so...we made it to madrid. and its really really cold here. okay...so not really cold, just windy. and last night we got caught in a rain storm...but we really like it here other than that. today everything is shut down because it´s their labor day. tomorrow is shaylea´s birthday and also their dos de mayo festival. they are setting up stages all over town...we are assuming they are for tomorrow, so that should be pretty cool. this morning we ventured out in the cold and made it as far as palacio real, a royal palace, but didn´t go inside because it´s closed today. we then found an internet cafe...and here we are. last night we explored the city a little and discovered the magical powers of tapa bars. you order a beer and they give ... read more

(N) We overnighted in Madrid before our onward connection to Lima tomorrow at 12h30. The hotel was only a few mins walk from Plaza Santa Ana, which sounded great in an article I had read recently. Even though we just dropped the bags at the hotel, it was still midnight before we got to the Plaza. We were amazed at the large amount of people still and drinking at that time! Great nosh of tortilla espanola, potato salad (already indulging my carbo cravings!) and tomatoes, in a typical Spanish tapas bar: big counter, small wooden tables with well-worn marble tops, and paper serviettes strewn all over the floor. Having washed down the above with local lager, we called in at a couple more similar places before heading back.... read more

we arrived by train in san sebastian at about 10:30 last night. the city is beautiful at night. it´s in north east spain right on the ocean. the town is divided by a river and the bridges glow. we didn´t have any trouble finding our hostel, thank goodness. we dumped our stuff off and went out to explore what this place has to offer at night...which is a lot! everyons is so nice and we felt completely safe...but mom, you´ll be happy to know that we were still cautious :) we started out at this really weird bar that was full of what seemed to be 12 year old...it was so bazaar. we left that one and fell into a metal bar...that was an experience. made me - tara - miss josh more than ever. ... read more

Things are really winding down here! Next week is our last week of classes, then exams and home...wow! This weekend was fun, the weather was really crappy though! I didn't do anything special on Friday, then Saturday we went to Sagunto and Peniscola. It was supposed to be a relaxing beach trip, but the weather was not good at all. We first went to Sagunto which was an old Roman town with a cool amphitheater. The Spanish government decided to pour cement over the top of it so that they could use it, so it looks pretty silly and modern now, which is sad, but you can still see the Roman foundation. The town was cute, we walked up the hill to the castle, which contained the old Roman ruins and then also was a massive ... read more

So Salamanca farewelled us with pouring rain and freezing temperatures (about 5 degrees celsius). I (Jane) had a little bit of and interesting lunch at the bus station after deciding to try something different. Well, through the glass window in the bar, it definitely looked like a concoction involving oyster mushrooms and smelt great...I am sure that I had seen it in other bars. On closer inspection once back at the table, Adam said, "Jane, they looking suspiciously like an animal product"...."don't be silly Adam, they are mushrooms". Adam was right though, as he quite often is, and after taking a bite I realised that I was eating a porkers ears. Adam thought this was hilarious and spent the whole bus trip oinking at me. It put me off my food for at least 6 ... read more

It´s taken this long to blog, almost a month into our trip. It´s been full on; this probably the first time we´ve been able to sit at an internet café without madly trying to research or book accommodation. Brendan´s Spanish skills have been put to the test (especially in Southern Spain) and although it´s been a bit frustrating at times (they talk so fast!) it´s been immensely helpful with day to day stuff like booking rooms and tickets. At the moment we are in Jerez. We originally intended to visit Cadiz but the accommodation there was impossible this weekend. So we thought this was a good alternative option. Paul has headed off to Madrid early so we have taken advantage of booking a double room with our own nice clean bathroom, yippee! (Not sure I ... read more

I ventured out early today to beat the crowds to the Guggenheim. The weather here isn’t so great with some light drizzle descending on me as I walk along the right bank (or is it the left bank) of the river. Bilbao (sorry Bilbo) is a lovely little city and small enough to walk around. I arrived at the Guggenheim about half an hour before opening time so I ventured away from the early birds (mainly German Seniors) in search of some desayuno (breakfast) and found an excellent little bar where I had a café con leche and a racion of tortilla, it was the perfect breakfast - just what I needed. And now back to the Museum. The Guggenheim is covered with hundreds of titanium plates which change in tone with the light of ... read more
