journey sharing his very bad taste in music with us both (ipod turned up to maximum capacity and him singing along on occasion), holding ciggy in hand while desperately waiting to dash off at each possible train stop to light-up, and force-feeding us hubba-bubba type gum, with corresponding bubble blowing for the last 45 minutes of the ride. We were quite bemused to say the least. On our second leg however, quite the opposite with our faith in travel companions restored by the prescence of ... read more
