Two weeks ago, I took a 17 hour train ride to Lulea, Sweden. Its a few hours from the Arctic Circle and its where Kai studies. I had a bed in the train so it wasn't as bad as it sounds because I just watched movies on my laptop and slept for a good portion of the ride. Kai's roommate Markus had two friends from Germany visiting him as well and we all rented a car to drive North for the weekend. There were many other exchange students who joined us in other rental cars. We drove a few hours North and got out of the car to get some pictures of where the Arctic Circle officially begins. The Arctic Circle is defined as the point where the sun never sets on Summer Solstice, around June ... read more

Hola! Bonjour! Thanks to Ryan Air's awesome flight prices, I traveled to Barcelona, Madrid, Toledo in Spain and Paris, France last week. I chose to visit Spain because they have great weather this time of year compared to Sweden and my close friend Jordan lives in Madrid. Paris was tacked on to the end of the trip because it was cheaper to take a flight there instead of directly to Stockholm. I left Växjö on a Thursday afternoon. I took a 5 hour bus ride to Nyköping, Sweden. I took a short bus ride out to the Skavsta airport. This is small airport mainly for Ryan Air flights, only three gates. I met my friends Eric, Dave, and Brittany at the hotel across the street. Dave and Brittany flew out the next morning to Ireland while ... read more

For my first Christmas away from home, Kai and I decided to spend it in Rome. We took at train from Cortona on Christmas Eve and stayed in hotel near the train station. We walked around the first night and saw a few sights after dinner. We turned on the TV back in our room that night and were surprised to see the Christmas Eve service at the Vatican being broadcasted. We had a bottle of wine while watching the Italian commentary. We saw the Vatican with our own eyes the next morning. The front desk clerk at our hotel said the Pope would speak at 9:30, so we arrived at 9 but there weren't large crowds. There were seats set out but no one was in them. We figured he spoke earlier and we missed ... read more

After Venice, Kai and I took a train to Bologna. We ate a delicious lunch - I had pasta with ham and asparagus, one of the best meals of the trip. We were only there for an hour waiting for our next train. We arrived in Parma a few hours later. We were visiting Kai's friend Gabe. Gabe was an exchange student in Kai's high school 4 years ago. He was home with his family in Parma for the holidays. He picked us up at the train station and brought us to his house. He and his family are really nice and gave us a free place to stay. After getting settled, we walked downtown through the outdoor Christmas market. It was really crowded because it was a few days before Christmas. We met up with ... read more

This holiday season, Kai and I traveled to four European countries. We were on vacation for almost three weeks, starting in Venice, Italy and ending in Prague, Czech Republic. We had an amazing time and saw a lot of beautiful places. On December 19th, Kai and I met in Nykoping, Sweden to fly to Venice. It is where the Ryanair airport is based outside of Stockholm. I got up at 5am after 3 hours of sleep (too excited to get to bed early) and took a train and two buses to the airport. When we met at the airport we were talking and an American guy overheard our English. Turns out he is a student from LaCrosse studying in Germany and visiting Sweden for the holidays. What a small world!! We flew to Venice and on ... read more

I know I'm a month late, but I had such a great Thanksgiving this year! I flew up to Lulea to visit Kai for the weekend. I got there on Tuesday evening and there was so much snow! I don't know how much exactly, but check out the pictures. It was a beautiful winter wonderland! On Thursday, we started cooking at 1pm. We started by peeling potatoes and cutting bread into cubes for the stuffing. Kai worked on the coconut cream pie while I started the stuffing. I mixed olives, apples, and onions with the bread and chicken stock for my first attempt at making stuffing. I made three pans and got them in the oven an hour before meal time at 6:30. While I did that, Kai prepared the four little chickens and got them ... read more

Hej hej! Jag heter Emily och jag kommer fran Minnesota! I have been learning a little Swedish lately (it says My name is Emily and I am from Minnesota). Since my last post, I turned 21 and saw some new things. A few days before my birthday, I celebrated Halloween with friends. Halloween is popular in Sweden like it is in the US, but less people go trick or treating. I dressed as a pirate with the hook and eye patch I found at Toys R Us. The next day, me and lots of exchange students took a bus to Stockholm where we boarded the MS Romantika, a giant cruise ship. The ship was beautiful!!! There were three dance floors, two restaurants, a sauna, whirlpool, and much more. We ate dinner at the taco buffet where ... read more

I am sitting in the library of Lulea Tekniska Universitet, where Kai takes engineering classes. The town of Lulea is in Northern Sweden, only a two hour drive from the Arctic Circle. It looks just like Northern Minnesota with an array of coniferous trees, birch, and lakes. I had a week off from classes so I came up here to spend time with Kai. On Sunday, I reserved three trains from Vaxjo to Lulea (totaling 20 hours of travel). On the second train bound for Stockholm, there was some delay and we waited at a stop outside the city for an extra hour. I asked around to figure out what was going on since the speaker on the intercom was addressing the passengers in Swedish. One guy was trying to catch the same train out of ... read more

Greetings from Sweden! Last weekend I met Kai in Amsterdam for three nights and we had a blast! I left Vaxjo at 9:30am Thursday morning, catching the bus to the train station. I caught a train to Copenhagen which took 2 1/2 hours. It was really foggy that morning but luckily the fog lifted by the time I flew out. I got a window seat on a "City-Hopper", its a plane seating 50 people that fly short distances in Europe. The view from the plane was amazing as we left Copenhagen. I saw the long bridge that connects Malmo, Sweden to Copenhagen, Denmark and discovered that it disappears under water for a few kilometers. I also saw two sets of wind turbines in the water. The first is in a row of about ten and the ... read more

Hej! I went to Stockholm for the first time last weekend. My friend from Duluth, Cassy, came to visit me Wednesday night and we left on Thursday afternoon. We took a 4 hour train there and found our hostel without a problem. We got some dinner and went bar hopping. Kai met us a few hours later when he got to town. The next day we went to Skansen, the only outdoor museum with a zoo! It was really fun. We went to dinner and went out bar hopping again around the city. Cassy left for her airport at three in the morning and we saw her off. On Saturday, Kai and I went to Gamla Stan, the oldest part of the city. It was definitely the most beautiful part. We went to a pub called ... read more
