Ah oui! Ai-je besoin de vous ... read more

We have arrived in Tarragona. We had a very nice stay in Girona. Nice Hotel with a view on the plaza. We saw what there was to see in this wonderful place. We went to Perthus on the border to see if things were indeed cheaper but we found that it is not that cheap anymore as before. Not that busy either. The alcohol is cheaper as in the shops but the perfums just a very little bit. It was a nice daytrip and we had time. We did some shopping. Our car the Peugeot is just out and it has a lot of looks. Must say it is a beautiful car to drive completely automatic if you want it to be. We had a good run to Tarragona and made sure we fuelled on the ... read more

We have arrived in Spain. After an overnight stay in Auch in a hotel high up the hill without elevators. Had to carry, lucky enough only the overnight bags,up three flights of stairs. to reach the room. Very happy it was air-conditioned for even at 5 p.m. the temperature was 35 degrees. We had a rest for a while before we went to look for a meal. The hotel had no facilities. There was a Carrefour shopping centre with a banquet restaurant That was good enough. Had a good meal there and was close to the Hotel. Had an early night for a hard day coming up. Crossing the Pyreneans promised to be a lot of small roads. It was close to 400 kilometers that could take the best part of the day. I was not ... read more

I am writing this as a cumulative experience of the past two day where we had the opportunity to visit the Picasso museum, the Museum of the City, and a History Museum in Tarragona. Overconfidence I have had a complete turn-around from the the beginning of the week when I was very hesitant about interacting with different people in that I have experienced overconfidence. I was starting to overlook the differences in the cultures and found myself in some awkward situations. There was a man who came up to me and another student and handed us bracelets. I thought this just might be a kind gesture, which was my overconfidence speaking. He then asked us for “donations” to some organization and we politely handed the bracelet back and said no thank you. This reminded me that ... read more

Can I Speak Spanish? As someone who speaks a little spanish, one of the hardest parts of today was deciding whether to try to decide whether to attempt to speak spanish to the vendors, to ask if they speak English, or to just start speaking English to them. I found that the answer depended on the individual situation. If the person started by saying “Hello” then I felt more comfortable simply speaking to them in English. However, this did not happen with the majority of people. I felt that the best approach was to think about what I needed to say to determine if I could get my point across in Spanish without embarrassing myself. One of my fears going into today was that I would try to communicate in Spanish and then just ... read more

Waking up to rural smells and sounds, and a gorgeous day, we were definitely in a village. Fuentespalda has a history we got the lowdown on upon chancing on an older resident, possibly the village crier, that afternoon. Virtually throwing herself verbally on us, the long history of the Ermita atop the hill, the legend written of the trumpet protecting the village, and the decision to never speak a certain dialect, was explained. The alternate name is Fontdespatla, and local signage is duo-lingo. La Picosa, a peak at over 1000m, took us a good few hours to climb beforehand. It was exactly the muscle-work change our thighs needed, rewarding us with a birds eye view of the nearby turquoise embalse, and dramatic craggy mountains to the east. A cool 6C morning and warm 18C afternoon fit ... read more

Barcelona 9th April Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia and Spains second largest city. Everywhere you’ll see the ornately works of Antonio Gaudi, 20th century Modernism emblematic constructions declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. I make no apology for this Travel Blog turning into a food blog but you cannot come to a city that prides itself on its cuisines, with many different styles including Catalan. So starting out from the statue of Christopher Columbus at the bottom of La Rambla we headed up to the Plaza Catalunya. We were meeting friends for lunch, including 8 other fellow travellers who are travelling with us QM2. But first some sites, including the famous market of La Rambla, Mercat de la Boqueria where all the locals shop in particular for fresh produce including fresh fish, Jamon, meats and all ... read more

Sunday 7th April. We arrived in Barcelona on Sunday in the early afternoon. We were quickly through the airport formalities and on board our coach. On the way to the hotel, the coach took us on a quick tour of the western side of Barcelona, helping us get some idea of the city's layout, and briefly seeing some highlights from the coach windows, such as the Olympic stadium, the magnificent Museum of Art, and the waterfront. After checking in, we were quickly off on the metro to visit the extraordinary Sagrada Familia. Beyond description, it has to be seen to be believed. Having taken many decades so far, they are now really putting efforts in to finish it by 2026. The funds raised from the enormous number of tourists is now funding the work. I will ... read more

As you know I love to visit cities across the world from the stunning artistic paradise of Barcelona to the beauty of Pisa and far-flung destinations such as the vibrant Kuta in Bali. I love the juxtaposition on wonderful scenery and often gorgeous beaches such as the expansive beach in Barcelona and a huge open golden sand space of Kuta beach alongside a buzzing city to explore and get right into the real people and with tons of exciting places to visit, and in my case party in! Now I have been travelling with my girlfriend for a while now (we got together 9 months ago and she has been stuck to me ever since... ;) ) and we like to dress to impress when we hit each city. We like to make sure that we ... read more

The cycling mojo and general respiratory health had started to reappear for P2. Pumped with all the health giving nutrition we found from the Mercadona fruit and vegetable section, we’d decided to do a day trip to Ullastret; that required at least 60km return, and getting up early, of note to P2, on a Sunday morning But, it’s so easy to get out when it barely rains here, and the sun is up (although for any local Spanish / Catalán clocks, they tend to a general delay). So, the streets are wonderfully quiet! Ullastret via the C66 on a Sunday morning, by passing Go and with no stops allowed, we put the hammer down to be there by opening time, 10am. Yet any traveling without photos was impossible, as a distinct view over Sant Joan de ... read more
