Espérons qu'on pourra avoir l'auto!

Today I spent much of the day at the Prado Museum. It has a world class art collection and a policy of no photography, so I won't be showing you any pictures of the pictures. Seeing great art is an indescribable experience anyway, so I'll mention a few other things that you may find interesting. I like being in Spain and one plus compared to France is the many fewer police and security guards around town. There are still screens to get into some museums, but I haven't seen one automatic weapon since I arrived. In Paris, there were machine gun-toting officers everywhere. One bad thing about Madrid is the frequency of tobacco use in public places. Sitting at an outdoor cafe is a time-limited experience for me because I can only tolerate the smoke for ... read more

My plan for setting my circadian rhythm to Madrid time is working so far. I had dinner around 10:30 and went to bed a little after midnight last night. I slept in, but my hotel serves breakfast until noon, so I was OK there! Today I have been enjoying several of the things that Madrid has to offer on a pleasant spring Sunday. First of all, today was the running of the Madrid Marathon and I happened to be out near the start of it (see photo). I walked to the National Archeological Museum (free on Sundays) and spent more time than I planned looking through the exhibits. It is an excellent museum with appropriate emphasis on the Iberian peninsula. It traces man's habitation from the time of the cave-dwellers to the time of Napoleon. Afterward ... read more

I am now in Madrid, Spain. It is nice to be back. I was here once before in 2005 and I am looking forward to seeing some of the same sights - and maybe a few new ones. My first goal, however, is to try to adjust my biological clock to Spanish time. I remember being hungry much of the time when I was here twelve years ago because I couldn't adjust to eating lunch around 2-3 PM and dinner around 10 PM. Restaurants were always closed when I thought it was time to eat. So this time I will try harder to give in to the Spanish way of doing things. I arrived at the airport this afternoon and ate a late lunch. It is now almost ten o'clock, so it is about time to ... read more

Happy Tuesday I have been so busy with school and getting everything together for Jonny, haven't even had a chance to update here. He arrived Thursday afternoon around one and it was such a beautiful day!!! He was tired immediately. Jet Lag is so real. It always hits at some point, and unfortunately for him it hit when it was absolutely gorgeous outside haha! I had originally wanted to go to Valencia, (south of Catalonia Barcelona) for a festival called "Las Fallas" which is supposed to be really cool and fun, but that didn't work out, things were too expensive, hostels were booked. So, when it was official that he was coming over here I planned the trip to Madrid. Madrid, the capital of Spain, includes some of the most authentic experiences of Spain. The huge ... read more

We braved storm Doris to travel from North Yorkshire to Manchester by rail, then onwards, flying from Manchester to Madrid via Heathrow airport. After a flight cancellation and lots of delays we finally made it to Barajas Airport Madrid at 10pm. With only hand luggage for a long weekend and a rapid passport control we were soon out of the airport. Unfortunately the metro link to Madrid centre was closed for maintenance but there is a courtesy bus from the airport to Mar de Cristal metro station where we took line 4 to our hotel location at Alonso Martinez. Total cost of our transfer from airport to city , only 3 Euros. Pleased with ourselves we emerged onto the city streets but could not see our hotel. Finally we asked two young Spanish girls who were ... read more

The plan was to go south to Tarragona. We had visited the city before and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, so Wendy the Navigator took on the task of finding a suitable campsite and she did this to the best of her ability. On leaving Blanes she entered the co-ordinates into the satnav and I was expecting a journey of nearly three hours. We were all astounded when the estimated journey time was a mere 20 minutes and on investigation it was discovered that Wendy had found a campsite on Tarragona Avenue in the next town 15km away. It was agreed that this was not ideal and a dramatic change of plan was required. Changing the plan dramatically brought forth very improved results. We ended up driving inland to the foothills of The Pyrenees and a small village ... read more

Today we had to traverse Madrid again using its network of ring roads. M25/M1 and M6 all rolled into one. To make it worse it was rush hour and the morning traffic was awful. Nose to nose all along the route. The Spanish are impatient drivers weaving in and out of the traffic at impossible angles and doing excessive speed. The route is stop . start as other roads join us or our road leaves the motorway. It feels as if we are getting nowhere fast. We even see our first car accidents. We had commented that we had seen none this trip and then true to form once one came along another followed pretty closely. Both the same. A driver travelling too fast . Perhaps using a mobile phone or not concentrating. The car in ... read more

After our pleasant night we to our overnight stop which was going to be Desperadoes. Camping Los Desperrannos had been brilliant last week. Good plots, pleasant company but a touch expensive as ACSI rate had not kicked in. Today well it had changed and instead of over 25 euros a night we were down to a more pleasant 17. But what a difference a week makes. I want to continue singing 24 little hours but it does not quite fit. As we drove through the gate the site looked as empty as last week. It is back end of the short summer season here in Spain. The man on reception recognised me "You come back " he said . I smiled and said yes handing him our passports. He smiled at me " Your passports " ... read more

Mad mad mad Madrid never quite expected it to be like this. I expected bustle, life rush and people but never expected to be ripped off. Work up late after the noise of the night before. It did however go quiet later as the weekenders packed up and left for home. Tents were taken down and a strange quietness descended on Camping International. In fact, it is fair to say it was lovely with a good supermercado that sold fresh milk , ice lollies and lovely hot croissants. Excellent sanitaires , a good bar and restaurant but note to myself never ever come on a Friday nor a Saturday . It is hell. We had decided not to bother with Madrid but as we had time to spare we made the decision that the train station ... read more
