By Zoe Have you ever dreamed of waking up in the heart of Madrid? Well if you haven't it will be your next dream after reading this. When I woke up I had a shower. While I was in the shower my dad (Dean) popped up to the shops to get breakfast. After breakfast we went to the market. It has lots of things to choose from. There was seafood, a butcher, a bakery, a cafe a pub and many more. All in one big shop. Then we walked down to the Madrid Hop-On-Hop-Off bus tour. It took us to the art gallery, Reina Sofia. We saw lots of painting, some were very famous and others were not. The famous paintings included lots of Picasso like The Woman Dressed in Blue, Guernica and many more. We ... read more

Mission accomplished, research completed and beautiful building seen without hoards of shoppers - a good morning. The invoice will be going to QVG Capital as we are pretty sure we can't claim the trip as a tax deduction! That comment is to see if Chris is actually reading his parent's blog!!!!!!! We are now waiting to go to the airport listening to the helicopter circling overhead checking out the lie of the land before the Vuelta (correct name for the Tour d'Espagna) finishes around 10.30pm. We had a hilarious trip back with the cab driver who was obviously of the opinion that if he spoke louder these crazy foreigners would understand what he was saying. It must have worked as we realised he was saying he might need to detour (much arm circling) to get back ... read more

Zoe We have arrived in Spain after 24 hours of plane travel. We caught 2 planes, the first plane was 14 hours then we stopped at Dubai for a lovely breakfast in the first class lounge. Our second flight was 10 hours I did not sleep at all. Let's just say that I have grown a lot from the last plane trip. Two years ago when we went to Germany I was able to curl up in a little ball or lie across mum and dads lap to sleep. But now I am to tall to do all that so I had 2 hours of sleep on the plane. When we arrived in Spain and took a cab to our apartment. When we arrived at our apartment we got dressed and went out for some lunch. ... read more

Day 1 Madrid Our apartment is on the third floor of a very old building it has a very crooked staircase and we were told to be quiet when we went in and out of it.We have a balcony looking down at a restaurant and looking forward at another apartment. In Spain I don't think I saw one house, there all cute apartments that look the same .In our apartment there are two bedrooms, one with a double bed that mum and dad sleep on with an ensuite and a tiny study with a window that you hang your laundry on the washing lines and it is a pulley system. The other room has two single beds one with a shelf which was a bit higher than mine for Zoe and because it is so high ... read more

After a 5 hour train ride through pretty dry and uninteresting countryside we have arrived in Madrid, our last stop before heading home. I shouldn't really say "uninteresting" because everywhere you haven't been is interesting in some form but think Hay Plain in January - not much variation. You know when you book a place you are never quite sure of it's location, well we scored well here. We are right in the shopping district a walk from just about everything - very grateful for double glazing!! We had a wander for a few hours yesterday and this morning enjoyed a very leisurely start to the day which was just lovely. We then did the Hop on Hop off bus to the Prado Museum seeing lots of amazing buildings but, honestly, I think we are in ... read more

I loved Madrid. Loved it... Wish we could have spent more time here... I'll back up a bit... We only planned 2 nights in Madrid, and only because we had to make a choice whether to go North or South in our journey. Many of my friends advised to skip Madrid in favour of some of the southern hotspots such as Malaga and Valencia... Because we wanted to hit San Sebastian before Barcelona, Madrid was a perfect destination between Porto and San Sebastian. We decided to fly from Porto to Madrid mainly to save some time. Finding our way from the airport on the metro to our Airbnb was fairly simple and we were settled. We totally nailed our location! It was within steps from Plaza Mayor... the main plaza or square in central Madrid and ... read more

As we had to pack up and check out of OK Hostel Madrid and because we had a 4pm train to San Sebastián which would fill up the rest of our day, there isn't an awful lot to report about today other than our morning visit to Madrid Palace. Having missed our chance to get in for free the night before, but not wanting to miss out, we wandered over to the palace after having found a little cafe for breakfast (we didn't really fancy the hostel brekkie 3 days in a row). We had seen the palace from the outside on a number of occasions already and had been informed by Viviena, our tour guide, that it had approximately 4,200 or so rooms spread over it's 8 floors. It is large but it doesn't look ... read more

Up until 11am our day started pretty much the same as yesterday, wake up thinking it's still the middle of the night, quietly sneak around the room getting showered and dressed, head down to our €3 breakfast (no pancake for me today as some moron burnt the shit out of the machine), pack up a bag for the day and head out. However, rather than repeat the walking tour, this morning we went straight over to Retiro to guide ourselves around the park. Parque de el Retiro is a very large park on the east side of the city, referred to as 'The Lungs of Madrid'. There is plenty to see in he park and we made our way around 8 different statues, monuments or buildings. The most notable of which were: - Monument Alfonso XII, ... read more

We had arrived in Madrid the night before, hopped on to the Metro and checked in to our en-suite 4 bed dorm at OK Hostel Madrid with no issues. There was evidence of us having two room mates but we didn't see them until this morning (although we heard them both come in). The room had a balcony and an exterior shutter that blocked out e 99.9% of the daylight (great for me) so I was a little confused when my alarm went off at 08:30 this morning as I thought it was still the middle of the night (and felt like it too)! We quietly showered and dressed and made our way downstairs to tuck into the bargain €3 breakfast our hostel offered. I thought it was a decent offering for €3, it even included ... read more

The start to any holiday is never mundane and today was no exception; we were running around liked headless chooks. After a less-than-impressive parma at Pakenham Hotel, we reached the airport where the flood of tears hit us all. Going away for two months with a group of people is one thing but nine months completely alone is bloody overwhelming. Walking through those gates was tough but I got over it when I became too preoccupied with hating myself for taking a duffle bag not rolling bag. Me + two heavy bags + tight spaces never ends well. The plane had been delayed - as usual - but only by 40 minutes so not too bad. Luckily the only thing I had to complain about from there on in was that the plane was like a ... read more
