On Saturday I met up with some of the people form work who are living in the residence. It turns out that that is more than half the department. We had pizza and a couple of drinks and then went into town. One thing I really don't like here is that people smoke everywhere. You really get used to the no smoking rules at home and it almost puts me of going out with the smoking like it is here.
On Sunday I managed to make my way into Zürich to do some shopping. The train on the way there went straight to my stop in Zürich and, as I caught the same train back I assumed It would take me all the way home. Not quite right there. A while into the trip there was an announcement in German which I paid no attention as I couldn't understand it and they usually are just announcing what the next stop will be. The train stopped soon after the announcement and people got off. I didn't notice at the time no-one had got on and that everybody had got off. I was sitting there for a while listening to my

German lessons when an official looking guy comes up to me. I assumed he wanted to see my ticket so I went to get it out for him. But he wasn't interested in my ticket and starts speaking to me in German and I have no idea what he is saying. it's then that I notice that I'm the only one still on the train so I tell him I am going to Winterthur and he says no, no, that train, pointing to a train on the other side of the station and telling me to go fast. So I grab my things and rush out to get the other train but I wasn't sure which platform to go to (there were about 10 platforms and to get to them you have to go underneath the station). So I take a guess at a platform that was towards the other side of the station only to find that the train is pulling away. It's not too bad thought because another train was due in 45 mins and I have plenty of time to make sure I'm waiting on the right platform when it arrives!
Started work on Monday. It's
The biggest pedestrian mall in Europe. Easter Sunday so much quieter than usual.
quite different to how we do things back home but I will get used to it. Most people are very helpful and there are lots of english speakers which helps.
Went into Zürich with some of the people from work after work on Wednesday and Thursday. We were hoping to do some shopping on Thursday but everything closed at 5 because it was good Friday the next day so ended up having tea at the airport (was on the way home and the only place still open).
Today I went for a bit of a walk trying to find the observation tower. I didn't have a map so wrote out directions from the internet before I left. This would have been fine if all of the little tracks through the forest that looked like roads on the map had street signs but a couple of crucial ones were missing so ended up walking around in the forest for quite a while before somehow finding the tower.
