School is a challenge, I have learned. All my lectures, except english as a second language, are in Swedish. This is both awkward and quite a challenge. My teachers have no clue what to do with me in their class but they try their best to keep me involved in the lectures, although I can understand it is difficult. They dont know what to expect from me quite yet and they dont know what they should set as my limit of work every night. I am up for the challenge, even though I really dont have to get good grades, I translate as much as I can. I also ask questions, without being disruptive, and take all work home with me. I am assuming it will only benefit me by translating all this and actually ... read more

24 - 08 - 08 - Uppsala The train journey from Copenhagen was good; caught up with some sleep mainly, actually for the majority of it after a really late night. I jumped on the train at Copenhagen and changed at Malmo, I was quite glad to get off the train in Malmo as it was absolutely packed full with people so much so that I had a bike handle basically stuck in my stomach for the whole journey. I really enjoyed watching the Swedish countryside pass by my window; actually wishing for the train to breakdown so I could go and take a look around properly. Reached Stockholm and then caught a train up to see my friend Jen; she's also cabin crew for British Airways and had a nightstop in Stockholm, though they put ... read more

With the 1st of September drawing ever so near, I start to wonder if I have enough time to get things sorted out? You know what it’s like…. Ahh, plenty time left, I will do it tomorrow! Then as time goes by, you realise, hell, I better get my finger out of my ass and start to get stuff organised! Anyway, Linda and I are looking forward to this trip as winter is approaching Sweden, it is time to move on and head for the heat. It is strange to think that about 2 weeks ago, the coast line in Sweden was packed full of tourists and locals sucking up the sun and just loving life, shops were open, parties every night, life was good. Now the same places are like ghost towns, shops and pubs ... read more

The 15 hour adventure to Sweden went very well! Eric, Amy, and I got to see Duluth from the plane and I also got to see some Northern Lights over Greenland, it was beautiful! When we got to the train station, a student from the school picked us up and brought us to the International Office. At that point, we received our itinerary for orientation this weekend and keys to our new home. I live on campus in the Lyan building. I have my own bedroom and bathroom and a big closet, it's really nice! Unfortunately, I will be paying double for rent compared to last school year, but it is a really great place to be and I am thankful for this opportunity! I share a kitchen and living room with 6 other students, but ... read more

We have always wanted to go on a cruise, and this year we decided would be our premiere on a cruiseship. We wanted to stay in Europe for this holiday, so that we wouldn't have to take a very long flight to our destination. We settled for the Baltic Sea, which would actually start from the German city of Kiel. Our first stop was Stockholm, Sweden. We had a huge tour around the city. The bus brought us around the innercity which we found to be very alive and full of young people. Sadly we later didn't have time to come back here and do some shopping. Our first stop was at the cityhall and we had a very long and detailed tour around the building. We saw the spot on which each some of the ... read more

Did I mention Car? Yes, we rented a car this weekend through an innovative car sharing program that allows you to order a car, send a code via text message when you are ready to pick it up...it tracks your miles and when you return it, the card charges you based on the vehicle you drove and the miles you traveled. Our car for the weekend was, you guessed it, a grey Volvo station wagon.! It's a nice ride, but the German in me still prefers my Volkswagon. Maybe a little more time in Sweden will change my mind. The call of the open road and not having to wait on bus schedules made for a really fun weekend. Friday night we started slow with a trip to Ikea to make a return and eat meatballs. ... read more

... read more

After various tearful goodbyes & expert frenzied packing completed - I headed off to Lund, Sweden on August 21st. It was a perfect summer in the Okanagan, surrounded by family, friends & sunshine - making it that much harder to say goodbye. But it was time. Time get out into the big world again. Kelowna - Seattle - Copenhagen by plane Copengagen - Malmo - Lund by train Lund Central Station - Skanevagen #18 by automobile It was a sunny & windy day in Lund when I arrived, jet lagged & sweating. A wave of uncertainly as to why exactly I had come to this place washed over me while I waited at the Station for Eva to pick me & my overweight luggage. Now that a few days have passed, I am feeling more stable ... read more

The girls first days of school have gone well. We've breathed a huge sigh of relief and are hoping that the novelty of new friends who speak English doesn't wear off! They seem to be the exciting new thing in their classrooms. Signe's teacher, Jane, said that the parents she spoke to were excited to have an English speaking child in the classroom so that their own children would learn the language better. When I picked Signe up that first day, she was surrounded by girls and they were playing with animals like we had at home. Every minute or so, one of the girls would approach Jane with a word to translate so they could ask Signe questions. Jane said the kids were fascinated with Signe's drawings and that one boy said, "she has a ... read more
