hi! we are writing from the utopian paradise that is scandinavia! well that might be a slight exaggeration, considering it hasnt really stopped raining since we landed. never the less! after leaving galway we headed down to cork, the city between two rivers. actually lots of our cities seem quite water focussed. waterlogged says emma. probably due to living in drought zone. anyway cork! we dont really know how to describe cork but we liked it. while there we visited markets, went to the gallery and had lots of walks along the rivers, enjoying the busking. isab & em made sure on the first morning to track down a pub which would let us watch the saints collingwood match (woot from isab, glare from emma), we tried to drag roz along and teach her a fine ... read more

Swedish Volleyball team - I’m not sure why, but I had this image of the women’s Swedish Volleyball team welcoming me as we stepped off the train, but instead, I had a Scandinavian summer wind chill greet me while putting down any thoughts of volleyball. Paper or Plastic, or lead weights? - My two cents on European coins, bills, and credit cards. I like the credit 1st, bills 2nd, and forget the coins. The coins in Europe are used more prevalently than their American counterparts, they’re worth more ($3, $4, and even $5), and inconveniently require money in both your wallet and the pocket. Bills are fine, but it all looks like Monopoly money and you just don’t think of it the same way, tricking you to spend like crazy. If I could really have it ... read more

At last, we've had sunshine all day today. Since arriving, we've had overcast skies and rain at some point each day. People have assured us this isn't typical weather, but I was getting suspicious...and a tad depressed, to be honest. But today was glorious. Yesterday we had the opportunity to meet with a potential Dag Mamma (sounds like dawg mama and translates to day mother). Eva is a young grandmother type who's been doing home day care (dagis - sounds like doggies) for about 20 years. Her blue Swedish home sits on a hill about a half mile from our place and she has 3 other boys in her care who are near Jorgie's age. The first thing that I noticed was her wall full of books and I, selfishly, though, "alright, someone I can borrow ... read more

I just got back from language camp just a few days ago. The camp was located in Ahus about a 4 hour train ride from my town Lidkoping. There is one other Rotary Youth Exchange student staying in my town, Justin. He is from Texas and has already graduated so this is a blow off year for him. Lucky him. ugh;) Well being in my town and going to the same language camp, we got to go together. We then met up with two other RYE students both from Canada. One girl was French Canadian so Swedish is her third language and the other is from the other side of Canada so like most of us, it is her second language to be embraced in. This was all their first train ride, my second and ... read more

After spending three weeks in the UK to get over jet-lag, do laundry, see relatives, buy a new van, buy food and pack again, we caught the Newcastle to Stavanger Ferry on 27 July. On the boat we were introduced to crazy inflated Norwegian prices with beer costing £4.50 a pint! (Hot tip- if you want to eat/drink on the ferry, take your own food and beer. Sadly ours was on the car deck!) From Stavanger we headed straight for the Fjords. Our first stop was the Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) which is probably one of the most visited sites in the whole of Norway. A distinctive 25m square slab of rock perched 600m above Lysefjord, it is undeniably spectacular, but we were not expecting the hundreds of people we passed on the path. We were glad ... read more

It's impossible to be homesick when you get to introduce your child to the sea. It was such a good day today. Jeff and the girls went to a bible camp with the pastor this afternoon, so I asked Jorgen if he'd like to walk to the sea after dinner. I was a bit concerned, as it's a bit of a walk and I'm unable to carry his robust little person. He assured me he could walk the whole way. We walked, hand in hand, to the sea. The moment we rounded the path and he saw the water was priceless...his face lit up and and he said, "is that the sea?". As I said earlier, it's not beachy sea, it's a rocky sea. We started climbing the huge rocks and Jorgen said, "are these the ... read more

Hej ! Sweden is the Scandinavia's biggest countries. Almost everybody knows what Sverige is famous for. Sweden is best explored by trains and buses through its counties. Some have even explored it along with their donkeys, as recently as this year in 2008, when a french citizen with his two donkey Nonu and Monu achieved that. Well Sweden train fares are quite expensive and mostly run in the day time. The only night one's which I have seen leave at around 11 pm in the night to border town of Norway to Stavangergatan from the Central Station, its a sleeper coach, for correct schedules check with the sj.se, the official train services. You can get around in cities with their local passes specially designed for Tourists visiting the country or if you are a student then ... read more

Here are a few observations from Week 1: 1. Grey Volvo station wagon's rule...followed closely by grey Volvo sedans. 2. You can't do a "quick load of laundry" in Sweden. 3. If groceries were this costly in the States, we wouldn't have an obesity problem. 4.My kids are much quieter living in a big house on 2 acres than in a small row house with shared walls. 5. Ikea's Swedish Meatballs are even better eaten in Sweden - with a big pile of french fries on top. 6.Foreign kids throwing tantrums sound just like American kids throwing tantrums. 7.Swedish women have better body images than we do. 8.Knowing the language is helpful before moving to a new country. 9.People, in general, are kind and helpful. 10.Webcams and Skype are great inventions. ... read more
