When I stepped off the plane at 4pm, it was dark as midnight and -17C (1º F). The answer: I had frequent flyer miles about to expire, and this destination was a special, low-miles rate. However, Sweden’s freezing temperatures led me to something I often overlook: visiting museums and cultural exhibitions, instead of wandering a city’s streets and hiking her nearby mountains. By far, my favorite place in Stockholm was the Vasa Museum. The Vasa is a 17th-century warship that sank in the harbor a mile into her maiden voyage, due to poor design. Because of the conditions in the harbor, the wood-eating ship worms found in most of the oceans cannot survive, and the Vasa was preserved remarkably well. My return from Turkey brought with it quite a jolt back to reality and a fair bit of culture shock - indicated by the fact that my first thought as I was flying into Bratislava was “where are all the mosques?”. But, it also implied lots of exciting arrivals and reunifications and the end of travelling alone! After a long and exhausting journey from Istanbul, which involved: a bus trip where the driver nearly made us late to the Istanbul airport because he stopped to buy a packet of cigarettes and then drove round the city in circles for ages; a flight in the early hours of the morning, meaning that no sleep was had that night; somehow managing to get from the Bratislava airport to the bus station without any Slovakian money, thanks to the ... read more

An extremely early start today, we got up at 4.30am for sunrise and the scenic sail in to Stockholm. It was pretty, but not sure it was worth the early start. It did mean, however that we were ready to jump ashore at 7.30am as soon as the ship docked and we walked into the outskirts of Stockholm. Our first destination of the day was the Vasa museum. The Vasa was an oak ship that sunk on her maiden voyage out of Stockholm harbour in 1628, but was salvaged in 1961. The ship now stands inside the museum (ship in a bottle!), 95% is original as it preserved in the clay and non-salty water of the harbour. The vessel is amazing! Ornate carvings all around, high rigging and masts and includes original canons. The museum is ... read more

I thought it was about time that I should provide my story and update as promised following my return home to the UK a few days ago. It loosely follows a chronological pattern, as it was based on the ‘diary’ I was making of my trip and updating as I travelled from one city to another, either by plane or train. I had an unforgettable time in Sweden, as much due to the people I met along the way as the sights I managed to take in during my time in the city of Stockholm and the surrounding areas I managed to take in during my short stay. I was travelling alone, and Stockholm was the first in a 3 leg spot of city hopping through Europe - followed by Milan & Florence. I arrived at ... read more

We arrived in Stockholm Saturday evening and headed to our hotel Rica Kungsgaten. We explored around the hotel and shared a calzone for dinner. We slept in Suday morning and enjoyed a large breakfast. The hotel offers: crepes, eggs, bacon, sausage, sliced meats and cheeses, cereal, fresh fruit, fresh breads, and much more. After breakfast, we walked along Gamla Stan, old town Stockholm. We stopped in front of the palace and at 1:15 watched a spectacular changing of the guards, complete with calvary, and a mounted brass band. They are not always mounted, but we were lucky! It was like marching band to the extreme. Talk about playing music and moving all while mounted on a horse. After the changing of the guards we toured the armory. As Sweden's oldest museum it contains suits of armor, ... read more

Stockholm to Malmo I managed to navigate the ticket machine at Stockholm's Central Station, found the right platform and leapt on to the train. Found seat 67 and made myself comfortable. Ahhhh a nice couple of minutes to spare before we head out. All of a sudden, I'm surrounded by a family trying to sit with me and put their luggage in the overhead compartment. Somehow I must have offended one of them as I received a stern look. Apparently I have the right seat number, on the right train, on the right track, but the WRONG wagon! Oooooooooooops - sorry about that chief! After my false start, I lugged the purple wonder down the platform, found Wagon 15 (rather than 5) and the REAL seat 67. Phew! A shrill whistle was heard and we pulled ... read more

London - Day 1 Let's just say that QANTAS and BA provide a very similar First Class experience. The only male steward in the QANTAS first class was an absolute gem. He spoiled me rotten and made me feel very, very special. I did notice that the pjs in QANTAS were just as big as those on BA, but by this stage I was enjoying the whole tucked in scenario. I arrived at Heathrow in pretty good shape, cleared customs in a jiffy and headed for the Heathrow Express...all good. Once at Paddington, I mis-remembered that wise sage Phil's advice and searched in vain for a train to take me to Kings Cross. Never mind, I guessed I'd missed the thread somewhere so bit the bullet and caught the tube instead. Only 5 stops and it ... read more

Well the trip is now over. I'm back in Dundee and procastinating over preparations for a move to Edinburgh and the start of a new job on monday. My trip back home with coach, train and plane was incredibly hitch-free. I woke up on time from my hostel in Kabelvag (hard not to with my alarm set to Fight for Your Right to Party by Beastie Boys - it gives me heart palpitations when it goes off). I didn't fall back to sleep. I ate a nice breakfast. I got the bike ready for the 5km into Svolvaer. My bike didn't get a puncture or anything on the way. I found the bus stop. The bus arrived and despite everyone skipping the queue there was plenty of room for me and my bike. The driver didn't ... read more

We have been to a Star Wars exhibition We just have to tell you about what we did yesterday. We went to see a Star Wars exhibition. We didn’t go there on our own though. Well dad was with us like usual. But we also had company with two friends namely Zakjekonijn and Joplin. Zakjekonijn and Jopin don’t speak any English but we have promised to translate what they want to say on this blog. Since we went to see Star Wars we also dressed up like Jedi Knights. We have very pretty dresses, don't we. Emma's and Jean-Claude's grandmother has made them for us. Even the dresses Zakjekonijn and Jopin wear. Emma's and Jean-Claude's grandmother is very talanted when it comes to make Jedi dresses. Now may the Force be with you all when we ... read more
